Hi DFD, unbelivable hey! I read that the author of \'Eragon\'---Christopher Paolini---started writing the book when he was 15yo and finished writing the book when he was 19yo. Really amazing!

I decided to read \'Eragon\' a while back and really enjoyed it. The book reads smoothly and there\'s plenty of action to keep you reading for hours on end. Also, I really enjoyed the story.

As far as the movies goes, I\'m not going to see it. Mainly because I don\'t want the films images to mess with my own mental pictures of the characters and places in the book. I\'ve also read some pretty shocking reviews of this movie and from what I\'ve read the guy who plays \'Eragon\' in the movie is a dud actor.

Yep! I\'m going to stick to the books on this one.

Well I disagree. I would call Labarynth great. The details are phenomenal, like the great scary goblin castle has milk bottles on the front step.
The movie is full of those things.
The story is good and keeps moving, the characters emotive, and the humor top notch.
Dark Crystal has less convincing puppetry, though a better story, and similar humor though less of it.
I would have a hard time saying which is the better movie, but I would not have a hard time calling either great.

I second that. Labyrinth is one of my favourite Fantasy Movies of all time. Dark Crystal goes right after it. I haven\'t seen mention of my favourite Fantasy movie yet though: The Princess Bride.

What I wanna know is why no-one can see the potential for making dragonlance films .. .. much better than Eragon.

Sorry for the double post...

Last I checked they were making a Dragonlance Movie, animated. It was first mentioned on Lucy Lawless\' blog where she talks about Voice Recording for Goldmoon.

It\'s humourous (thanks to Terry Jones), very well conceptualised (thanks to Mr Froud) and eminently entertaining. It lacks a strong plot and fades badly towards the end. It\'s an advanced Muppet Show - Good, but not a \'great\'.

Here\'s a spoiler for you...

JONATHAN ROSS SAID IT IS SHITE.

That\'s enough for me, bless him. I cringed when I saw the trailer :(

I think one of the problems with this movie is casting Jeremy Irons. They should realize that anytime he is in something fantasy/sci-fi, it is a stinker, unless someone feels Dungeons and Dragons and The Time Machine were good movies.

He should stick to playing eccentric characters in dramas.

As far as the book is concerned, it is indeed highly derivative, but not bad for being written by a teenager.

Eragon

I agree on most points here. I am a big fan of the inheritance novels but what I saw on the screen this past Sunday glossed over a lot of the hard plot points that are set up in the following books.

1) Eragon and Arya\'s \"love\" interest is overemphasized in the movie (obviously for there to be some kind of love interest period) but in the books, this is much more one sided with Eragon pining after Arya her her treating him like the youth he is.

2) Saphira is voiced well in the movie, but her character is scripted as being much more compliant than she is in the books. She\'s a firecraker in the novels and extremely jealous of her rider. Unfortunately this got reduced and there are no real conflicts of interest between Saphira and Eragon

3) Injury: in the books, Eragon is seriously wounded by Durza and is not able to ride or wield a sword properly afterwards. In fact, most of the second book, Eldest, deals with Eragon training while dealing with his disability. Since there\'s no disability in the movies, what will he have to personally overcome in the second movie?

Ah, but since when we determine literary quality of published work based on age of the author? The point is, if an \"adult\" writer presented something like Eragon to a publisher his chances of being published would be not very high (not say close to 0).

In fact, nobody wanted to publish Eragon either, so he self-published and marketed this book as a work of a wonder-child (or rather wonder-teen) who wrote this when he was 15. Yes, he might appeal to people from 10-14 age group who might find reading something of a higher quality too difficult. However, when I hear claims that Eragon is the best and greatest fantasy book after LOTR I can’t help it but wonder how many OTHER fantasy/sf books but LOTR (and Eragon) these people actually red.

@ skeeve - No argument from me about those claims. Comparing the quality of Eragon to the greats in the fantasy genre is laughable. Nevertheless, I think the kid deserves some respect for pulling it off. Hopefully his writing will mature as he does.

Come on people. Eragon was good at least. If you want to see shite go see Mel Gibson\'s Apocolypto! Jesus Christ that movie sucked! lol

You lie! Mel Gibson don\'t do \'bad\'! :p

I can\'t recall one movie he\'s either starred in or directed that I didn\'t like.

The only other big-ticket name that comes close is Tom Hanks, and I can think of a crap movie he made (Catch me if you can). I never saw it, but if Leonardo was in it it had to suck. lol

Chris from The family Guy: \"How does Kevin Costner keep finding work?\"

I LOVE that line. :bouncy:

As far as Eregon goes, I\'ll catch it when it\'s $7.99 at Walmart (bargain bin).

I figure about two weeks then....

Markus, I adore Catch Me if You Can, its on my top 15 movie list!

and I was so dissapointed to hear that Saphira had feathers, thats what made me want to wait till it came out to movie.

She didn\'t really have feathers just plated scales on her wings. They resemble feathers but truely aren\'t. She , I think, was slightly based off of one of those dinosaurs, not velocorapters, but the ones they believe to be like great great great great great great great great great great ansesters of the chicken you know? ???

Now that I think of it though they made Saphira a chicken! lol

If the trailer showed some of the effects \'highlights\', then i would beg to differ. \'Lair\' on PS3 looks as though it will be more convincing....
