I see you made it to Kublacon this past weekend and got 3rd overall. Congrats! How was the competition? What did you think of the other winners?

Yep! My Bannerman piece got 3rd overall which was pretty cool. The other two pieces were very nice. The pictures don't seem to do them justice. Especially the Space Marine, he looked WAY better in person. here is a link to teh photos:

One thing that was tough, was that the minis were displayed in this tiny glass case so it was pretty hard to get a really good look at them.

It was my first live contest, which was very cool. My Orc Warboss got a silver in Diorama. My HellBrute got a bronze for vehicle and I entered two of the quick paint D&D minis and they both got bronze for single fantasy. Interestingly enough, no one got higher than silver. So even the best in show was silver, which makes me think I am really close to being able to nab a best in show, and a flight to Crystal Brush next year. Unless of course this David Powell guy comes back to the Bay Area Open with one of his mind blowing pieces. ;)

It was also my first game convention and it was about as expected. I only went for the last day so the mood could have been a little sedate (hungover) I got in a on a D&D game with my buddy and his daughter and a couple of other kids that was pretty darn fun even if the second half felt a little rushed. Playing with preteens was actually really fun. Made for some great role playing situations and our DM did not miss a beat.

I also got some great input on my painting, a lot of which echoed comments I have gotten from here already.

Yeah the pics seem to let them down a bit, but what can you do?

I agree with the judges that there wasn't any gold level work there. A similarly painted banner from you on another one of your minis would surely have been gold quality. Not saying that you didn't do great on this mini, but I think there was only so much you could do with the sculpt. Mini selection can be very important, and I think this comp was just dying to have a well painted bust win it all. Not saying the winner wasn't good, but it surely wasn't incredible. You got this one next year Ben!

Sounds like you had a fun time. My impression is the gaming tournament there is a lot bigger than the painting competition. The Bay Area Open will be even smaller, if last year is any indication. But, the guys behind the Draconic Awards seem to be putting in a lot of work, getting sponsors, making events Crystal Brush Qualifiers, so hopefully their painting shows will grow and attract more entries. Still, in terms of live competitions, they aren't going to be anywhere near what you see at Crystal Brush, MFCA in Philly, or any of the numerous European shows. They are still fun to attend and worth checking out, but if you can make it to one of the bigger shows you will definitely notice the difference.

Congrats again on placing with all those pieces. I hope to make it to the Bay Area Open, so I look forward to seeing you there!

Thanks guys. Yeah the gaming aspect was about 90% of the event. Still I was very proud of our little painting community up there. There are a few guys that are very serious about their painting and it was great to see them and their projects. There were about 3 times as many Journeyman level entries than Masters but I think a lot of the journeyman stuff looked really nice although I couldn't get close enough to it to give it real scrutiny.

This guy was in particular, a real show stopper: http://www.draconicawards.com/pastevents/?p=viewentry&eid=1004&etID=225 I know a lot of more serious painter types probably don't like the sculpt, but it looked fantastic in the case even though it was towards the bottom. He didn't shade his metallics at all, but they were super neat and smooth. I talked to a few boys by the display case that were probably 12 years old and I asked them what they thought was the best and they all immediately pointed to it. I tried to steer them to some of the more artistic entries and they were not interested. Khorne to the Bone! :)

Later by the display case I had I think, my favorite experience of the whole event when a couple of older painter type guys were gushing over my piece, I eavesdropped for as long as I could stand it then told them I was the painter and they were very impressed. I wanted to give them hugs, but stuck to hand shakes. So yeah I did have a really good time.

Sounds like good times indeed! I looked at the pictures on Facebook, and that dragon thing struck me as well. I think the sculpt is cool, despite my dislike for spikes. He has made it really shine there, journeyman or not.

I'm baaaack.

Thanks all, have had a couple of busy weeks on the home front and was a little discouraged that the Ashknight banner didn't even place (!) so haven't gotten any painting done for a bit, but here I am now.

I wish I had some mind-blowing new project to share, but I am just slogging on trying to get my lizardmen finished. I have gotten the NMM weapons where I want them and am assembling a movement-tray/base/diorama thing for them, hopefully in time for a little local con' where I hope to see Mr. Bailey and wring some more mini painitng mana from him.

Here is my little dio. I plan to add some vegetation and banners and some water effects and all that. Need to figure out an easter egg for behind the wall. Maybe a thief or a "No Trespassing" sign?

And here are the waepons. The mace ball thing is finally turning out nicely and the hammer deal got repainted for the fourth time. I am going to go with this one or Mr. Crocodude is going to have to fight with a pointed stick.

Got so frustrated doing the blends that I finally just broke the glue and airbrushed it. Need to still do the cylindrical part where it meets the shaft.

Okay, more updates to follow!

Looking good! Those dino-crocs or whatever they are are really sweet. I like the base you're creating for them. Some sort of easter egg behind the wall would be cool. If only there were a decent thief mini out there that you could use.
