I want to make the clothing prolly an off-white leather, but I'm not sure how dark to make the shadows.. I'm torn between Iraqi Sand and Reaper's Ashen Brown HD color as the darkest shadows, then highlight up to almost white. Any suggestions? Hopefully I will get some time tonight to work on him.

I know you will be freaking out once its on but have a look at the sargent and the darks and lights, totally black in the deepest folds and pure white at the other end. I used a mix of mahogany, sand, and elfic flesh inbetween. there are better examples but Im pretty pleased with this guy.
You can use the Iraqi sand (IS) as the middle tone that will work well. Others may have better ideas but what I would do is use the IS then mix up some of the Ashen Brown(AB) with 50/50 black and take it from there, if your brave you can take it further. Water down your paint 75% water it will take a 5-6 coats to get the darkest shadows but every coat you do make it a smaller and smaller area, so only the deepest folds get all the layers. Once thats done mix some IS and AB together and over lap your darks a bit and slowly lessen you AB to full IS then do the same with the whites on the tops of the fold instead of the recesses.
You will find the whites Harder one of the best tips that gave me instant improvement was the lighter you go the more water you use. wipe of the excess on a paper towl you dont want it pooling, you should be good to go!
Oh make sure to imagin where the light is hitting the mini as you need to make the sadows uniform.

Sorry for the blurry pic, but I wanted to show the progress.. Basically did the tunic with Ashen Brown and washed it with a thin layer of black. Then I started on the IS highlighting. Prolly going to hit it more IS then white. Let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree.. Thanks.

Thats a good start, you can lighten some of the shadows, feather them into the IS as its quite a defined change of colour, you do want that defined change in some of the biggest fold areas where you could imagin the light source making the shadow. Keep it up I like the blue ties around his legs too.
LOL Krule.. No way, the whole freakin head would just be a big black spot.. Hopefully the owner will like her the way she is..
Update on the monk. I didn't like how I covered the tunic with the ashen brown, so I stripped him off and reprimed him. I have the flesh roughed out and plan on blocking out the tunic and armbands with Iraqi Sand, then try to glaze the shadows in selected spots. I think the flesh needs a couple of glazes of midtone to bring them back, but I'm not sure.. What say you CMON?

Paint 'em first and fill in around them there is more control that way. I have only recently gotten anywhere close to decent at eyes. It comes down to practice really. I have some links here that might help but i promise nothing. It really is practice
