Home is where the heart is...

Hullo peeps, I\'m in sunny Devon in a little village called Uffculme - it\'s about 10 mins from Taunton.

Think I may move to Wales tho, seeing as it\'s fast becomming the modeling capital of the UK! :D

help me understand...

Just out of curiosity,

all british are United Kingdomers, but not vice versa?

Are Welsh still considered British? Is that an insult? (hope not)

Where is Cardiff? and who the heck is the Cardiff Giant?

Sorry for my geographical ignorance.

I suppose it wouldn\'t do much good to wish you lads a happy 4th of July, that holiday doesn\'t quite have the same meaning outside of America!!:D:D:D

Right...deep breath....

Think of what UK looks like on the map/atlas. One big island and another smaller island to the left.

Big island consists of 3 countries: England(bottom bit), Scotland (top bit) and Wales (bulgy bit on the left). All that lot comprises Great Britain.

Smaller island to the left is called Ireland. (The Irish are an imaginative lot). The top bit of that smaller island is called Northern Ireland.

The \'United Kingdom\' consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The bottom bit is just Ireland. Ireland is an independent nation with no connection to the United Kingdom.

I know it\'s complicated. I am English and I just had to look this up in a dictionary.

People from Wales and Scotland tend to get a bit miffed if you call them English. It\'s OK however, to call them British or \'originating from the United Kingdom\'.

People from England tend to not get upset whatever you call them because they are used to being called all the names under the sunlol:bouncy:

It\'s all very complicated isn\'t it?!

I\'m English first, British second, and European third (and only so it makes refering to this part of the world easier for folks from more distant parts!).

You know, there\'s actually no such thing as the English nation! On forms and documents that ask for your details, particularly the census forms, there\'s no category to state that you\'re English. Mind you, English is a dirty word these days as it refers to racism and imperialism in the \'do gooders brigade\'!

:rolleyes::mad:

Census form furore...

It was the same in Wales with the census forms...we could be Irish but not Welsh! We could only call ourselves British whereas I\'m sure the Scottish could call themselves Scottish...wtf is that all about?

Ultimately I feel that the whole notion of Great Britain is slipping away, based on conquest and Imperialism, but I can probably subscribe to the UK far more comfortably.

Back to the census forms, we were told that if we didn\'t fill them in we could face going to jail, but due to the lack of a Welsh tick box many people demonstrated, protested and refused to fill them out...I for one as it happens, as well as all my best mates (the feeling was extraordinary in young adults) and there was even a mock coffin carried through Cardiff and delivered to the City Hall full of unfiilled forms...

They only prosecuted the one person in the end and that was dubiously done. The feeling was so strong that if they had gone ahead and charged everybody there would have been riots galore!

As for the Cardiff Giant, I have no idea what it is, unless it was Jack Cardiff who directed things like Jason and the Argonauts (I think). Or maybe it was a big coal ship? Or my nickname? lol

It\'s a mystery to be sure...but have you tried looking at the internet?

same here. and i agree with the rev, the notion of britain is slipping away. the welsh refer to themselves (quite rightly) as welsh, the scots as scots and only the english ever refer to themselves as british.

although there are obviously a load of really talented :p guys in cardiff, there are quite a lot in the west country. i grew up in taunton, tooshy is nearby, finn\'s in cornwall, as is panza i think. i think the southerners rule!!!

Southern softies

Cool - I was beginning to think Wales had cornered the market:)

Off-Topic - but loosley related:

Last weekend I climbed the 3 highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in 27hrs and 25 mins! That\'s Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon. At least I got to visit almost all of the countries within the UK - just Ireland was missing.

Exercise phreak

Hmmm thanks Kat..I\'m not renowned for my fitness - it took a lot of hard work to get myself fit for purpose! I would\'ve been faster too if I hadn\'t been dragging my iron-lung along with me :D I\'m taking things easy this weekend - think I deserve some quality painting time - also known as \'sitting down and not moving\'

You can check out www.exeter3peaks.co.uk for lots of info and cool pix :bouncy:

You fit bugger...

Well done Tooshy!

Nearly fell off Snowdon (Eryri in it\'s old Welsh name - place of Eagles) as it was misty. Found myself on the edge of a huge ridge when the clouds cleared, and looking down to the bottom there was a lake far far away :) Pooed my pants and took a step back. Decided to go back down the way we came after that. Our kit consisted of 1 cigar, 1 compass and one bottle of water...were we stupid or what? People die on that mountain all the time!

Did you know that Cornwall used to be South Wales in the distant past? And that we both spoke Brythonic Celtic languages along with the Bretons of Brittany? :wow:

The Kernows are wickedly cool types :)

Just had a look at those pics Tooshy!

They are some awesome photos...this island is beautiful :)

And by the way chaps, the word Britain had an older and more meaningful connection to the land before all the imperialism, and if that meaning an understanding was still intact, I\'d stand right behind it!

Yours boringly,

Old fart.

the Cardiff Giant...

Yes, well Thank you all for your educating me.

As for the Cardiff Giant...

It is a legend that happened in Cardiff NEW YORK, in the 1860\'s where someone supposedly found a giant man.

The \'fossil\' of a 10 foot man was dug up, and displayed (for prophet) across the area.

He is still on display today.

It is considered one of the great american hoaxes, not unlike Britney Spears.lollol

I remember seeing something about this a while ago on the Discovery channel.

Sorry about the delay in responding Rev but its actually Lloyd - and from what I\'ve been able to discover over on this side of the pond, and west of the Mississippi its rooted in the Welsh word for Grey - I actually sat down one day out of pure boredom and looked up the roots for my entire name - comes out to Grey Male Bear (or Eagle depending on the root) from Czechoslovakia - no wonder I\'m so damn confused all the time!!lol

And if you want to talk about confusing place names theres Nachodoches Texas, and Natchitoches Louisiana - both named for the same tribe of Indians - one is just the French translation and the other is the Spainish.

If all of us Brits (that\'s all four corners of our little land - five if the Cornish have their way :D) can see how big a mess this country is in, why can\'t Blair and his government?!

Madness, sheer fookin\' madness.

Put me in charge and you\'d soon see a few changes! Sort of a democratic dictatorship... hold on that\'s what we\'ve got! Nah, I\'ve got more common sense, I\'d be able to make it work properly! Tony Martin would be a free man, the guy he shot and injured would be locked up for life, the army would be camped out at our end of the chunnel, Birmingham would get the National Stadium, the road network would be redesigned, speed cameras wouldn\'t be a revenue maker, and this country would become more self sufficient. Plus some other stuff that I\'m too fired up to think of right now.

Rant over.

:D
