BloodFather's Axis of Chaos

My collection of paints is truly out of control. It is a sickness with me, I almost buy them just to collect. I wanted their metallics thougj, because as an NMM guy I didn't have many. But that led me to buy a ton of different sets. Still want their two fantasy flesh sets, Unnatural flesh and the other one. I so far really like the consistency. Very thick with pigments despite being airbrush ready. Makes them take to GW's glaze medium very well.

I have intimated in other threads how I am in te city of. New Orleans, Louisiana. It is such a lovely town of culture, eccentricity, art, soul reaching music, and awe-inspiring architecture. Of course, this immediately brings me back to my pallet and my base work. I know that for others out there like me, you never truly leave your hobby cave. You are always thinking of ideas for this project or the next. I'd like to share some pics with you of things that I have found inspiring. My photos have been exhaustive but here are a few. First, a beautiful oil painting. They are marching off to war, and their banners say such things as death and pollution. Then their are actual musical notes on another banner. This struck me as an idea on a future project, to freehand the notes to a song onto a banner...

So also what struck me was the weathering on some buildings and statues. Cool stuff there. Not sure what the mounted statue was composed of, but it sure has a heavy dose of verdigris now. Notice also how rust streaks appear from potentially non-metallic sources.

In this city, everything is an elaborate detail. Notice how even the gutters are a piece of art. And in the next photo, this is an extreme example of how nature has merged with the urban to create a unique landscape. In this case, literally:

No no detail is forgotten or expense too great for this public civic building:

This sculpture, valued at tens of thousands and in the 1:4 scale, reaffirms to me that what we do is more art than hobby:

This is piece of art was called, to my memory, "Shades of Gold." Indeed, all of these colors can be represented in your NMM or TMM gold.

Perhaps ps the most iconic part of New Orleans architecture are the elaborate balconies with their cast iron gating. While you European artists may see stuff to match this beauty all of the time, in America such history and elegance present in a building is a rarity. When I took this pic, a lone saxophonist belting out a sad tune as it echoed hauntingly through the near empty block.

Finally, another oil painting by the same artist as the initial pic I showed. His work is lovely to me, and concentrates a lot on flesh and manipulating the human form. I have resolved in 2015 to pick up oil painting on canvas, and I am taking a class January 17. If anything, it will enrich my miniature painting skills...

Nice! Thanks for some great reference photos.

Yeah, CMON has had issues for the last month or two. The double posting of photos and error in rankings are two of the recent issues. I keep waiting for a fix but nothing yet. To get rid of the double posts you can host the photos elsewhere and then insert them the same way as usual, but select the from URL tab instead of from computer. Just make sure to uncheck the copy images box or you'll get the double posts again. It's a pain but it's the only solution I've come up with.

Weathering .....Ahh hahaha dirty dirty dirty not just the name of a disgusting olive juice and vodka but even demihuman has been catching the weathering g but look how nice the stretcher came out with Lil hints of realism of dirt blood bloody dirt and some dirty blood if it was up to me Ide make a weathering paint set that would come with earth colors rhino hide works on everything lol and some pigment powers among them mossy green for trees stubs and stone some light and dark rust and some blue for patinas and brass aging all m I g s weathering pigments.and of course a small corner of a sponge from a blister pack packaging..viola one weathering box set and everything you'll need to dirty the dirtiest of vagrants...in the end it's just what we would see look at yourselves at the end of the day after paintjng there's all sorts of dirt and stains now think of our miniature counterparts..their lives are spent butchering things....anybody know a clean butcher...I didn't think so...but in the end it's up to you are we painting to ever I crease our skills by addition of other skills and sometimes where hesitant all that eats is you have to push yourself a tiny bit harder to just say Ahh screw it and use go for it and in the trust that your not nubile you all know a fair amount of technical genius .in the end it will look more realistic.nothing more /nothing less...RRoll the dice m8ty you'll be surprised ..demihuman thanks for the recognition of my hard work to stamp something on everyone of my models to give it that "hey that looks like a papa bam"

Wish I could of been there bud. I am head deep in moving now though so my wife would have killed me before I made it to the car.

Not too much left to do on my current project BaM, but I am actually going to have to work on it (Cannibal) while at the same time working on Gokan. The paint-a-long will be over if I don't get in on it soon. After that: Kingdom Death's Flower Knight. So the painting queue is pretty much filled up until Crystal Brush. It's going to be a challenge to complete all that I can, especially considering how much time base work has historically eaten up for me.

You spoke abiit the use of Rhinox hide in your weathering. This is where I think you could really benefit from using the oil paints. Raw umber IS Rhinox hide, but it's qualties when thinned out make it perfect for weathering. There are articles all over the Internet for using oils as a weathering property. Actually, you can add you pigment powders directly to it for a grainier weathering technique. Finally, one last thing I think you could really benefit from by using oils: we know that color is rarely as basic and clean as what we apply to our minis. For example, take a steel shoulder pad. We apply a gradation of black and steel (gray) to white. Maybe not with so much contrast, but you understand. Well, irl there are a ton of other colors present on it or any they material. Some artists then will take 3 oil colors, thin them out quite a bit, and apply to the surface of the material. They then "massage" the oils onto the material using a blister sponge or even an old stippling brush until the oil colors are almost entirely dissipated. The colors won't really be noticeable as distinct tones, yet it will leave a realistic finish to the model.

I I challenge you to try these out sometime BaM. I plan to. The glorious thing about oils is that they take forever to dry, so if it doesn't look good on the mini, just wipe it off! Simple enough, right? Oh, and I believe MIG makes water soluable oils just for these purposes. The water soluable part makes them easier to clean up. But personally I am buying the finest pigments-Old Holland or Michael Harding. Thanks though BaM and Diggy for showing interest in my lack of painting-I'll be home on Sunday!

Some of yall might remember this guy. Cannibal! I just put together a base for him. Took me all day. The cauldron with the body parts in it was sculpted by my wife, so I have to give her credit. But I absolutely love making bases, and this one has been no exception. I've had to put this project aside recently to work on Gokan, but a rainy day today obliged me to work on this onr's base instead of painting Gokan. Still need to finish his gold bits, paint his robe And THEN finish the base. Hope you like it....

You have done it again BFK, I was not the biggest fan of the model but dam if you can't make a believer out of me. You paint work always fantastic but that base just brings a whole new plot to the story. Love everything about it and tell your wife I need to up my sculpting game because she is good. Bangarang brother.
