GW Price Hike

Pricing Update
In June we will be increasing the price of some of our metal, plastic and hobby products. This price change will take effect from the 1st of June.

I think that is there as required by law, since it is a yearly event and GW must pay royalties on it something like paying for the use of the idea of yearly taxes or something.

When isn\'t GW having a price hike? Now that they are including all parts for all possible conversions to a model/mini; I don\'t doubt they are hacking up the prices.

I just hate it for the guy wanting a simple Land Speeder, and having to pay for the Typhoon, Tornado, Master of the Ravenwing, etc bits along with it.

Or the one wanting a simple Bike and has to pay for the attack bike modifications as well the Ravenwing squad conversion kit all at once even though they just wanted the simple bike!

Marines will come packaged as single for $20 USD because they will includes all heads including beakie for people to choose from for this ONE mini, and all the options needed to make any variant of a marine from scout to terminator.

I also expect Tyranids to just have a single box, as well Necrons. Once just mutates into something else, so include all the possible parts for the mutations per mini, while the other just assimilates other things.

Orks will also include random other company products for conversion into looted \"stuff\", so EACH Ork will cost $100 USD to cover the cost of adding the other companies stuf into the box randomly.

GW never ceases to amaze me with how they try to grab more and more money for less and less. Like having to buy a new codex every 3 months isnt bad enough? :flame:

I like GW, I like the mini\'s, I like the game, I like the backstory and I have disposable income to waste on them.

I have no other hobby which cost me less, fencing, martial arts, video games ect are all expensive
ie £200 on a new fencing jacket or £120 on three new video games.........Oh and stick you hand up if you throw money into EVE or WOW each month.

Im also buying a £500 HD tv i dont frikkin need........all because I want one.

Simple fact is I enjoy my hobbies and im happy to hand over cash in return for that enjoyment, GW are a business and need to be financially viable.

I think if you can honestly say that the minis you\'ve painted and played vs your mates with weren\'t worth the money then you probably need a new hobby...........even at GW prices:D

Another point is that unless your a gamer, your not going for painting asap your going to try and improve your techniques .Having more detailed kits will make this easier as they will well have more details:p and will probably be more interesting to paint. Tbh i dont mind paying the extra few quid to get an extra few hours of enjoyment out of it. I just spent £20 on a FW tau battle suit because it looks slightly different than the £12 GW version because i thought it would be more fun to paint. The extra money also makes me want to make it my best model yet as it cost that slight bit more and i want to make it worth it, so it also pushes me to try harder. Another point is now i will have to wait longer before buying more mini\'s so it will get me to
1) Spend more time on the ones i have so finish them to a higher standard
2)Finish the shelves and draws of half done minis i have:p

Granted if i could avoid a price increase i would but considering the time spent on a mini i dont really mind spending a little bit more on the next one.

As generulpoleaxe has said GW is a Business, not a charity and in the end their major target demographic customer is in the 12-16 age range who\'s spending is supported by parents.
If they (the parents) are happy to keep little Timmy\'s occupied via a hobby then they will continue to pay.
Older adults involved in this hobby have the discernment to decide whether to continue or not. (It\'s not really an addiction you can stop.)

It boils down to this, Do you have to have X,Y or Z bright new shiney or can you live without it?
If the answer is; I can Live without it, then fine, do so.
If on the other hand; Like me you know its an obsession, learn to control it. :)redface: Yeah just like I did on Sunday at Warriors Bazaar.)
Since I\'m not buying anymore armies and only buying what I intend to paint, I\'m being far more selective and therefore spending a lot less.

(prices going up is part of course due to the inflationary practice of fractional reserve banking, it\'s your money that is worth less, not the price going up[supply and demand is another part of it] for the most part)

add to this increases in taxation and you have your reasons.

and those that are complaining about £2.50 per model when buying twenty five, wake up you prats, you readily spend £10+ on a single man sized model of theirs because it\'s more important in the game!

£2.50 for a good quality mini is a bargain.
being able to game on good quality tables for no, or little charge is a bargain.

i realy would like to see all of the people who bitch about the price rises constantly, go into business for themselves, it will wake you up, it did with me.

Sorry but much of that is just bollocks. GW have been cranking prices above and beyond inflation for years. It\'s got f*** all to do with GB, they\'ve been struggling for ages. You\'re paying to keep their outdated business model afloat.

I\'ll guarantee that anyone around these parts who did go into business wouldn\'t be stupid enough to open a retail chain.

You can apologise for them as much as you like, but basically, year on year, they\'re selling less and less product whilst continually cranking prices to try to keep themselves profitable. It\'s totally unsustainable and it\'s suicide. They need to SERIOUSLY rethink how they do business if they want to be around in 10 years time.

Haha are you kidding me! I know people who blow their whole student loan on a PS3 + Games at the start of term and still manage to survive. Now when its bills + food vs minis then it gets tough.

BTW I\'m a mature student atm and so its even harder for me yet I still manage to get everything I need.

Anyway GW suck (I bought the ratlings) :drunk:

At least the managers here in Canada swear to know nothing about a price increase... however Canadian HQ did just get downsized and there is probably a massive power vacuum stopping any useful information from spreading right now. So who knows what\'s going on :p

When I was a student (wait..you\'re still awake!?! =)) - I had no *expectation* of being able to buy minis aswell as food and shelter. I purposefully didnt buy white dwarf for three years because I knew it would be torture. lol !!

As for GW, well, they\'ve always been the same, it\'s nothing new. You either wants the games and minis enough to pay for them (and it\'s only ever been slightly more than you think they\'re worth, relatively speaking, no more or less because of the way your sterling depreciates), or you dont and you buy somebody elses.

I can see it hurting the actual gamers more than the painters/collectors. If you\'re buying armies, be afraid - but like I said, that\'s nothing new. Oh, and you could always go paint all the stuff you do have while you save to buy some new stash? Just an idea. =)

Amen to the retro idea! I\'ve got an old school deathguard here with powerfist just waiting for some paint.. I\'m thinking of trying one of these really rich and colourful plague marine styles I\'ve seen done around here on CMON...

Picking and choosing is the smart way to go.

Kind of related but has anyone worked out an approximate value of $ per point in a 40K army? I did a quick count the other weekend and my 750-ish pt. Ork force would cost about $400 Australian. I was pleased that I\'d stockpiled those miniatures a few years back. When Orks came in boxes of 16 not 10.

Another thing, GW has progressively adjusted (downward) the value that their paints have. They have gone from Made in UK pots @ 17.5 ml down to made in China 12 ml pots and the price has gone up. It\'s probably no big deal but I do think the pot design lends itself to drying out and needing replacements more often.

Yes they are a business, and yes they have a need to make money - but there is a difference between milking a cash cow and flogging it.

yes their business model is outdated, the brick and mortar stores cost a fortune to run, due to rent, business rates and utility bills. All of which have been pushed up drasticly over the last ten years due to goverment taxation!

They have pushed the prices up more than inflation, that\'s supply and demand, they just over did it.
They are still more healthy than people think, just not as healthy as they should be due to a lot of wastefull spending over the years.

makes more sense than most posts here..
nobody is forcing anybody to pay.. Hobbys are optional people ....

Not making excuses for GW .. their business model is really on a knife edge and simply doesn\'t work for this kind of business.. It may have done twenty years ago but the internet has changed all that.. The retail stores cost a fortune and even more of a joke is that I can\'t go in there and buy what I need .. I have o Mail order it which means going back into the shop again .. so two round trips on the bus cost £6.40 ... I pay £8-10 for a single mini.... let\'s sayx 5 so £50 making the total cost £56.40 or ... I sit on my ass click a ouple of buttons and buy 5 x £6.99 with free postage on ebay .. same odels same quality same condition less pissing around £34.96 .. It\'s a no brainer... and I can make a short trip and reach 5 stores...

They could save and make so much money potentialy by closing down the whole retail stores side and increasing online services. which Is why I believe GW will never die ..

As for the proposed prices sounds like it\'s a bit of a hike.. Currently plastic boxes at £12-15 are great value look at cold ones , chaos knights., but if they jump up to the proposed £25 that is a hell of a jump to justify. but as always it\'s the simple matter of choice. As Mike says it really isn\'t an illness.

I went out to prove you wrong, but you\'re right.

Revenue went from £53.9M to £61.2M for the six months ending November 30 (and I\'m probably mixing accounting standards in those numbers. Millions is what we\'re talking about). Their cost of sales went from £16.3M to £17.5M and operating expenses went from £37.6M to £40.4M.

Percent wise, that\'s an increase in costs of less than 10% but an increase in revenue of nearly 20%. Their overall bottom line went from £0.1M LOSS to £1.5M PROFIT.

That\'s not too shabby at all. Sounds like the wallets are voting in the affirmative.

Rambling off profit numbers is one thing but how much product did they sell to make it that profit. If the new number show they are selling less but making more, that is a problem. It makes the shareholders happy but it shows that the gamer and painter is paying more but buying less, not a good trend.

Kind of off-topic, anyone hear a rift building between Forge World and GW.Though the grapevine, I hear that GW is going to stop selling FW. I see alot of the FW models being done in plastic.

Yeah you know it makes sense:D

I\'ve spoken to my local GW manager, apparently the plastic boxes are not all going to jump to £25, the pricing is based on their \"in game\" importance so units like Greatswords are costly because of their \"elite\" unit role (makes you wonder if anyones at head office has even played with them lol) which makes sense fiscally, as GW bumps their importance in game and then bumps the price accordingly.

The simple fact is that there will most probably be a 1 to 2 pound hike on most box sets/blister (just like last time) which will make bugger all difference unless your buying a full army at a time.

I for one am quite happy to trade that extra £1/2 to keep GW afloat in hard times.

Still if they didnt increase their prices what on earth would we have to
:cussing: about each june?lol

i suggest if you guys really want to get the ball rolling, consider contacting fil, razza or others on here and have them relay a message to rick priestley or jervis johnson and see if they could join in a forum discussion on this or even a debate between three people. a GW employee like rick or jervis, a store owner of an LGS, and someone on here.

send an email and see what happens. then whenever someone starts another thread on this (i for one am guilty at one time) we can direct others to a thread with a good debate on it.

Never going to happen, FW is based entirely on GW\'s Ip, if GW don\'t allow them to keep IP rights, FW either go bust or have to think up some new army themes pronto...

Never Going To Happen.
Any of those people attempting to justify GW\'s policies would be regarded as the companies representative and put themselves in a very difficult situation.

What A lot of people are forgetting is that GW\'s Main investor base (Stock Market Shareholders) are Pensions and Insurance Fund Companies expecting returns on their investment, not Joe the Wargamer with 20 shares living in his mothers spare room.
