If you guys had ever been to GW head office you\'d know why thier prices keep going up! The place is friggen HUGE! And that\'s just the foyer (complete with 12\' tall space marine sculpted in white marble no less...)
It takes trainloads of bling bling to keep a place like that running!
My last GW paints have been tossed in favor of Vallejo paint. (I\'ve washed out some of the bottles for basing stuff) And I won\'t be going back.

Yup, GW head office is quite large, though it is something of an amusement park as well. You can\'t forget Warhammer world or the themed bar! I can think of more preferable places to enjoy a pint (I wonder if they\'ve got their own special Warhammer world beers? Sad if they have!). It\'s good to know that part of the money we spend on GW products goes towards funding bloody great space marine statues and interior design that looks like something from a fantasy B-movie! I bet all you folks who live outside the UK really love that, what with it being so easy to travel from I dunno... Australia for example to the UK just to experience the wonders of Warhammer world and drink Stella in a mock banquetting hall!

Boo hoo hoo, GW has a nice office.
Boo hoo hoo, GW is trying to make money, not work hard just to provide a luxury for other people.

Yes GW is over-priced. Stop buying their stuff.

Out of curiosity, is GW privately held, or is it traded publicly? Who are it\'s majority shareholders? Board of directors? if you want something changed by the company, either buy enough stock to be able to enforce your opinion on how it should be run, or write to the board of directors and/or the shareholders.

Vallejo is the best!

Buy Vallejos game color range, the colors are powerfull than the citadels and the whole range of Vallejo is greater than citadels.
by the way! i work for gw a lot of years and i tell u: this company made his end by its own cause they must always look on his stocks, not to the people who playin they games:(

Maybe it\'s just me, but I think GW\'s pricing/marketing is primarily geared toward making money. How else will they stay in business?

And another thought... If it\'s too expensive for your taste, don\'t buy it! It\'s as simple as that. It\'s not going to kill you if you don\'t buy what \"everyone else\" is buying.

\"\"\"Maybe it\'s just me, but I think GW\'s pricing/marketing is primarily geared toward making money. How else will they stay in business?\"\"\"

well gee theyd probably stay in business by making set profit margins like every other business out there and competing against other companies with great prices and increased quality..... oh wait, oooops they dont have any competition. pretty much like apples 4% market share vs microsofts. GW can do any thing they want and they know it. odds are when you walk into a store the store will pimp GW products because 1. its most popular 2. they have to sell alot of GW products to put in more orders for the minimum order amount GW enforces. thus to stay in business you nearly need GW. abuse is hardly business. how much profit is too much? appearantly there is no such thing as too much greed and too many fat cats running thier fares over this world.

\"\"\"And another thought... If it\'s too expensive for your taste, don\'t buy it! It\'s as simple as that. It\'s not going to kill you if you don\'t buy what \"everyone else\" is buying.\"\"\"

well then why dont i just lay down and die? why dont i just say screw it and not buy anything? why not stop buying music cd\'s because thier prices are fixed through a multi company conglomerate? why should i buy dvd\'s when they cost less to produce than vhs but cost more to buy than a vhs 5$ on the average?

why buy GW instead of buying other games and try to high hell to find local tournaments, play groups, and other fun places to play? well unless your in one of 10 big cits across the US these groups and areas dont exist or are hard to find. and what do you know, as GW opens stores across the US they are killing local stores which are sometimes the only places you can play non GW alternatives. GW would like to say thank you to independant retailers. you will now be assimilated ever so slowly.

who knows, maybe now that your store is gone you can work in GW\'s. at least when wallmart knocked out mom and pop and tons of other business\'s they kept cut throat prices. GW\'s is the only player in its field and its abuse is evident.

its not as simple as \"dont buy it\" its as simple as doing what these fine folks are doing and not bending over and taking it. talking about it, writing about it, sending emails about it. organizing something. if you dont like it why talk about it? maybe to build support? maybe to find you arent alone? maybe to spread more awareness? maybe to find in this day and age you can still do something about stupidly lame abusive companies?

well, take your own advice, if you dont like what the majority is saying, post elsewhere! why dont you go to the GW forums and play with all the kiddies. let those that care voice and take thier time to shout out about something instead of telling them to not care and basically shut up and play dead.

GW pricing

Thanks for the investors link. BTW, i found this letter written to the chief executive at this site:
http://investors.games-workshop.com/presentations/Games Workshop Pricing Policy.doc

Basically, he says \"Since people keep buying our stuff, prices can\'t be too high.\"
and that they are \"charging premium prices for premium products and services\".
Uh-huh.....

That was long-winded War, and if you had written it to GW, it might have made an impact sufficient enough to make the reader yawn before deleting it.

Your extended kite-tail of a rant is evidence that you know nothing about business. Your blatant over-simplification of the process of doing business is shockingly and embarrassingly bad. They DO have tons of competition out there, and if they don’t keep up on their products, then they will no longer be the standard by which everything else is judged. Hell, if Warzone didn’t suck, I’d be buying their stuff. I don’t have any inherent loyalty to GW, but they have the best stuff, so I buy it. They do not exist solely to take a minimal profit for the noble pursuit of providing the financially challenged with toys. They actually want to have families and nice homes and put their kids through college and silly nonsense like that. Maybe one day Unicef will get into the wargame business. Until then, everyone is going to have to suck it up, and *gasp* actually have to PAY LOTS OF MONEY for their luxuries. You know, just like sports cars, and big-screen TVs and hot tubs? I’d love to see you guys bitching on Porche’s website about how “They don’t cost THAT much more to make than any other car, right?” First off, yeah, they do. Second, it is a luxury. Plain and simple. Lamborghini is going to continue to charge $250,000 for a fiberglass toy, You’ll still have to pay $5000 for a hot tub, you’ll still have to pay $4000 for a big screen TV, and if you can’t afford to pay $45 for a model tank, then you’re probably not going to be driving any sports cars with hot tubs in them, either. Some people are going to have to settle for the Ford Pinto with the bucket of warm, soapy water in the passenger seat, and bitch about it. Such is life. Kudos to GW for at least having the courtesy to make their stuff affordable to the general public WHILE keeping their quality up.

Besides, I’m sure if the “evil corporate money grubbers” at GW were only out to screw everyone out of their money, they could have found easier ways, like making sneakers with lights in them, selling stock in Enron, or charging access to web-sites where irate gamers come to basically say:

\"Andy Chambers is the devil! GW only wants to steal all your money! How much profit is enough?\"

Right? Besides, the original question here was why should the gamers have to foot the bill for new paint jars? My answer: The same reason that the computer user had to foot the bill AND frustration of the redesign of Windows 98. They screwed up. Every company does.

I know most of you have complained about the prices of GW stuff over the years. A while back, we were talking about this on another forum, and since I am a Finance major (BS) I took a look at the financial statements.

Myth #1 - Games Workshop is hurting, so that\'s why they\'re raising prices

Actually they are doing very well, and can afford to charge these amounts because a) the key demographic (teenagers)n have more disposable income than any other group and b) they are aggresively expanding in North America. Surprisingly, the bulk of their sales are not the UK or US but continental Europe.

Myth #2 - The paint is crap compared to Vallejo

Actually, they\'re fairly close, but I grant that Vallejo have a much smoother flow (anyone know why? come on you chemical engineers...)

Myth #3 - GW is out to screw everybody

Simple rule of business: what goes around comes around. If GW goes past the point of no return (selling thimble size paint pots for 3.50, and 6 plastic chaos marines now cost $50) then people are not going to put up with it, and play video games instead. Or buy I-kore, Dark Age, Reaper, or any of GWs competitors products.

Myth #4 - Nobody plays anything but GW
This is because it\'s been around longest, and is the market. Comparison wise, I think their products are decent, some far outshining others. However, it\'s up to us to help along cool, FREE game rules, and neat minis. I-Kore are similar to W40K in so many respects, and Reaper pretty much devotes itself to the RPG/Fantasy Niche, Dark Age is the only line I\'ve seen where the concept art is sort of original. Even Confrontation is pretty similar. So if so many of these lines are similar, and GW is established, has support and hobby centers, easy to find products, most people play it. But not all.

and Finally, Myth #5

GW is flush with profit at the expense of it\'s customers...

Hey, that\'s capitalism. Go live in North Korea if you don\'t like it. Just kidding...GW is doing quite well financially, but they want to grow and expand just like any other company. The quality of their products has improved (anyone who takes issue with this, just look at some really old metal OOP stuff compared to the plastics detail) and they want to bring more people to the hobby? Good or Bad? Discuss (500 pts)

Seriously, I hate that it takes a sum of money to get an army together, but it\'s my hobby - and it\'s a hell of a lot cheaper than going to the pub every weekend, smoking, video games, or children!

Back to the post topic, yeah the paints suck. I have freakishly strong wrists, so they don\'t bother me too much, but they could be better....

on topic

I dislike the new bottles too. I\'ve used a good pair of pliers to open them, but I gave up on this after I cracked one of the caps. Couldn\'t get the dang thing to seal after that. I figure it\'s a gonner if you can\'t open it, or after it\'s open, can\'t shut it. BTW, i have some of the old flip top pots from 8-10 years ago, and they still work fine. Why can\'t they just go back to those? (whine whine...;))

Ruined partial bottles.

Yeah, I\'d have to say half of my paint pots are not quite empty when I throw them out.

But I have yet to find ANY cyano-acrylate glue that I can get through before the cap is a permanent addition to the rest of the bottle, no matter how careful I am with them. Even the expensive stuff like Zap-A-Gap lets me down

K
Gee \"War!\", I seem to have struck a raw nerve. My suggestion of not buying GW was intended toward buying from other companies. (Duh, the competition IS out there, as many people well know.) My local store sells GW, but restocks the Reaper and Confrontation minis more often. Why? Because that\'s what\'s selling, what moves better, and is priced more reasonably. There is also a higher turn around in the Reaper line of paints too. Meanwhile the GW stock sits around and collects dust.

Maybe that won\'t hurt GW\'s profits much, but if more people (like atacam) added the power of their wallet with the power of their letters, email, and phone calls, I\'d bet things could change. Too bad you seem to be one of those devoted GW fans/players who is content to sit around and complain via forums, and then take potshots at those who point out the truth.

\"well, take your own advice, if you dont like what the majority is saying, post elsewhere! why dont you go to the GW forums and play with all the kiddies. let those that care voice and take thier time to shout out about something instead of telling them to not care and basically shut up and play dead.\"

Hmm, I guess sarcasm really is a subtle art. I\'m guessing you entirely missed the point since I never told anyone to \"not care\"or \"shut up and play dead.\" Maybe your mommy never asked you the question about what you\'d do if \"everyone else was jumping off a bridge.\" Or maybe you just read too much into a statement. Or maybe you didn\'t read the first page of the forum.....

I\'ve taken my own advice and only buy the GW products that I want. I bought my original GW paints years ago, and now am happily buying a competitor\'s brand (which is what the majority of the posts on THIS forum suggest). GW\'s paints ARE expensive and not worth the hassle to me. I do not believe that the consumer should foot the bill to redesign paint bottles, but it\'s going to happen because that\'s the way the corporate world works. Contrary to popular belief, GW IS in business to make money. They need that profit to stay in business. So you can either do what atacam did and voice your opinion to GW, or you can sit behind your monitor and take more potshots at me. (And if you do the latter, then I\'ll know I got that touchy nerve again.)
