Lono\'s WIP thread

I\'ve been having a good play with Super Sculpey recently and I bloody love the stuff! It takes me right back to my childhood when I would make all manner of characters out of Plasticine. The plan was to get in some practice before I get back to working on a GD entry I started sculpting months ago (and quickly stopped doing, as I tend to do with most of my projects!) but in the space of about 4 hours I ended up with this dude.

With him at this stage it seems silly to forget about him, so the plan is for him to become a bust of an Inquisitor.

There is loads to do on him, as the initial sculpt work is extremely rough. Everything needs refining and smoothing, the bionics and some sort of addition to the eye (with extended lenses and things) will be added after I have baked him.

I have just been using the Citadel sculpting tool, a pin, and the rounded end of a paint brush so far. Some advice on the best way to smooth this dude out, and other tools and mediums that could be useful would be much appreciated. Also, point out any major anatomical mishaps I may have made please!

From the top of the head to the base of the chin it is just shy of two inches tall, and the few squashed looking bits shown (nose, eyebrow, etc.) are because I had to scan him in. They are the contact points with the scanner glass!

Wow! awesome!

Some thoughts:

One or two scars on the forhead might help to stop it from looking dull and uninteresting... and, um... thats all, the rest is extraordinary.

Now, I will be very mad at you if you don\'t cast this one, cause I want one :p

Poor scanner... lol

This one rocks! I totally would like one also... guess I\'ll have to do one my self if you don\'t cast it.

Fantastic stuff!! and this is just a warm up for GD? I think we have a dark horse here!

I can\'t get over the ammount of detail you have crammed into 2 inches!!!

Fantastic :D
I love the way you have made the skin look authentic, with the creases and wrinkles in the right places (To my eyes anyway) - but (There always is isn\'t there :p)

There is SOMETHING that bothers me about the general shape of the face....

I\'m not ENTIRLEY sure what it IS, so this may not be very helpful lol, but I\'m not sure if it\'s the distances Between the chin/mouth/nose...

EDIT: And can\'t really see from the angles you\'ve managed to scan, but Have you finished the join from the jawline to the neck? - as it looks very sharp from the angle shown...

But it does look amazing nevertheless :D
Can\'t wait to see what you end up with if this is only a warm up!

(In fact - that\'s TWO amazing sculptures I\'ve seen recently that\'ve been labelled \"Practices\"
 - the other being that Anime woman)

I\'ve got it!!! It\'s been bugging me all evening that this guy looks vaguely familiar. The mouth, nose and the general expression remind me of Neil from the Young Ones lol

Thanks for the comments.

I am going to add either an Inquisitor \'I\' symbol into his forehead or some sort of Imperial Aquila stud to break it up a bit. Perhaps some more wires and stuff too.

Dan, I think part of the problem is that the scan distorts it very slightly, but I also think you are right, there is something not quite as it should be, which is why I\'m still classing all this as practicing at the moment. It could be that the nose is a little beefy, and perhaps the eyebrow area is too raised. I never did pay as much attention to anatomy as I should have in art classes, so this is an uphill struggle for me! I may try skimming some sculpey off the nose to see how it looks.

And no, the jawline isn\'t done at all. He\'s going to have a very raised, Cantona style collar, so I\'m holding on before I get started on that.

Neil isn\'t what I was going for, but if that\'s the case I have no problem with it! The mouth is going to get some teeth and a sneer which may change that a bit.

No plans to cast it really, what with IP issues, but if I do something that doesn\'t infringe that in the future and feel it is at a standard that\'s good enough to reproduce who knows.

I have got busy with a new head in the meantime, working the scale down (I need to get down to 54mm to do some of the things I have planned) to about an inch tall.

The right side (his left) is more done than the other. There are some serious eye issues on the other side and I need to sort out the jawline, because he is a bit too David Coulthard right now! The fat nose thing seems to have struck again too. I\'m pretty happy with his profile though.

Not sure what he will be yet, perhaps a fantasy jobby with plenty of facial fluff.

When I saw that first head I thought it had to be at least 2x larger than you say it is. Fantastic work. I can\'t wait to see it finished.

OK, so I did another! Don\'t know what\'s got into me, but this has been the first all night hobby session I\'ve had in an age.

This one I got impatient with and decided to bake it, and once I did, I got impatient again and painted it (quite roughly but it came out surprisingly well) before I bothered sculpting any hair or ears, hence the strange, Cardinal sort of thing going on.

It is about an inch high again. The smaller pic is pretty much actual size on my monitor.

Just to mix completely mix up this thread (and because I am all excited that I can finally get pics using my scanner. Scanning on a crazy high DPI could be a good method for the miniature close ups thread in general discussion perhaps) here are the current painting NLIPs I\'m doing (that\'s No Longer In Progress).

Here\'s hoping putting them here might make me pull my finger out and do some more on them.

40K base (more metallic detailing and plenty of wet effects to be added)

Warhammer Night Goblin (the back is more done than the front I guess)

Hmmmmm I might give that scanner thing a go later. I wonder if holding a sheet of blue paper up behind it would make a good background. Looks like your glass needs a bit of a polish though, the fingerprints kind of give it away lol

I think so. It was one of the last minis I blagged when I worked at GW, and at the time had no clue it was in any way different to the other Night Goblin heroes, but I recently realised that it wasn\'t available normally. Glad I got it, because it is probably my favourite out of all the new Goblin minis.

I really like the model to, LAura bought me the subscription for my birthday, but i havn\'t opened the box as it has a little seal. And id probably never paint it, so its best to leave it as an investment!

Wow... your sculpting skills are amazing. The character packed into those faces is stunning!

As for smoothing out, an indispensable tool to have is a Rubber/Clay Shaper. These are available widely over the internet, but I just nicked one of those rubber cuticle-pusher thingies from my sister and superglued it to a defunct biro :D Also, I have heard that a very diluted wash of turpentine smooths stuff out, but this is perhaps a little risky lol
