Zomg, they have Robert Sawyer as the first \"expert\" on their panel. He\'s a terrible sci fi author, not a bloody scientist. If you want a shining example of his crapdom then read Calculating God. It\'s basically about this very subject, alien civilizations and their concept of God.

Spoiler alert!!!!

The end of the book sees the human race saved from certain death by a mysterious blob that shields the earth from the deadly radiation of a nearby supernova. The protagonist, a paleontologist from Toronto, along with his alien scientist buddies, fly a thousand light years or so to check out this mysterious blob and *gasp* it turns out to be a massive amoeba god that created all life in the universe, so they they could provide it with new DNA to reproduce with.

WORST BOOK EVAR :p

@Alextheartist - Yes, hence why I said Roman Catholic, not just Catholic. Although one can also argue that the Roman Catholic Church isn\'t a branch but the main institution which all the other variations branched off of which technically is true. :)

Ok now I feel sheepish...I meant to say Roman Catholic Church in the original post. My apologies for that. :p

Christianity was able to survive the discovery of the Americas, it will adapt to survive the discovery of intelligent life on other planets.

Not sure when, but if it does I\'m definitely staying out of that one...actually I am going to change my password to something I know I won\'t be able to remember...that way I can\'t log in and be tempted to reply. That wouldn\'t go so well.

Yea, we can do that. That way I don\'t have to change my password....ummm, lets see. I guess the main thing that pisses me off about the movie is the fact that Tom Hanks is in it. I think he is a great actor and it just grinds my gears that he\'s in such crap. The book, well all it was, was a rip off of an already existing, bogus theory. I guess I should start looking for something to rip off and maybe make millions in the process!

I think the discovery of life elsewhere will be worth a few beers in the local. I\'d love it, LOVE IT, if it happened in my lifetime :D

Back to my point in the original post, I was quite flabbergasted that the Jesuit dude felt there might be a precedent for the second member of the the trinity (another made-up idea) having done the same to other intelligent lifeforms, which leads to the obvious question: how many mistakes would God have had to make to have so many redeemer sorts! Coming from a man from a Jesuit background, saupposedly learned in scripture, that\'s a can of worms that needs a lot of consideration before opening. The implications are immediately obvious and ridicule the idea of Christianity.

remember there are 3 main parts to most religions, they are, Money, Greed, and power, before you start shouting me, i did say most not all, if you look in to it you see that its there, noth said,

James 1:16-27
16Do not be deceived, my dear brothers. 17Every generous act of giving and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father who made the heavenly lights, in whom there is no inconsistency or shifting shadow. 18In accordance with his will he made us his children by the word of truth, so that we might become the most important of his creatures.

19You must understand this, my dear brothers. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. 20For human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21Therefore, rid yourselves of everything impure and every expression of wickedness, and with a gentle spirit welcome the word planted in you that can save your souls.

22Keep on being obedient to the word, and not merely being hearers who deceive themselves. 23For if anyone hears the word but is not obedient to it, he is like a man who looks at himself in a mirror 24and studies himself carefully, and then goes off and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the one who looks at the perfect law of freedom and remains committed to it—thereby demonstrating that he is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of what that law requires—will be blessed in what he does.

26If anyone thinks that he is religious and does not bridle his tongue, but instead deceives himself, his religion is worthless. 27A religion that is pure and stainless according to God the Father is this: to take care of orphans and widows who are suffering, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Of course people are going to twist religion around for power, profit and other forms of personal gain. That\'s part of the destructive fallen nature of man.

I rarely take anything I see/say on the Interweb seriously, but I agree with what Shawn is saying here. The faith itself, and its actual teachings if you take the time to read them and understand them, are really fantastically altruistic.

Being nice to your friends, neighbors, and enemies alike? Turning away from destructive habits and dedicating yourself to the welfare of others? These are hardly things worth mocking.

Many authority figures have tried to manipulate religion, and they deserve what they get for it. But this thread is getting way out of hand. Honest, well-meaning Christians shouldn\'t be lumped in with dictators and charlatans.

But hey, everyone gets to make their own decisions, just remember that some day you might be held accountable for them (in this life, after, or both!).
