There is a huge difference between keeping people alive and keeping them in a maximum security prison.

I know nothing about prisons, but I am involved with children who have to go to what are known as \'Out of County\' schools. They are not prisons, their security bills are low, but they deal with vulnerable children, some of whom have offended etc....Now I know that these little schools cost between $100,000 and $250,000 a year to the taxpayer. This doesn\'t include weekends.

Imagine what these costs would be in a high-security establishment???

You are entitled to your belief about the taking of life...but your figures are miles off.

Just as a matter of interest..do you pay taxes yet? The only reason I ask, is because a lot of people who like to make free with taxpayer\'s money don\'t actually contribute themselves...just curious...;)

First off, there is a great difference between murder and justifiable homicide. You would not be killing someone because you want to, you would be killing someone who has proven they are dangerous to society. In other word you would be protecting society from these people who do abhorrent things.

Second, while I doubt it\'s $8000 dollars a day, I know for a fact it is not $100 a year, the average salary of a guard is around $28,000 here. Plus prisons here have three square meals a day, cable television, gym facilities, free education, free medical care and other things that many hard working people who obey the law cannot afford.

My father, who died earlier this year, had Hepatitus C, and was waiting on a liver transplant. For two years he waited on a list, until he happened to get lucky and someone who had been exposed to Hepatitus C died and my father got his liver.
During this time we paid special attention to all transplant goings on in the news.
During the time my father was waiting, a Death Row inmate recieved a free Heart Transplant....Let me repeat this ON DEATH ROW....FREE HEART TRANSPLANT.
The guy was scheduled to die, yet we wasted a heart on him that could have been used on some law-abiding citizen.

This is just entirely disgusting. Actually no, it\'s revolting. And, I presume, all for a BS \"lookie how we\'re nice people, we treat death rowers like human beings\" PR stunt. :|~:|~

hey, less of the conveniently ;)

But yeah, I see what you are saying... I\'m still not sure killing them is the answer though... maybe we need to spend that sort of money... or give them an island to live on and nothing else

euh, dunno if anybody commente don this, but didn\'t they alreade do something like that? It\'s called australia! fair enough, something good did come out of shipping your criminals to a dried up lump of turf in the middle of nowhere in the end....lollollolollol
Why should I as a taxpayer have to spend my hard earned money to keep someone like this alive when a bullet, a rope, or a couple million volts of electricity is so much better??? You can pray to God for forgiveness, but you still owe society the debt for your actions and in this case the payment should be your life.
Why should the conservation of my wallet be less important than the conservation of someone to whom the importance of life, and personal rights means nothing? In fact the conservation of our wallets is not the issue, but the spending or our taxes on our law-abiding citizens and not these sub-human scum.

I make a pretty good paycheck, but I know single mothers out there trying to feed their kids on minimum wage, which is way less than what we spend on each prisoner a year. Or the retired who barely make it on their social security.
I\'d rather see my money go to these types of people who are actually trying, than those that are a burden or even a hinderance to our society

We\'re not advocating that we deliver the death penalty to speeders, but to murderers and rapists and the such who do not seem be able to folow the rules, and have seen fit to kill, maim and generally enjoy human misery

Or we could tattoo every inch of their bodies with the crime they did and let society deal with them.
Ladies, would you be alone with a man who had \"MURDERING RAPIST\" tattooed on his forehead, I think not.

I think death is the easy way out for these people. Let them be bummed by fat ugly people for 30 years, now THAT is punishment, not killing them off because it\'s easier on society.....

Not easier...safer for society. The only way that you will be 100% sure that they will never harm anyone again is to send them to their maker.

finances...

Maybe if the government didn\'t spend $396.1 billion on the military, it would be easier for everyone...???

That\'s $12,560 a second, which more than covers the the 8,000 or whatever needed for these prisons.

Just a thought...

Well to really protect society from its own citizenswe have to find out why people become murderes and such in the first place. If you don\'t believe that people are born evil, and I don\'t, then something went wrong somewhere. Instead of turning its back on them, society should try to fix the problems that leads to individuals becoming like this, instead of killing them once the damage is done. And I\'m not trying to take away the personal responsibility here, but we make our choices in life because of different things. And if some disturbed people just kill for the sake of it, lock them away, but I don\'t think killing is the right way to go. We must try to be better than them.

I have to agree with Tammy that it is a harsher punishment locking someone up for the rest of their life rather than killing them.

According to the US dept. of Justice website the average cost of housing an inmate is just over 25k a year.

In regards to Scott Peterson even if he is found guilty(and I think he is) as no murder weapon was found and nobody saw him do it, we can never be absolutely 100% certain he did it. I think you need more than circumstantial evidence to give out the death sentence.

People don\'t \'become\' murderers...

It\'s in the genes..we are all potential murderers, it\'s just that most of us are able to resist the, sometimes almost overwhelming, temptation:D

95+% of prisoners don\'t require maximum security. We aren\'t talking about a bit of bent accountancy or \'insider trading\' whose culprits can be contained within something resembling a Youth Hostel.

I can assure you...maximum security detention costs a lot more than $25k

so for american government we went to see the largo fla jail...boys went to see the male jail and girls went to the female jail...thus i ended up at the womens jail...

it was a nice solid concrete building...we were able to ask questions, see the cells, talk to the inmates, stuff like that... then back in class we had to talk about what we learned...

- the women in the jail all turned homosexual (not a joke.)
-there was one woman who owned them all
- the worked for \"points\" you used those points towards things you wanted...snicker bars...extra time outside...you name it, and you could probably save up enough points to buy it.
- they had a bigger bed than most of the girls in my class
- they had walk in showers
-a tv room, with coushined (sp?) couches, and more cable than i have.
- most of the points you earned you gave to the \"head woman\" as a gift so that you didnt have \"things\" done to you in the middle of the night

there is alot more, but i dont feel like getting \"moderated\"

it was amazing how nice the jail was...the only drawback i could see what the homosexual thing....

Yeah, the jail was probably nice except from being...a jail! I don\'t think it matters how big your bed is if you don\'t get to decide when to go to it, when to eat, who to see, etc. etc. The point about being in jail is to not have your freedom.

And the gay thing..I bet the males enjoy some homosexual activity in their jails as well (ever seen OZ?) ;)
And really, who cares about peoples sexual preferences?
(Not trying to attack you here, just my 2 cents)

I do find it amazing that all we are talking about is money. You are talking about human life here, seriously I really don\'t think it can cost you that much, since you\'re all talking money let\'s do the math. If keeping an inmate costs 25k per year that mean that if they are 1 inmate for every 250 citizen you pay 100 a year. Quit frankly I doubt that they are much more inamte then that.
And I don\'t care how you call it, killing sombody wether it be in an organize way or not, is still killing sombody, You could at least have the guts to admit that.
Oh and what happens to all those innocent that were killed on judicial mistake. And please don\'t tell me there is no such thing.

oh no it doesnt bother me at all that they were homosexual...i actually found it intresting...not a problem at all, and im sure the men did the same thing but like i said i only got to see the female jail.

I ask again. Are you a taxpayer? Because if you aren\'t...if you personally don\'t see a third of your wages disappear every month before you even get hold of them, your argument is not only worthless, but mildly insulting to us taxpayers;) No offense intended:flip:
