Oh I completely agree with that, Farin. It\'s disgusting.
It\'s just sad that people read those books and then start placing stereotypes on those of us who happen to live the Vampire lifestyle. Yes, there are alot of people, mostly teens/young adults who almost wholly do it for the attention it gets them, but there are people like me, for example, who see Vampirism as far more than just a fad or passing craze. A Vampire is just what I am. It\'s my spirituality. Yes, I drink blood on occasion, but I am mostly a Psi Vamp. Vampirism has a serious and proud community stretching all over the world.

Say WHAT!?!?!!?

You drink blood on occasion? Psi Vamp? You are a vampire? No Shit?

I\'m searching for the right emoticon, but I don\'t think one exists for this occasion.

I often eat blood jelly (mostly those made from chicken or pig), they are delicious

Okay Falela, we\'re talking two different things here.

But blood pudding from any animal is still gross as hell.

I wanna get a little more info about this whole blood drinking thing. Psi vamp, all that. It sounds absolutely bonkers. I mean, I\'ve seen plenty of the goth lifestyle to know it\'s not for me, but then I make some choices that others might have trouble understanding. Maybe not, I\'m pretty awesome.

But I gotta know more about this blood drinking psi vamp stuff. I\'m not even talking about the \"why\" aspect... I\'m sure there\'s no explaination that could make me understand. But I gotta know how you go about getting blood to drink. Is it yours? Someone elses? Do they know? How do you prepare the blood, or does it just go down straight, as is, super fresh? Blood coagulates really damn fast and no way is it good for your system.

Psi Vamp? I don\'t even know how that could be real. Like, stealing thoughts? Man, I am off to google some of this stuff. It sounds absolutely bat shit nuts.

:D poor Scott has lead a very sheltered life ;) but we still adore you and your box of Kleenex:drunk:

Donna, I dunno about sheltered. But I have never, ever come across this blood drinking psi-vamp stuff.

http://psivamp.tripod.com/

I mean, really? I gotta say Occultist, to each their own. I guess I\'m happy for anyone out there, Vampire, Witch, Catholic, Muslim, or whatever who finds solace and guidance in their chosen lifestyle.

But how the HELL does drinking blood make any damn sense? What are the benefits?

Gotta say Anders, when I see pictures of your goth stuff, and the wierd goth clothes and the lipstick and nail polish and all that, there is ONE thing that I don\'t see in the goths I\'ve been exposed to...

Smiles.

My brief brush up against the fringe of Goth society was all people exercising their right to not smile. And I always found the irony of twenty people standing around, all wearing the dyed black hair, the nail polish, all wearing some kind of leather studded stuff, all not smiling and all pasty white making fun of the two people walking buy wearing a \"Nike\" shirt or something for those guys being conformist\'s and not thinking for themselves.

I love to have fun! I smile when I hear good music! I make jokes just as much as the next guy, and I don\'t riddicule other people for what they are wearing and how they look (because that would be stupid). I don\'t know how the goth scene is where you live, but the ones over here like drinkning, dancing and goofing around. lol Vampires don\'t come into the picture, however... Most goths I know think zombies are much cooler!

Actually, most of the early music labelled as \"goth\" is quite funny! A twisted type of humour, but humour nonetheless.

Yup - gothic angsty vampire trend -

Black clothes
Black Nails
Black Eyeliner
Bad Whiney Poetry about how no one but Vlad understands them
Cheap Plastic Fangs and a lisp cause they only wear them for special events.

Run into these individuals all the time in Austin - wannabe\'s. They\'re almost as bad as the newly converted \"hereditary wiccans/witches/(neo)pagans\" who\'ve read one bad novel about the Craft and decide that thats whats been missing from their lives and whose parents belong to the local Baptist church.

100% my experience with Goth.

Anders, I couldn\'t tell ya what goes on in Sweden, but it sounds VERY, very different to the stuff round here. My old roomie sort of converted gothism, after grunge went mainstream and he needed a new label for himself. He wasn\'t a happy dude, and he probably just needed a hug, but unfortunately most of what I know about the goth scene is from him and hanging out a little with his buddies.

Our goth scene has pretty much kept to the original ideas and concepts, I\'d say. Most people I know prefer the old punk-ish bands from the early 80s. The subculture is centered around the music. Lots of people don\'t have any funny hairstyles or weird outfits, but those who do do it because it is fun and a way to be creative (although a certain conformism is probably inevitable).

I guess the start of goth going all \"serious\" and \"gloomy\" was The Sisters Of Mercy, although they are also quite funny if you look beyond the surface. During the 90s a lot of \"Sisters clones\" appeared and this is when things really went pear shaped, I think, because the copycats often didn\'t spot the sarcasms and humour of Sisters... Then it went further downhill when metal bands started doing \"gothy\" metal.

Well, I\'ve learned in my lives that sometimes it\'s really not worth it to try to argue/defend some things. You either believe it or you don\'t, simple as that. I know what I believe in, and I know what I am, and that\'s good enough for me :)
I am enjoying this conversation, however

No doubt. Anything centered around an something that projects a strong message, be it music, books, gaming, whatever, is going to attract like minded people. Like minded people are gonna share similar traits in fashion and other stuff too. Part of why I like this forum is that I know no matter WHAT, I have at least one thing in common with the person posting.

The gloomy aspect is certainly the main pervasive theme as far as I can tell around these parts. There\'s no \"goth picnic\'s\" \'round here my friend!

Occultist- Fair enough. Don\'t mean to attack you or anything. It\'s just so damn wild. I would like an explanation on the blood drinking thing. Not the \"why\" aspect, but I just wanna know how it\'s possible? Where do you get it? How do you prepare it? Do you prepare it?

I never try to defend the posers in any lifestyle, not even my own.

@anders - What you\'re describing sounds more like classic punk from the day - the whole reason we wore black was it was there. Listen to the music and have fun were parts of it (as were some truely incredibly ugly bruises in the pit).

@occultist - my issue is not with the lifestylers/true believers - its with the surface attached individuals who just don\'t get it - the its cool and trendy crowd/the it\'ll piss off my folks crowd. If I had a dollar for every pasty faced fakir who walked up to me at a con and after placing a hand on my shoulder \"thanked\" me for feeding them I\'d not be working over here in the land of sand - I\'d be living on my investments. And this was at cons w/o VLARPS going on.

Not surprising. Goth, or what came to be labelled as goth, was one of the directions that punk took when the original punk \"hype\" started wearing off. Some of the earliest bands would probably be seen as punk bands by most people.

You know, when i started this topic , i thought \"Hey, Halloween is coming around , maybe somebody will see this as a cool idea to give the kids a good scare \"

And now ?

I made Uber freak out by mentioning the name of the whorst \"vampire \" movie made

We found out that one of us IS a vampire

Scott got his mind blown:D ( and yes, we do need a proper smiley for that )

Steelcult gets inaprobiately touched by strangers

And we had a short comparative analysis of the goth scene on borth sides of the pond

@Scott: I never did drink blood, but i guess as far as preparing it , there are enough chemicals that can be used as an anti-coagulant. Aspirin would be my choice. If you want something that sounds more aprobiate for a vampire , use \"Potion of Hecathe \". It´s a wiccan potion made from the inner bark of the willow - it contains salycylic acid just like aspirin (actually this is how aspirin was first \"discovered\" )

And i heard of the vampire scene before and know that it´s not the same as being a goth. It was an interview in german tv a few years back , and i have to say it was actually very interesting. The dude they interviewed drank the blood of his girlfriend and vice versa.

And if you think that´s weird:

Theirs an artist here in berlin who practice the indian sundance ritual on people who pay 150 € each for this experience. For those of you who haven´t heard of it: The sundance is a ritual were hooks ( just like the ones Scott uses proffesionally for half pigs ) are pierced trough the skin of the warrior, then he is pulled up on chains. While hanging on the hooks the body releases a massive dose of adrenalin and endorphin. And no i won´t try it.

@Ritual: Thanks for that insight on the whole history / black-attire thing. One Question, where would you see the point where early punk movement split up into punks and goths? With The Smiths ?

BTW, i know 2 goths. One of the regulars at my local games shop and one of their employees are goth. Both smile quite often. Same goes for teh goths i went to school with. Maybe the whole nihilistic poser thing is something american ??

Anyway thanks for everyone for this VERY interesting and entertaining discussion:beer:
