Had a mixed week so far hobby wise. No paint (damned mojo vanishing) but did get around to ordering some hobby bits and bobs I've been intending to pick up for a while.
A new set of files as my other two sets (one set from the starter kit from the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine!) are a bit clogged up so I figured a couple of quid on a new set wouldn't break the bank. Also, kids glue spreaders for attempting to get even coats of glue on bases and some disposable fire. As a non smoker, I have never really needed to have a lighter so I finally got around to ordering a bunch (a pack of 10 cost me the same price as a pack of 10 glue spreaders - roughly £2, or 20p a lighter) but decided to finally act on a piece of hobby advice I got years ago in regard to revel contacta plastic glue.
The best bit about this plastic glue is the accurate applicator nozzle, but for a couple of years mine has been jammed full of dried glue, so I've been using it without the nozzle - basically giving the same result as a pot of GW glue.
The reason for the fire is that if you hold the nozzle (separated from the bottle) with some tweezers or similar holding tool and waft a flame around it, the metal is so thin that it quickly heats up and burns the glue out (which isn't particularly pleasant to smell I might add) in seconds. It also leaves the metal with cool burn effects you can use as a guide to emmulate on flamer/melta weaponry
I'll be honest, I have no idea why I haven't done this sooner, but now I have, it's damned useful. There is also a mini scale garbage bag tutorial that uses fire in the process of making the tiny bin bags, so I might try that out as well.
To celebrate having fully functioning glue, I built some Deathwatch.
Here's the downside of my hobby week. On tuesday I got most of the new BMG and Marvel releases from Asylum Wargaming (delayed due to KM's slow dispatch to them. The final two in the order should be with me tomorrow) and was excited to finally get my hands on Starfire.
Here's what she looks like painted up, in the cool studio paint job.
See how smooth she is? Here's what mine looks like. I did get her built, as I was so excited about getting her I initially ignored the problems.
As you can see, she's covered in bubbled up texture all over. Everwhere that should be smooth, there is texture which completely ruins the miniature. I emailed Knight's customer services yesterday evening, not had a response yet though.
To end on a positive though, I also got Mr Hammer in the order, completing my Joker orders from a while back and built him up as well.
