GW lost the plot a while ago...

(No offense Mr Eavymetal)

They have moved from a servicing a \'hobby\' market, to servicing a \'toy\' market.

They made Radio One\'s mistake and forgot their mature customers.

They failed to realise that the business they are in constitutes a \'passion\' amongst many of it\'s long-term adherents.

They went for the \'quick buck\', rather than the long term payback...

Their High Street \'presence\' now means nothing with on-line businesses gaining more ground every day.

I could go on ad nauseam

I am going to repeat myself here, but I used to love GW, who didn\'t???

Now however, I wont buy their stuff as a matter of principle. I love their older models and still purchase them through eBay..at least that doesn\'t feed the demon directly.

Rackham, Warmachine, etc..who needs GW???

When you start buying away from GW you realise that there is a whole new world out there. Very few people go back.....

The sheer quality of stuff from peeps like Rackham, Warmachine, Dark Age etc. coupled with the fact that they still retain that essential \'passion\' for the hobby makes GW stuff seem very sterile indeed...

Glad to see the numerous post since list evening. To summarize i agree with the lot. I have felt that GW is heading torward corporate ruin, since all the passion and caring have been sucked out of the hobby by the suits and lawyers that seem to be running the monarchy there. No feedback from the peasants seem to be the policy in there mighty kingdom.

@ Avelorn- I did not mean any slight to the \"Eavy Metal team. They are superb but seem to be way underutilized now in favor of the garbage that has made its way to the forefront.

I guess the way I view the painting posted by GW and in White Dwarf is like this...

When I go to an art gallery, I look at the artist\'s works for inspiration. I am in awe of techniques and achievement that I hope some day to inspire to. I view the pages of WD and the GW website in a similar way. I am looking for artform in it highest level to give me a lofty goal to strive for. I am not at all inspired by garbage paint jobs that I could duplicate with a Q-Tip and some craft paints. When the younger gamers paint I have found they understand where they are as far as talent goes, but are looking to someday be great like in the pages of WD. They want a challenge, and there is no challenge left when you lower the bar like it currently has been. Just my opinion..

I seem to recall a very similiar thing happened at Wizards of the Coast...seems to be what tends to happen when a gaming company gets too large and start worrying more about the dollars and the board and what not. I guess success is not always a good thing.

Perhaps GW believe in, and cling to the \"Games Workshop hobby\" (how short-sighted and blinkered is that), without realising that it\'s only brand loyalty and ignorance that keep people tied to GW? Once ignorance is lost... oh crap, remind me what GW are doing to retain brand loyalty?

Excellent point, finn. It\'s certainly applicable to me, now that I have a local source for other manufacturers. Their delay with the Wood Elves indirectly lost them a customer.

Uhm, but it is the fall... ;) Too late anyway, they chose to do Ogre Kingdoms first. *shrug* No matter how beautiful those Wood Elves are (and they are gorgeous), I subsequently located alternatives - alternatives that I\'d been ogling on CMON and dreaming of fondling in my grubby little paws..

see we are backward...we started with confrontation, warmachine and reaper ect.

and now we are just finding GW, just starting to paint them since Paint Aid, its been quite recent. so we must be backward ;)

Okay, I have been holding back on this..

Firstly, I don\'t hate GW..I just hate current GW. They have been a force for the good and I suspect that we wouldn\'t even be having this conversation without their input. This site would not exist.

But, we need to make a huge distinction between those people that really inspired us all (I am not good with names, but Jervis, Chambers etc..add your own as necessary) and the \'corporate suits\' that now seem to be running the (cash generative) show. Damn their eyes!

Err, that was sort of background...:D:flip:

My real point is about something Moderrhu said.......\'Ogre Kingdoms\'. These sculpts are utterly crap! Perhaps it\'s just me??? But I doubt it. I am a big fan of Ogres/Ogryns and have bought every single one that GW ever produced, but this new range seem to be just big fat men wearing dustbin lids...

I thought that the first yetti(sp?) thing I saw on CMON was a vintage sculpt from the 80\'s. It came as a surprise to find out that it was new!!

Gnobblars..they are good, but they are just snotlings aren\'t they???

The humour, the fun, the passion.... has all gone. Sad really.

Heh, since Ogre Kingdoms has come out, I\'ve noticed an increase in how much the classic Citadel C23 Ogres have been going for on eBay. Why, it\'s almost as if people want to play an ogre kingdoms army but not with the new ogres... hmmmm. :D

Though on the other side of the coin, I happen to like the new maneaters. Those are fairly nice ogres. The rest of them are pretty lackluster, if not outright crap.

PS -- Btw the old C23 ones look like this: http://www.solegends.com/citc/c23ogres.htm Maybe folks will think those are crap, too, but I think they have a lot of character.

Apologies if what im about to say has already been said but i didnt read the whole thread-

IMHO \'Eavy Metals standard has far from slipped, its as good as ever it was, it just hasnt improoved. Essentially GW have given up on \"showcasing\" their armies with dramatic paintjobs and hard to acheive techniques, the standard hasnt slipped but it hasnt caught up with the times, still the fleshtones are using the classic layering of a brown, brown mix with dwarf flesh, dwarf flesh, dwarf flesh mixed with elf flesh, elf flesh that has become a bit of a trademark. In such a way \'Eavy metal is no longer the painting benchmark, they do a damn good job, but its slipped from being \"unobtainable\".

For \'Eavy Metal to regain the crown they would have to do what Golden Deamon painters do- Pre empt the next advances in painting. This does not mean EM have to go chasing golden deamon winners but just \"raise their game\" to be impressive again. Rackham are a classic example of how a good paintjob can sell a miniature and dont try and tell me it hasnt worked because even i have been almost seduced by the smooth clean cut style of rackham painted miniatures.
