These threads always amuse me. For being such a mean/suckey/bad/evil/corrupt/greedy/awful company, GW seems to sell ALOT of product and much of it ends up being PROUDLY displayed HERE.......................So do ya really love them or hate them????

Should I be worried that the GW store I visit is on a street prodominantly known for selling platform shoes and vinyl clothing? When they ask me what army I collect I tell them House Steiner. The old guys get it and laugh and the young ones wander off wondering what I\'m talking about. LOL

I just took a little trip, I went to two other GW stores nearby and found that they are all nice and extremely helpful and the one that\'s closest to me is the one I\'m griping about. I think I just need to stick to going just to The Gaming Pit because they are extremely helpful and an awesome store and you can play with an unpainted army, that\'ll be better than rushing to paint up an army.

Geeks go by a large definition, there are some \"quires\" of geeks that are total assoholes, no less entitled to have a job at GW, like the real passionate hobbyist. There is no question on the application form saying \"are you an ass in any way?\" so it just depends on who you are dealing with.

As for payment in products, it is something that is done, by really bad bosses, but that certainly is illegal, as far as I know. Product giveaway as bonus or advantage okay, but as wages, hell no. And I\'m sure a big company like GW discourage that, officialy at least. I personaly think of it as an awful form of abuse that one should not get away with.
Depending on the legislation, there are such thing as mandatory overtimes, up to a fix number/week, but they are rarely used, there are cheaper ways to get workhours done...

As I have said earlier wage in products does not happen..
compulsory overtime does not happen .
however the embarassing enthusiasm most GW staff possess is through a straightforward enjoyment of the job..

The don\'t get paid in minis, but they minus well be because the majority of them end up using their whole pay check on minis. That\'s what I\'ve seen.

Miniwages aside, I don\'t think GW pay any of their employees very well. I doubt even their sculptors or \'Eavy Metal team are rolling in it.... but all the guys I see at GW seem to be having fun. Maybe they will all regret it soon

some of the long standing sculptors are well rewarded (jes goodwin & perry twins)

essentially most of what we see are retail assistants.........and that is never going to pay huge amounts. the real money is in the creative and development areas (not so many of those jobs)

there will always be people who want to work for GW to \'feed their habit\' normally these guys do not last long.

over where i am the GW guys have a good degree of detatchment from things, they are a good to just chat to, and genuinely helpful. they are hobbyists too you know!

Hey! I managed to bake bread, play with my kids all day (my wife is out shopping with her mother), relentlessly monitor my placing in an online painting competition, and contribute to a \'GW Sux\' thread.

All I buy from the GW down at the Eaton Center is paint and occasionally bases.
Which reminds me. I need more bases.

I have never had too much contact with any GW employees, since there are no stores around here.

BUT...when I went to a gamesday in Chicago, every single GW person I spoke with was extremely helpful and polite.

I spend my whole pay check on minis too (or at least most of my disposable income after rent, food, nappies etc), and I DON\'T work at GW. Get a grip!

GW employees are like everybody else. Some are great and some are complete assholes. I\'ve known plenty of both.

At Games Day 05 in the GW history section, we were informed that GW has an annual turnover of £135m. That is a lot of monkey, I mean money :]

Yes, but turnover is not the same as profit. GW\'s profit last year was only 100,000 pounds, which is a disaster for a company with thousands of employees and an annual turnover in excess of 100 million. GW is in the red zone between profitability and loss.

Your wrong, GW has a backland (dunno if it\'s said like that in english) of investors and banks, they spend ALOT of their money on production and expanding, opening stores all over the place, not only to expand their name, but the hobby, as that is what you can do in their stores...

Have you ever used the store facilities? The staff? Painting tips, army tips, conversion tips, gaming tips, GAMING! painting, tournaments, events .... ARGH! I could go on! If you have? Then you know that you pay NOTHING for these services, all you do is get the minis... and you can have bought these off Ebay or another store and they don\'t complain!

You aren\'t even allowed to bring coke or candy into the cinema unless you buy it there for crying out loud!

So before someone says that GW sux and are in the red zone, look into the backland

They are strong... and they will not die, not now, not ever..

Uh, I don\'t have anything against GW and never said I do. In fact, over the last couple of weeks of constant bitching about GW, I\'ve more often than not sided against the GW-bashers and said that people should stop complaining. So, that\'s my first point.

Secondly, GW is a company, with shareholders. The shareholders want a decent profit off their investment. Everything GW does is from the strategic perspective of increasing their customer base and increasing the amount of money customers spend in their stores. Right now, GW is barely turning a profit. In fact, 100,000 pounds is such a small amount for such a large company, that they could just as easily have had a negative balance at the end of last year. This could be explained away as part of a restructuring or big investments for the company\'s future. But if GW continues to show such a small profit, then it\'s share price will continue to drop, and it\'s shareholders definitely won\'t be happy. This is all simple economics, and has nothing whatsoever to do with my personal opinions about GW. I really really hope that GW can get out of its present problems and stay afloat, because I love the 40k universe, and GW is what got me in to this hobby in the early nineties, so I have lots of nostalgic feeling for the company.
