Steve Buddle\'s own Jena Orechiel, Bronze at GD UK 2003.
http://uk.games-workshop.com/goldendemon/uk/2003/images/largescale_bronze.jpg

And the gold winner at GD Germany 2004
http://www.games-workshop.de/home/games_day/2004/galerie/goldendemon/grossminiaturen/gross_1_jenna.jpg

 Exactly the same freehand, same colorscheme. Dang, I\'d be mad if I were Steve.
Maybe he\'s just flattered ???

that would really irk me if i were steve, i mean yeah, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all that, but to win something when theres an almost exact duplicate that won the year after, thats gotta suck.

er... the German one is converted, so its not an exact copy. I don\'t see what the problem is.

Apart from the conversion and the metallics/NMM, the rest is an exact copy... That *is* pretty blatant...

Yeah, when it\'s this bad, it totally sucks.. but you kinda have to take off of someone else\'s paint job sometime. I mean, how many of us paint our Ultramarines the colro \'Eavy Metal painted them.. and their so bland, it\'s like thier all copies of one another! But as Glyn said before, this blatant a rip off is just stupid..

well, in the case of most armies you are trying to stay to a set image.. but in a contest I have always presumed that it was suposed to be YOUR envisioned miniature apearance.

this is a blatant ripp-off I almost thought this was a before conversion and after. I like the green base more then that plain brown one though.

Wow, that\'s quite annoying. But Steve Buddle\'s work looks much, much better than the copycat\'s. Still, maybe we shouldn\'t be too harsh on him/her, maybe the person was just *inspired* by Steve\'s Jena.

One thing that caught my attention though. Don\'t they in Germany have the rule of \"the mini has to be on an appropriate sized gaming base, detachable from the display base\"? Curious.

Yep that rule is in there.
But you\'ll also notice that the \"Fans\" look to be from a Freebooter figure, which means that it should have been automatically disqualified.
But then again I did read something about a Canadian entry alledgedly winning an award at Toronto which was on a Warmachine base.

I could be very cynical and say that GW judges sometimes change the rules to suit themselves, but I could be mistaken. ;)

Hmm, that\'s rather interesting. The only case when this approach would seem somewhat close to being logical is if there were no decent entries whatsoever and they just had to drop some rules to give an award to a better mini, regardless of it not meeting the requirements. But something tells me this was not the case ...

Mmmm....I had seen this. I\'m in various minds over it to be honest. Firstly, I\'m actually quite proud that one of my sculpts has won a demon for someone else. But I am a bit miffed that it\'s been painted in practically the same way as my demon entry from last year. He even carved all the texture off the tabard to paint freehand as I did.

It\'s not the end of the world of course, and this guy has broken no rules. When I think of the people who have sold their minis only to see them entered in contests under other people\'s names (and picking up prizes) it kind of puts things in perspective.

Bottom line: It\'s a little annoying but I aint losing sleep.

As for the \'Freebooter wings\', the chances are the Judges didn\'t know where they came from. For all they knew they could have been scratch built or whatever. They couldn\'t just assume they were from another manufacturer. If they had recognised them as such I\'m sure they wouldn\'t have given it the prize.

I may well be entering Large Scale Model again this year. I utterly guarantee that this sort of thing wont happen to this year\'s entry ;)

Steve, yours is still better than the imitator. Some people don\'t understand that sometimes \'less is more\'! Those fan things just look daft. Your painting style is much more vivid also. The GD judges should be armed with an encyclopaedic knowledge of GD entries to stop this sort of thing happening. GD is supposed to be about creativity NOT cloning!

The gremans have had some serious problems with judging in the last few years, up to the point that a sword winning entry from a few years ago had blatant pieces of Rackham models in it.
It\'s something that will be rectified if I\'m to believe the rumours, just like the US ones. i do find the rule that if you win a gold, you\'re not allowed to enter in the same category the next year very good, and Germany is as far as i know the only GD hosting country that does that.

The whole copying business is an unvalid argument really, I mean, do you have any idea how many entries over all the GD\'s are copied from Eavy Metal schemes, or from models seen here or on other sites? not so much the painter at fault(well, he clearly doesn\'t have much imagination), but the judges for not knowing their stuff.

now actually it was my entry in open cat last year, called \"border to chaos\". I used the wings of a rackham flying marionette and a piece of flat metal i converted heavily to a sword ... so actually one piece ;) Now they didn´t have the rule, that other manufacturers parts weren´t allowed, so i wasn´t soooo wrong :D :bouncy: .... okay thats another story. It did not get the sword, so you´re a bit wrong on this and none of the former swordwinners used others then GW-parts.

I thought I heard that GW got rid of the rules that you only could use their minis.
I knew it was too good to be true.

was it yours sascha? muh...can\'t remember.....:) Although as far as I know, even the german comp says gw only...but like i said, they\'re a bit weird...they give out trophies for costumes for crying out loud...:)

Things that bothered me about German GD...

1: The judges understanding of GD quality... 2002, they only gave out the Gold in the 40K Vehicle/Monster category, saying there just weren\'t any more entries of Golden Demon standard... Well, imho there were plenty, but why then give the gold to a shabby and poorly done (but converted...) Genestealer-Cult-Magos?
This year, the 40K unit cat\'s display was funny to look at: A squad of beautiful Fire dragons (not converted), and one of Thousand Sons CSM (converted), both easily a CMON 8, stood right beside a squad of Plague marines (not converted, but heavily drybrushed), which I wouldn\'t score higher than a 6 here... now guess who got to be a finalist... At least it didn\'t fetch a Demon... or else...:flame:

2: Allocation of the Categories... In the Open Category, there were some really neat stuff... A couple of guys did two titans clenched in a fight... really great stuff and both 3-4 feet hight... lots of detail... the same guys (I believe) did a large-scale Land Raider (about 3 feet long), which could actually drive by RC; and lots of other stuff... well, here two of the winners in the Open:
http://www.games-workshop.de/picture.php?show=/home/games_day/2004/galerie/goldendemon/open/Offene_Kat_1_Wizard.JPG

Apart from the base, why would this mini go to open category (no, not because the Fantasy single mini is too hard a category...noooo...)?

and this one:
http://www.games-workshop.de/picture.php?show=/home/games_day/2004/galerie/goldendemon/open/Offene_Kat_3_Chaosgeneral.JPG
Why, oh why, open category? Especially as the all-known mounted Lord of Nurgle got a Demon in the Fantasy Monster/Warmachine category?

3. (point of lots of argumentation over here:) The French invasion... Lots of German GD attenders went bananas over the fact that 4 Demons (and the Slayer Sword) were dusted by French... Popular argument: \"They got a GD over in France, why don\'t they participate there?\" Well, the answer is that French GD offers a hell of a tougher competition - it\'s just easier for a French painter to get an award over in Germany... ok, their minis were really great (especially the Slayer Sword entry... duh), but people still find it a bit questionable...

I will just stop the rant here. Suffice to say that GD lost it charm over me. And as I don\'t need to go for other reasons (eg ForgeWorld retail), I think I\'ll just send my next year entry along with a friend (if I get the time to get anything done, that is...), \'cause paying 15 euro for a show of bad judgement is a wee bit too much...

*bad! bad gbh! no rant i said! bad!*

I think you\'ll find that the two open cat models were entered by staff, who are NOT allowed to enter the main categories...

also, I find the whole \'it\'s our Gd, not theirs\' very insulting, fact is the french that cleaned up at the german gd also cleaned up at the french GD. Just because no german entries were deemed good enough by the judges to win the sword, doesn\'t give anybody the right to say the french were there because it\'s easier.entering in different countries gives you a chance to meet new people, and stretch your painting to fit with the style that\'s popular in that specific country. The UK demons are great because so many foreign painters come to the show, and for the last few years, it really has become an international event.

Now, for the judging in the german gd, or any other, it\'s their opinion that counts, not yours, or anybody elses. It\'s 5 people that judge a comp, and if you don\'t agree with them fine, but stop stamping the ground with your feet shouting it isn\'t fair. everybody that enters knows the rules, if you don\'t agree, don\'t enter.

now .... i can´t follow the argumentation here. I think the \"french invasion\" like you call it created another very interesting aspect for german GD. I think it is great to fight with the best painters from different countries for the gold, silver or bronce demon. They showed great work and got rewarded for it, thats the fact. So why not taking this as a goal for next year ... they showed how to do it right, which means there is some space to learn new things ... they also showed, that it should be possible to reach this standard, since the french painters also paint with water and acrylics.

For me it was great, that they took part in the german GD and if i can finish my stuff in time i´d be happy to participate in france next year ...sadly their diorama cat allows only 250mmx250mm entries which is quite small for what i have in mind ....
