Comics! What you\'re reading/reccomend...

Hey, there\'s been a few comic book comments pop up and I wanted to put this out. What do you read, what do you reccomend?

I\'m a hard core Marvel fan. Really dislike DC, I just think the power curve is too high and rarely am I interested in the goofy continuity or wierd as hell things they try to do with their characters. Iron Man is an alcoholic, Green Lantern loses to the colro yellow. I\'ll go for Iron Man every time....

Anyway, here\'s some stuff I really enjoy(ed).

-Thor! Always had a soft spot for this guy but his writing was about as complex as my metalic painting process. From the point of \"Avengers Dissasmbled: Thor\" which was great there was a about a three year break were Thor was sleeping. He\'s back and the writer is the Bab 5 guy Stracynski. Or however you spell that name. It\'s great, though I am waiting for him to actually start DOING stuff... but fore hero stuff much better than the average.

-Cap A. He\'s my favorite character (even though I am a Canadian) and from the newest re-boot to now the Ed Brubaker team has done a great job of putting the legend to rest and bringing in a new Cap A, in a believable and non insulting way. I\'m enjoying this so far.

-The Incredible Hercules. Yeah that\'s right, I said it. The poor man\'s Thor has always sucked nuts. Nobody has ever cared about writing for this guy but something happened during \"World War Hulk\" that got the ball rolling on this one. Hercules has taken over the Incredible hulk for a little bit and it\'s got a great blend of humor and intelligent Hero writing. I\'d pick it up.

-Planet Hulk. This was super cool, and paved the way for World War Hulk (Which was a little crappy, especially at the end). If you\'ve always wondered \"Why don\'t that justy blast that guy into space\" then this is the TPB for YOU!

-Civil War Trades. I thought this was an interesting premise but still didn\'t buy it. I only mention this as if you\'ve been away from comics for a while and want to get back in you will not make it anywhere continuity wise until you read up on this arc. EVERY hero was involved and probably changed fromthis arc.

-Rising Stars and Supreme Power. Not REALLY Marvel titles (especially Rising Stars as it\'s published by Top Cow) but these are great, great reads written by Stazynski. He\'s good at this!

-If you\'re a punisher fan then you need to pick up the Max Punisher books.

Stuff to miss.... Spider man sucks wang right now. \"One more day\" is the single most insulting thing Marvel has done to readers that I can think of in recent memory. It\'s that bad.

I\'m am Mutant Hater. I\'ve never, ever been able to get into the whole \"we\'re different\" angst thingy. I\'m supposed to buy the fact that Colussus, the buff Russian who can turn into metal and lift a couple buses has a hard time getting into the hottest clubs because of his race? Do the cops always pull over and harrass Jean Grey, asking her \"what she\'s doing to drive such a nice car\" or any of that? Angel, the rich as hell white kid with wings? You\'re different, you have WINGS dummy! People make fun of you, fly away! Ack. They\'re bad as ever.

There\'s lots of good stuff out there. Moon Knight is even good now.

So, any thoughts?

Well Marvel mutants ARE an allegory... There\'s not a lot of mainstream market for \"the comic about a gay kid whose parents and friends disown him, so he runs away but meets some new friends who don\'t hate him for who he is\". And there was certainly NO market for it back when X-Men was first published. But certainly I don\'t care for what the X books became in the last few decades... an impossibly tangled and nonsensical stew of badly written bullshit, sometimes illustrated by Rob Liefield just to make it worse :O

Anyway, my comics reading tends towards the eclectic these days. Not that I\'ve subscribed to \"Hothead Paisan\" yet but I think the closest thing to a superhero book I\'ve read lately was Hellboy.

So, Hellboy: A self-effacing, grumpy hero who often barely figures out what\'s going on in time to save the world (again). Occult Nazis and ancient Lovecraftian horrors. Awesome art style. And lots of stories, available in convenient trade paperbacks.

Pride of Baghdad: A graphic novel about a pride of lions from Saddam\'s zoo, who escape during the American invasion of Baghdad. Yeah it\'s got talking animals in it, but they feel like actual animals, not just stand-ins for people. Except of course they are standing in for people: all the innocents who get caught up in wars that they can barely understand let alone protect themselves from.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: OK, it\'s actually pretty cheesy, but for a fan, it\'s quite gratifying to have new stories to follow. I can\'t say I agree with all the character development that\'s happened (Buffy is seduced by another Slayer? Pure \"fan service\" :(), but overall it\'s well-done.

I\'ll check out the Lone Range and Pride of Baghdad.

Anyone who hasn\'t, I STRONGLY reccomend Rising Stars. It\'s really good. I fired off the set to SuperVike so hopefully he learns to read and can back me up.

he\'s an undercover judge in mega city one. simps are people who dress stupidly, he dresses as a clown but is actually really cool and gritty. it\'s a strip in 2000ad. as of yet, they haven\'t printed a book of the stories afaik.

i\'d recommend 2000ad, it\'s got a good dose of british humour in it. i\'m not a fan of a couple of the strips but most of them are pretty good. some good writers there (dan abnett, si spurrier..) and some superb artistss, with quite a range of styles (clint langley, richard elson, colin macneil, simon davies, carl critchlow..)

I only read 1 comic. If I didn\'t, I dont think I\'d read any.

Invincible, by Robert Kirkman.

Freaking love it, and always waiting for the next issue impatiently :)

(I do also read his Walking Dead series in Trader Paperback format, but Invincible I buy as comics).

Loved Invincible until about the 4th trade, the wierd thingy they were cooking up with the Dad and his homeplanet and their plans didn\'t do it for me. Should I have kept going? I may go back to it.

Walking dead was great! I sort of let it slide as nothing seemed to be happening. I do loves me a good zombie scenario. I\'ll go pick up the newst trades for those!

Hellboy! You bet! Any fan of hellboy might like the way more tounge in cheek \"Goon\" stuff.

I\'m with Dragonsreach - Batman ... easily my favorite hero. I have been following all the ongoing titles for some years now. Some of the one-shots and graphic novels are awesome too ... Arkham Asylum comes to my mind immediately, but there are many many more.

I am also a big fan of the Spectre. The Mandrake/Ostrander run was fantastic.

My favorite mini-series is Kingdom Come - a must-read in my opinion.

I tried to like Marvel comics, but they are not my cup of tea. In general I prefer the DC Universe and characters.

I don\'t really do comics much. The only ones I have ever bought are Thrud the Barbarian.

Crtichlow seems to be busy with other stuff at the moment (2000ad maybe) so there hasn\'t been one out for ages :(

I don\'t really mind Marvels nowadays, though Marvel Max line has some intresting articles like Punisher. Some people don\'t like this much more violent version of Punisher. But hey, he\'s nutcase and killer so what did you expect :D.

Hellboy, Batman, Slaine and Conan are my favourites at the moment. I really like Simon Bisleys art and the way he paintes those Slaine, The Horned God stories is just awesome. I would also recommend Clint Langley/Pat Mills Slaine, Book of invasion trilogy.

I usually don\'t like manga that much but Lone Wolf and Cub is just one of the best stories and best manga I know. Well that may not be much, but it is really great story. And it doesn\'t even look like average manga with big eyes and all.

One comic I really waited was Paolo Parente\'s Dust. Well it looks great but unfortunately the story isn\'t that good. It could have been interesting but the dialogue sucks and the story isn\'t that imaginative.

Only proper comic book I\'ve read is Alan Moores Watchmen. I was expecting a traditional superhero story but I was happy to be wrong. I ended up reading the whole series during one day at work. At the end I almost cried, hyperventilated and pissed on my pants at the same time, but when I failed to do any of those I went to nearby comic cafe and raised a pint for Alan Moore.

Daniel Clowes writes a good comic.
I would heartily recommend Jimmy Corrigan, The smartest kid on Earth. It will break your heart. Also love American Splendour. More of a Manga boy really. Check out Death Note, Battle Royale and Love Hina.

I used to be much bigger into comics, but have since pared down to the occassionaly graphic novel.

I heartily recommend the GOON to folks. It\'s a mix of strange humor, pulpy crime drama, and lovecraftian bizarreness, all in a envelope of fantastic art.

I pick up the occassional Hellboy as well.

I had been following THE WALKING DEAD, as it fulfills my current zombie fetish...but I\'m at the 6th or so compliation, and the stories are soooo freaking depressing.

Mr Radom has turned me onto the Rising Stars, but it\'s still too early to have me form a solid opinion on it. I\'ve too much more to read (which I can just barely do).

PS 238, super powered kids (except for one), in Elementary School
Nodwick. Not being written at this time, may be back at a later date. But the stories are in a compilation (or several)
PVP. Hey! a talking cat, bent on world domination! A blue Troll, and a group of geeks that write a gaming magazine. Also an online comic.
