Yeah, I'm afraid that rank and file is were the money is at. However, I see people selling higher-level work, so I assume there is a market. Like Diggs, I'd certainly want a genuine Demihuman (TM) and could pay premium for that, simply to just 'have one' and to support your business. I'll drop you a message when I have money to spare. :)

I would add another level of client, which can really be your target... Those people that just want to play with a good looking painted army and don't have the time or patience to paint it by themselves but at the same time want some quality work and have the money and understanding of the hobby to know what they are looking for (usually there aren't teenagers here, just people around their 25-35's that have the money to pay for what they want). I would look into wargaming clubs and put some little ads in your arts/hobby shop when you have your FB and blog developed a bit more. Hope this helps you a little ;)

Thanks Maenas, This is pretty much what I am counting on. I live 30 minutes from Silicon Valley and there are a ton of gamer types here with serious incomes. Which also makes it important that I actually get some local exposure. I know a couple of local painters that are staying busy enough to quit their real jobs. They are good painters to be sure, but I feel like I am on par with them or even have an edge. The other thing is that I am not trying to get rich doing this. I just need to bring in enough to help with some bills. I have a good part time job that I am going to keep. Wish me luck!

In the interest of attracting the fan boys, here is my next project:

I think it seems fitting that I am painting some Skitarii since I invented tech priests with sniper rifles:

WHAT??? I mean all i really want is a little recognition. Maybe they could have been called Demarii Rangers? Right? C'mon GW, let's give credit where credit is due.

Ahahaha! Okay, need to go spray those Demarii!

I think I may be the only 40k fan who is completely indifferent to the whole mechanicus aesthetic. My personal pref aside i bet you will do an awesome job on these guys! Especially armed with your new skills :)

Thanks Zab!

Well I got primer on them. First I added some really small lava rocks that I pilfered from an old lady's landscaping in the neighborhood. The lava rock has awesome small bubbles in it that I hope show up when I am all done. I also added some crackle medium to get a cracked desert mud effect. I think the GW crackle paint might be a better product, but I am not going to buy any until I use up what I have. Unless I happen to end up in a game store or whatever...\

Zenithal priming:

For this kind of priming I just start with black primer in the AB and then add drops of white primer as I go, it works pretty good.

I could have done another layer of white primer, but I wanted to try something different. I took the figures at this point and hand painted some really strong pure white highlights. This is something that Alfonso Giraldes showed me and it worked really well to get to some highlights placed early on.

I'll let you know how it turns out ;0)

Here is an after pic of the Skitarii Alpha that I did the white under painting on. The effect is subtle but it's there.

It's neat technique that I will definitely use again.

I am trying to paint these guys fast. Not at a dead sprint but just to see how well I can quickly bacth paint a 40k unit. So far it is working out pretty well. One thing I might have done differently is painted teh cloaks red first then attached the back packs. Those little hoses and what not that hang down are a PITA to paint around.

Here's my progress a couple of days ago. Somebody left these pesky Knight Titan legs laying around... say, I wonder if a KO'ed Knight Titan might make a good diorama with these guys... ;-)

I'm interested to give that priming technique a try. I don't have an airbrush (I can use white or grey spray out of a can to get the overall zenithal white-over-black priming), so the brush highlighted underpainting look promising. Your models look great.

with the white brush work on the black grey base it almost looks NMM. Nice red too I have found when painting red to leave the highlight points in base coat white and painting the rest varying scale of red, then a few thin layers on red ink for the highlights.

SaintToad, yeah I don't see why you can't do this with spray cans. I guess to copy this I would go black to grey then paint the white. I have also had really good luck with colored primers and even spray paint. I know there are mini specific cans of spray paint but I have always used stuff from the hardware store and been surprised by how good it is.

Canny, I am going orange on the highlights for the red. I guess that will set off all the blue lenses. I would say it was my idea, but if you look closely at the box art they have strong orange highlights on their red cloaks.

I'm rounding the corner on these guys. I had a couple of false starts on the non silver. My metallic paints are in a pretty sad state of affairs. I have all the Reaper metallics but they are less then spectacular. So I had to fiddle with them to get them to pop a little more. A couple of drops of ink seems to get them perked up pretty good. Pics soon.

Thanks man! I feel your sentiment. I am going to try and strike a balance. I will let you know how it goes :) BTW, these guys were painted for fun and took about 18 hours. Probably too much for a commission but I bet I could shave a few hours off.

Another thing that I am finally getting through my thick skull is that more light = better pictures. I have a really bright window with a white shade over it just opposite my new photo spot. I took the picture there and I am really happy with it. It shows my highlights without any glare on the red. I fyou look at the picture of the Pathfinder robot in my gallery you will see that I was struggling with that glare.

Fantastic group Demi!! I agree with what Terra says! Earn you a bit o'Money but don't let it kill your hobby because it will be a pitty.

Great SBS on the freehand!! Thank you for sharing ^^

Excellent work, especially given the time spent painting! The OSL looks eery and convincing.
I think the effects of the highlighted undercoat are evident and very effective (especially on the hoods of the cloaks). I shall definitely be trying to find places to adopt that technique!
