Jericho\'s Dark Angel (and various side-projects) project log

Okay, so basically I decided that doing this yellow guy is going to drive me insane if I rush it. It\'s completely different from my usual style and technique, and rushing it will look bad and probably not work out so good in the end anyway.

So he\'s on hold indefinitely.

Instead, I picked up a model off my desk that I wanted to paint for a long time, and then I proceeded to hack him up and modify him to be a \"display\" kind of character instead of a gaming piece. So useful wargear was replaced with good looking wargear, added a fancier base and a couple of little bits for flavor... and produced a pretty cool looking Marine Scout.

I even came up with a nice color for the fatigues! And then I had serious issues with how I was going to paint the armor. Just wasn\'t looking the way I wanted, and I don\'t know how to fix it. Luckily I was using a test figure for the armor so no harm done on the precious Scout!

So without revealing the mystery color scheme I was gonna use, I\'ll post the current WIP shots and ask what color for the armor you guys would like to see. I\'ll then compare it to my ideas and go from there.

I just didn\'t want to bias the sample by saying my original chapter scheme :p Anyway here\'s the pics:

Thanks for the help, I hate getting stuck on colors lol

Well I fixed my recipe for dark red armor... yes I\'m painting him Blood Ravens colors :p Honestly I couldn\'t think of a better color scheme to go with the green fatigues. Hopefully Robin doesn\'t mind too much... I\'ll enter him at WEM if you want lol

I looked at a ton of references for scratches, and settled on Cyril\'s technique. Hard to go argue with anything he does :D

PS. Don\'t ask why not all the red areas are painted. I usually do that when I\'m trying something new, I end up painting most of the new color and leave about half of it black just in case I screw it up. So usually that means more work for myself later as I try to match the colors!

Looking good dude, although all of these side projects are going to kill off the Dark Angels progress are they not? lol

Regardless, the work on the Scout is looking fine and dandy. The scratches look rather nice, certainly like scratches but I do think they are rather more extreme in their starkness than you would perhaps find on a Cyril effort.

It\'s not necessarily a bad thing, it gives them definite impact, but even thinner lines for the final contrasting highlights would, I feel, make them look more impressive. I know it\'s easy to say that, as I\'m not the one trying to hold the brush steady, so perhaps you could try getting an extra stage of graduation in there as a compromise?

As for not painting all the bits at the same time, I have nightmares with that. The worst I do is weapon blades. I\'ll completely finish one side, but leave the other just basecoated, then have to match up all of the colours. Nightmare!

Yeah I\'ve done that too :D Sometimes I completely forget about the inside of a sword blade.

Thanks for the kind words and the helpful critique.

Anyway the chips did come out a bit thicker than I would\'ve liked, I wasn\'t accounting for the extra thickness of a black and white edge afterwards. They added up a bit faster than I thought. But I\'m certainly learning a ton on this model so far, trying some new techniques that I\'ve wanted to for a while now. I plan on doing some extremely minor OSL on the goggles and the freehand chapter badge is gonna be nuts. I hate freehand with a passion, there\'s a reason I don\'t do it ever :p

BASTARD! lol...

He looks good, your scratches are looking pretty nice too, I\'m gonna have to try cleaning mine up to match that quality. Personally I\'d try taking the red armour down a bit, Blood Ravens are a duller darker red.

Yeah it\'s easiest for me to get to Kingsway so if you don\'t mind entering at WEM I think that would work out best. Sadly I\'ve got no camera between now and the comp so I can\'t update, and I can\'t say he\'s going too terribly well. Hopefully a day of painting will get him up to where I want him to be.

I really like your work dude. The way you paint clothing is just fantastic. The scout is really great, and the scratches on his armour is just awesome.

This will be my last update for probably the next day or two, I have an exam that needs a LOT of studying still... I spent way too much time painting yesterday lol

Anyway all the red\'s done unless I add some to the boots later. Still a tiny bit of touchup to do here and there (a few chips I\'m not happy with mainly) but all in all I\'m very happy with the progress, and I even have almost everything else planned out by this stage.

Also, I didn\'t mean to bust off the goggles, they\'ll be back

I think I got the other shoulder pad about 98% done, in the photo I noticed a couple things that I still should go back and fix... I tried the rust stains dripping from the chips and hated it, but I didn\'t get rid of all of it apparently :p

Anyway I think these photos show the red a bit more accurately than before, it\'s really not as bright as in the pics I swear! There\'s also a bit of glare coming off the chips on the bone pad, they match the rest of the model with regular lighting.

Work on this model has given me a LOT more respect for people who freehand logos like this on an entire army. Black over a bone background is a bitch if you make a mistake... I had to file the whole pad down to the plastic after the first attempt. At least the slight impression of a mould line on the shoulder is gone now lol

Why oh why did you have to paint a scout...your putting mine to shame!
Fantastic work Jericho, i love the contrast between the red and the white, and the chips in the armour look great, cant wait to see this guy finished.

Hooray, exams are over as of today. I think they went very well too, which is nice. I usually bomb one course per term, but this time around I might actually keep my GPA where I want it lol

Anyway that means this guy should be done in the next 24 hours. I would like to at least have the option of doing a last minute LOTR figure for a Games Day entry.

Damn you Dan! He\'s looking good, but it looks like the left and right necks of the raven on the freehand aren\'t quite symmetrical (but it could just be due to the angle of the photo and the curve of the armor).

I don\'t know if I\'m gonna finish my guy (I still have the entire headpeice, and the majority of the little details and metallics to do...). It\'ll be down to the wire. I\'m a little worried about sealing him. I dont want use my brush on varnish anymore as I keep losing layers when I do... Know where I can find some spray dullcote?

Looking to win another one are you? Looks very nice and clean. Your red is really good, and I think the clothing is excellent. Don\'t think you shold have cleaned up the boots though.

The effect did look good, and I do have multiple hi res shots of different angles, so I\'ll try to recreate it once I paint the boots for reals. But perhaps a bit more subtle :D The muddy boots is definitely part of the plan.

The plan which also includes a last minute white primer Celeborn model from the huge box of never opened LOTR sets from back in the day. Should be able to do a solid version in an evening I think, I\'ll try if I have anywhere near enough time left over to worry about it.

Anyway I took a closer look at the Raven and you\'re right, one side around the neck is a bit thicker than the other. I\'ll try to fix that, thanks for pointing it out. Honestly I was probably just pretending it was perfect so I wouldn\'t have to do any more bloody touchups ;) Freehand sucks! And yet I plan on doing intricate scrollwork based on concept art for the Celeborn costume. Funny how that works.

Quick update before bed :D

Spent most of the afternoon painting at Tom\'s place, and the rest of the time digging around his house looking for stuff he\'s lost lately. Like a sixpack of Dullcote and the new Orc army book :p Found the varnish anyway, and did get most of my painting done.

The Scout is nearly finished, just need to do the face, a bit on the goggles, and then touchups and he\'s good to go. Excuse the terrible lighting on the rear shot, it\'s 4am and I wasn\'t in the mood to fuss with lamps lol

scout0011.jpg

Celeborn is almost done too, I\'m gonna redo the skin though. After that it\'s just hair, a tiny bit of metallic, and then whatever tweaking I feel like to get the rich tones I want in the robes. No pics though because his skin is brutal at the moment. I tried a new mix of old skintone techniques of mine and it backfired horribly making him look kinda undead.

I dunno why but in the pics the dark green is way too dark and the reds are way too bright. Hopefully the Dullcote will help the colors come out more true to life in the pictures later on today. I\'ll add a few chips and scratches to the gun it should help draw a bit of attention that way :)

I think he\'s done, unless I try to retouch the face at all. The sculpt of the mouth was really hard to work with...
