Brambleten Attempts to Paint

@Digganob - Thanks. It'll get tackled as hard and often as time allows me to!

@Auberon - I found it quite therapeutic to put most things in one place, but a lot of people could do the same and be greeted with depression and terror, so it's not for everyone :) I thought I was doing quite well at 10%, but then I added most of my Games Workshop stuff...

I did a little work last night while watching Ex Machina (good film, but I think in terms of AI films The Machine is probably a little better), namely gluing Pete's wing on (again) and laying down some basic browns on The Artist.

The t-shirt on The Artist is probably going to be the dark side of Coal Black, but I'm not entirely sure what colour to paint his trousers. If my plan in my head is right, he'll also have a white skin tone with a dark beard.

@Zab - That must be where I'm going wrong then - I wear colourful patterned lounging trousers while painting so you can't tell if any paint gets splashed on them :) Might give the jeans a go, I think I remember seeing Scott Hockley do them not long back so that gives me an excuse to go trawl through his blog again.

Had an evening of steady, if rather slow, progress on Pete (and a little on The Artist seeing as I had the colours down on the palette)

Only drybrushing on the feathers so far, but I need to get some decent highlights on there given how they curve and to reflect the fact that the fronts are facing upwards while the backs are facing down.

Also had a box from Element Games arrive today, with some Guild Ball stuff (yay more colourful shiny dice!) and some probably unnecessary Guard reinforcements. In fact, they're so unnecessary, I've got another few boxes of stuff arriving from Triple Helix some time soon as well...

Oh, and because I don't use enough green in my colour schemes, I picked up the Scale 75 green set to add to my Flesh, Silver, Gold, Inktensity and Shades of Doom sets.

Cheers Zab :)

Spent this afternoon painting some flesh tones. They're not 100%, but I think they'll wait until I get closer to the end in case I mess anything else up and have to paint over stuff. Not long left now - deadline is the 16th...

He also seems to be at the stage where everything looks crap and unfinished, mostly because everything is indeed, unfinished.

Need to tone those eyebrows down a little...

@Digganob - Thanks! I've not played any of the Bioshock games, never quite managed to find the time.

@Dr. Bob - Cheers. I've not tried a white suit before so thought it was worth a shot. And I very rarely come across a model wearing sandals, they almost all seem to wear boots of some sort.

I got Pete to a stage yesterday that I decided to call finished. I could spend hours more on the metal and the suit and not be any happier with them than I already am, so after a couple of days off, it'll be time to restart on The Artist.

Today I received The Forest Guardian and Broadfoot from the Wamp store (along with some thinner) which means that as of now, my Ax Faction set is 100% complete!

I say 100% complete, what I actually mean is I've bought 100% of it, but only taken 5% out of the box...

That was great company :( I have the kraken hunter and The Hare rider. They are super petite, like Raging heroes small. Good luck squinting through those!

Aye, they're 28mm scale, so they fit in nicely with Hasslefree and Heresy. Being resin the ladies are all rather delicate. There are still a few floating around the internet, but they're being mopped up at a decent rate.

I was planning on doing some painting before doing another update, but it was announced today that my St Peter beat off the competition with his spiky stick to take first prize!

This makes it two wins out of two in the Purgatory contests which I'm over the moon about. The prize for winning this time is a copy of Keysha, who is currently at the casters.

I should have been super busy painting The Artist this week, given that photos are due by 6pm on the 31st but I was a little angry on Monday (in response to something that proves there is still far too much of a way to go to educate people about mental health) and I've learnt not to paint when emotional as I just won't be happy with the outcome, no matter how good it actually is. Tuesday I lost the will to paint, so forced myself to start his base.

I started out with a grand scheme of how it would be smashed up marble. Then I was told (and realised) how much work marble was, and how little time I had left. Plus I cocked up a wash.

So now, tonight, I'm most of my way towards having a cracked Sandstone base :)

Apologies for the crap phone photo which washes out some of the depth.

but not THAT Dr. Bob
Crazy cool! So many techniques in such a short video!

Nothing wrong with cracked sandstone though. :D

@Zab - Cheers. I ended up going Sandstone for this piece but I'll certainly give it a go on another base, probably without a second tier on it.

@Dr Bob - Thanks :)

Second Mini of the Year!

The Artist, from Wamp.

Since his head is naturally shaded by the hat I tried to do some actual shading on his face but unfortunately when taking a picture at an angle at which the shading can be seen, it vanishes under the lighting.

So, with The Artist done I've decided to ditch my next piece, which was Talia and go straight into my randomiser to give me a break from comp stuff.

Here's where it led me...

Starting off with The Artist's location in Wamp, in "Other".

With 14 things on the list, I got 8, which brings me down to Warhammer 40k.

A 3 gets Me Imperial Guard.

Then out of 19 lines, I get line No 1 - The Lord Commissar.

The current status of said Lord Commissar?

Yep, fresh plastic, from the recent Start Collecting boxes. Also, more black clothing, which I haven't done for a while.

Just a little updated this evening.

I finally decided to get my fresh clippers out of the packaging. I've been using the pair on the left since GW released them however long ago, and picked up a replacement pair when I heard they were being discontinued. Since then I haven't gotten around to getting the fresh pair out. I'd forgotten how springy they were! The old pair will still be kept for detabbing metal models mainly.

The Commissar is built (mostly). I don't usually go for the sub assembly, but the arm join is really tight so no gap filling would be needed, and the pipes that come down the back obscure a few details so I decided I'd give it a shot like this.

And on his base.

No painting this weekend, as I was in York for Vapnartak, which is the York Wargames Society annual show (similar to how Salute is the South London Warlords show). It was my first show and I really enjoyed it. Had a great talk with Team Warploque (they really like Kickstarter backers and people who buy dragons apparently).

Amazingly, I didn't spend that much. Possibly because most of the traders were selling historical stuff which I'm not in to.

I did however, pick up a Cocklegriff from Warploque and Corsair, the new Fishermen Captain for Guild Ball.

One brand I could have easily bought more of, if I'd had the space and time to really have a good look at them, is Darksword Miniatures. I settled on three in the end, all from the George R R Martin Masterworks line - Cersei, Daenerys and Jon Snow.

If you fancy looking through all the pictures I took at the event, they're all hosted in this post on Noobs and their Paintbrush. There is quite a few!

After a week away from the brushes, I finally got my Commissar primed and have now begun the task of painting him up. Without using black.

It may look black, but that's actually just Necro Grey from S75's Fantasy line. It's almost black, but has the cool tint of a grey as opposed to a neutral or warm black.

I decided to run a test on the sword arm to see where I would take the highlights to and after a couple of hours work during the rugby, here's where it led me.

The white is just glare off the daylight lamp, but the other tones are right.

I get the feeling that it might take a while to get that effect across the entire mini. And this is supposed to be a gaming piece...
