Bloodreaver tester. Not finished, yet.

I am very unhappy with how the flesh turned out and have already starting practicing on another Miniature on Flesh tones. I really hate the GW washes for flesh and am trying to learn how to do without washes at all. I need to dilute both the washes and the lighter tones a lot to get a much smoother finish. Lots to learn and work on!

Another way to create some great depth and shadow in skintones is using glazes, which will creatly help with getting skintones more fluent!
There's a really good article on Massive Voodoo blog in their tutorials section where there's a really nice explanation how to go about it, giving you a recipe to start with as well.

Cool, thank you!

I recently discovered Painting Buddha on YouTube and have been watching his blending technique as well. Now to practice!

As I was saying in a previous post, I really hated how the skin came out on the above Bloodreaver. He did take me awhile to complete so in between I painted up the Reaver Bones Clay Golem a white/tan flesh tone. I'd love some feedback on how the flesh looks. I know it's shiny, but that's mostly the picture. I'm now painting another one in a more Black/African skin tone and ordered four more today to practice on skin tones and blending.

Looks like you need a few more color transitions to get more believable skin. There are a lot of good wips around here that give good ideas on what to do. If I remember I wll dig out the skin recipe I was given anfpd pass it on. It is a good starting point for flesh tones.

I know it may sound weird to you,.. but for flesh tones, there's nothing quite like pastel powders for smooth transitions.

Good lord, base coating this StormTalon is taking FOREVER!!

Didn't want to bore you with another unfinished base coating pic. Third layer down. One or two to go, LOL.

Put down another layer on the Clay Golem. He's actually starting to look a bit less plastic-y. I'm probably thinking another 3-4 layers before he's done. I layered his forehead a little too much on this layer. I'll see how it goes and see if I need to I'll try to shade it.

with the layering on the golem, do you mean more basecoating? Because it looks to me like your basecoat is well enough as is :)

A tip to reduce the glossiness is to dry them with a hairdryer instead of letting it dry naturally, this matts it out a bit!

LOL, I guess it's hard to see but I'm slowly layering to bring out the flesh tone lighter and lighter and leave the recesses darker.

Well, I wrote up a long reply this morning and it appears to have dissappeared in the aether...so will try again.

The golem looks like your paint may be a little thick which is giving you that "plastic" look. There are several wips to check out for skin tones around here. Bailey's sbs's are awesome. AndyG and TenBall did a friendly comp with a barbarian mini. Lot's of flesh and gives you an idea of how minor tweaks make a difference in the final outcome. For undead, imho SkelettetS wip shows the best looks possible.Check out BLood As Medium's wip. Not only does he have great skin tones, but is currently doing gorgeous alien skin on some GeneStealer's. I have five different skin recipe's provided by various people. Iirc this one is from either TenBall or AndyG (maybe Trystan). Anyways, i think they are all Vallejo paints and after using the recipe a couple of times it makes it easier to tweak it or just go your own way.
