golden demon advice

hello there every body

ive just come 5th in th uk gd08 with a pretty average hary the hammer. next year im going to try a vulkan he\'stan. i started a thread about snow bases, where i got a load of great advice, so here i am again:redface: im going do quite a bit of freehand on it, using the artwork in the new marine book for refernce (only inspiration, mind). so heres my question(s)

Do you think i should:
1. do a battle damage on it
2. do windblown snow clinging to it like davidr\'s ulrik
3. use forgeworld pads
4. make greenstuff 1s myself
5. do a snow base
3. a desert base
4. a jungle altar one (my current fav)

at this rate you will have someone painting it for you as well.

seriously, work on an idea you wish to do and ask for help on how to go about getting the results you want.

no piece is going to do that well if it\'s just other peoples ideas.

First thing I would like to say is.....

Gold , silver , Bronze ....
There is no 4th 5th 6th 7th or 35th.....

sorry but that is a partilar button for me...

In the last 2 GD\'s I\'ve entered 3 models for 3 trophies...
techniques , methods colours or anything else have othing to do with it.. The key is to look at GD not as a painting comp but as a design comp and pick something that will fit within their worlds.
do something you like the way you want and after painting take a critical eye and take away aything that may lose marks.tidy up painting, finish basing but don\'t ask for advice on what to do before hand . one thing all demon wnning models have in common is that they are personal to that particular painter.

As said there is no 4th 5th 6th etc who ever told you that is talking bollocks.

If you think you are that good then enter the Euro-MIlitaire ir Ravage open and see how you stand.

GW work on first past the post onthe day of whatever takes their fansy and fit the current fluff anything else is errelevant

Firstly as other guys have said enter what you want to enter, if you want ruins on the base add ruins on the base same with snow etc.

If your unsure then you can fiddle around with it see what looks good where.

With golden demon you can never have a cert way of accomplishing anything.

I have seen entries bomb out in one GD then come back to another a little revamped but then win something.

You could plan what you want to do forever, execute it flawlessly and have someone beat you because in somebody\'s opinion it just looked right.

main advice play around modify stuff see how it goes together then do it when you feel it looks right.

I always come up with loads of ideas each year, but when i get round to doing one i like i get fed up or finish it by christmas. The problem with this is i get way better by the end of the summer and never enter that item. These days i just paint minis which look cool for the whole year and pick the best ones.

that\'s the best thing.... at the end of the day in any 1 2 3 comp it comes down to a massive amount of luck on the day... same in any event , top sprinters bomb oyt in the 100m olympic final due to a niggling cold they picked up that day or something distracts them .. 1 2 3 isn\'t the best way to award the efforts of painters .. open systems with gradings and the like are far better.. but GD is 1 2 3 simple as....

if it doesn\'t win keep trying... as long as each time yo take something you feel happy with it and if it doesn\'t place you can honestly look at it and see why then you will do allright.. If there was a straight formula for success then eerybody would follow it and then it would be no different to the lottery it is now..

one kind of tip is make the model as interesting (if not more so) from behind as from the front.. The judges spend most of the day looking at the back of the mini et you still see so many minis with banners painted beautifully on the front and nothing on the back...

Like they\'ve been saying, no one thing will win you a contest. You can take yourself out of the running by making silly mistakes, not paying attention to all the little details (painting the back and underside of the model as well as the front for example). If you pay attention to all these little problems the judges will have a lot harder time giving the trophies to someone else.

Do something with style. Do something fun. Do something that fits in with the background/imagery of the piece. That doesn\'t mean an Ultramarine has to be fighting a Genestealer in the snow, but it\'s not a bad idea to keep history and whatnot in mind when thinking of ideas.

If you\'re doing Vulkan He\'stan, then do something that matches his character. I haven\'t read the fluff for him yet, but Salamanders are quite private individuals. They spend very little time with their fellow Marines when they aren\'t fighting, and they are known to create/maintain their own unique wargear. Their planet is all fire and lava, and they generally have a very dark (African) kind of skin tone.

Speaking from a color scheme standpoint, the jungle altar thing could work well. I\'d recommend looking up some Mayan/Aztec kind of ruins and maybe looking for something with a lizard or snake in it, to steal the iconography.

As I have been in discussion with someone who had been watching the judging and apparently there were a number of figures being discussed for consideration in one particular category.

when i was at the cabnets, i bumped into mark lifton, very nice guy, and he was telling me about how some of his winning entries had been entered 3 or 4 times! and that the commisar, he won a daemon with, was entered 3 times, and the orks he did two years ago, the boys and the boss, had been entered twice, and by the way hes\' a fond believer in the saying \'try again\'

i think ll ill just do it my own way like you siad, but sill, any one know a good source of jungle plants? think im going fo a stepped aztec temple style, mybe an altar

oh and im going to pay a lot of attention to the back, thats where the drake scale cloak is

go to any fish/pet shop and you can use them. you can also cover them in glue and add flock like talonicus\' libby on tigress

For a high quality miniature you probably want brass etched foliage; you\'ll find it at the bottom of this store\'s webpage:

At £4.60 per sheet it\'s much too expensive for ordinary tabletop miniatures but it\'s bendable and looks excellent.

Jungle basing is great fun! Plastic plants can be good, but I personally tend to hardly use any fake plants at all: here and here are two examples of jungle bases done with thyme, moss and various other small plants. I also use coffee grounds to make a dark, loamy soil of years of compacted vegetable matter. If you dullcote or paint over the plants, they won\'t go brown. I\'ve made some of the more delicate ones sturdier by heavily varnishing them before painting.

If you\'re willing to splash out, Scale Link does some cool brass-etched stuff. I have some of that, and it\'s very nice to use.

*edit* Sauce beat me to it! The Barrule stuff actually looks cheaper and has a bit more variety. Bah lol

good job he didnt meet mike at gamesday with his hammer then that would have scared him off for sure lol

when i was his age i was wondering the exactly same things theres never any harm in asking.

all i want to see is his harry the hammer hint hint

I don\'t care if it looks crappy or fantastic (TBH it boosts my ego when I see minis that aren\'t as good as mine.. a bit of a rarity on CMON) I like to see work from new painters, it\'s what keeps CMON interesting.

First thing I will say to you my lovely is ,DONT do a mini to win a demon.there in lies much misery ...
You will put in a load of hours and at the end of the day, with Games Days first 3 past the post system ,you are at the mercy of whimsical judges.( though this years judging seemed better than usual ).
DO a mini because you are PASSIONATE ABOUT IT .! :bouncy: :bouncy: :flip: :flip:

Next, the OFFICIAL fluff on Sallies is RED eyes, Black SKIN.THATS GOSPEL !
Nick kyme is doing a novel for B.L about them and on BOLTER & CHAINSWORD he gave the definative WORD.

And agin, As someone who loves \"ON CAMPAIGN \"models, be warned,good battle damage will almost double the amount of time you take on a mini, especially big boys like the stuff I generally do.

And Agin If doing some putty work on a mini DONT use GREEN putty, especially if you are a novice sculptor.

Get hold of some MILLIPUT or MAGICSCULPT(I use M/SC), you can smooth it with water or flob/spit and when dry you can sand it or carve it ( you CANT do that with green stuff.
