Thanks for the comment everyone, nice to see I'm not the only one here on New Year

@ Pate and Rugne: I think I see where you're getting at, it does seem antiquish or unpolished, and a bit too close to the mane color. I haven't thought about following the gems colors, seems logical, maybe it would be too yellowish in the end tough, I always prefered brownish gold to yellow gold.

But after reflection (And sleep) I won't rework it. It's pretty fair for a first try, and I'm afraid I would ruin it if retouch it.

@ Proph: I don't think I will post a step by step, as I only followed Crispy's excellent article for precious stone, but I'm flattered that you'd ask

Okay, horse is finished, varnished and based, halfway checkpoint on this project
I'm pretty happy with the base, I think my basework is improving too.

Wow man, he's (she's?) beautiful. I don't like the tail or fetlocks, but that's definitely the sculpt and not anything against your painting.

The break from painting defo helped you out! My nitpick would be on the mane of the horse, I think what I am seeing is the shading from the main body color in the recesses looks to similar to the color of the horse mane making it look a little messy. My thought would be to maybe glaze those areas with some dark grey or something? I think that would solve it.

True what prophet says, I find these horses have a great shape, but the hairy bits, especialy the taiol, leaves a lot to be desired.

@Scott: Sounds pretty nickpicky ... not sure what you mean tough, I believe I used different colors, but I did the body a long time ago so... maybe it's the pics :\

The more I look at it, the more it bothers me. It's such a shame that a beautiful horse, with that beautiful paint job, has a tail that terrible. Have you thought about GSing a new one? The mane's ok, the fetlocks...I can live with...

The tail is an atrocious sculpt. I guess those interns have to learn somewhere...

Thanks again for all those great comment, it motivates me a bunch. I'll try to make the rider live up those expectation.

@Proph: Sadly my GS skills are far below my painting and it wouldn't be much of an improvement. I'm currently practicing sculpting by adding bits to my bases and I plan on developing that skill eventually.

Update time, first shots of the rider.
Firstly, I got to apologize, the early stage, clear primer and exposure of the pics create quite an eyesoring sight.
Nonetheless I think you can see what's done, and I need feedback as I'm navigating in the dark with all that NMM.
I think I'm getting a hang of it, I'll most likely go back on it to improve it later on; but for now I'll move on to covering other bits of him.

the face seems nice, kind of hard to tell anything about the armor though, the pictures are a mess! It looks like you have to turn up the contrast quite a lot on your nmm painting. but then again, may be the pictures...

Aye, the thing with clear primer is that all that bare metal tend to confuse the camera quite a bit, doesn't help the wip shots for sure.
I'm still new to NMM, I think I went from black to white, maybe not in the right places, some highlights need to be starker and more precise maybe. It will be clearer when the surrounding bits are painted as well.

Okay, update time.
Paints are not flowing my way lately, I'm having more trouble with everything as I should, and nothing ends up as good as I want it. Nonetheless, this guy is moving towards paintedness.
Hopefully it will all be better by the time I call him done.

No kidding, Cheelfy. You always get such good coverage, both the horse and the elf's cloak. What's your recipe? White base, bleached bone, yellow? Or do you use the foundation?
