National Styles

SM - I asked you in my earlier post if maybe you could give examples of classical art that over-exaggerated features for the sake of presentation. I believe a lot of the Grecco-Roman stuff was like that, but didn\'t Michaelangelo or Da Vinci also do it on occassion? My art history sucks, but I think if you could point us to some great works of art that veer from realistic proportions and/or color schemes that would help support the argument against more \'naturalistic\' painting.

I know another recent example are the hands on GW minis (the Mordheim dwarves come to mind). They are way out of proportion and they look great! I\'ve seen realistic hands on minis (DarkSword comes to mind) and they are too tiny to see any detail.

Lobinske sucked the life out of all the miniatures in the land, selling the pigment to raise money and influence the makers of the paint. He wanted to sell only 10 different colours as he thought there was no need to try layering everything in a pretty, contrasting way from dark to light...

His lifeless figures multiplied until one day all the happy, colourful people realised what was happening and challenged Lobinske. He threw accusations around like grenades, talking about his natural style like an evangelist burning with holy passion. \"What\'s wrong with not painting eyes?\" he raged, and \"if you look closely you will see I have many layers to my flesh tones!\" Of course, it was the Emperor\'s new clothes all over again. Lobinske realised he couldn\'t pull the wool over people\'s eyes any longer. He ran for the hills clutching his ugly little toy soldiers to his chest, swearing that vengeance would some day be his.

Or, to put it another way, we all had a massive benny and he f**ked off lol

Link anyone?

He claimed he posted here to get feedback on his minis, but when people told him to paint eyes, do some shading and highlighting, not let paint overlap into surrounding areas etc. he went mad and started ranting about people not understanding his \'natural style\'. To make a long story short... :)

Lobinske was a c**t from the GW forums where he also made out he had masses of experience and painting knowledge.

Good old GW forums... about as interesting as watching paint dry. Mind you...

;)

I\'ve been painting for 26 years, so technically I could say I had masses of experience and painting knowledge. Of course, my stuff sucks, so I wouldn\'t want to pass on any of it. lol

Lobinski-land :D

I was reading through past threads last night (skimmed to about page 120) and every once in awhile I\'d come across a rant by someone who\'s stuff was \'good\', but people were sniping them for some odd reason. Ahhhh... wake up calls... I remember mine. lol

Ah the joys of hearing some mini painter or other whine about being sniped. Always worth a laugh. We all know who you are...

lol

Snipe me all you want! lol

;)

Thanks for the links, Vike

I was actually skimming the threads looking for a good laugh. Specifically, I was looking for any BME nastiness (like I said, I was bored). All I found were a few tame ones. From what I saw he was very blunt, but not overly arseholic. Can anyone point me to some of the \"funner\" ones, I did so enjoy some of the rants by members from way back when.

I also found lotsa \"Star Wars minis\" threads, and TONS of GW rants. This place must just seem like a giant recycle bin to some of you \"old timers\".

Also, I found a thread where Chern got so pissed at people complaining about having to look at terrain that he created a category just for it. I found it funny in light of Shaz\'s recent thread about splitting that category into structures/ground coverage. It seems no matter what we do, people will always want more... lol

@MT: You can name any number of artists who don\'t do \'realist\' work! \'Art\' is as much about self expression (maybe more so nowadays) as it is about technique.

I have always found photo-realism mind bogglingly tedious. It shows a massive talent and skill, but no personality or life!

As for minis, this fella shows how humungous exaggeration makes them stand out! It\'s a 3D cartoon...

I feel the same way. I look at that stuff and say \"WOW, that\'s some great skill!\", and then think \"I could\'ve gotten the exact same results with my camera\". I can appreciate it, but I just don\'t \'get\' it.

Hey thanks for the mention. I really like Allison McVey\'s painting style and seeing many in person at Gencon I could really appreciate the smoothness and sharpness of the details. Similar technical style to Mr McVey but different and more muted color pallete. Still strikes me a more of a classic British GW style, which makes sense considering everything.

I think why my style looks different from some other american painters here is that I look more at historical figures for inspiration than maybe comics or graphic arts. Alot of the US GD entries lately have a comic look with the big NMM gradients and eye-pop factor. I prefer the French GD players, like Bragon with his freehand and metallics or maybe Germany with Fredy. Both of them and some of the other French painters now paint a style that would look good in Eruomilitaire. I guess I just like that style mixed with a Rackham style for NMM.

Did i really write that? Cool!

What makes me laugh is that he was asking for a way to negate the whole voting system. Imagine some bloke just invented the light-bulb and switched the thing on, and some fella says \"Oi, turn it off mate, it\'s hurting my eyes!\"

You COULD switch it off, or else you could tell them to F**k off! Perspective. YOur light-bulb, your room, your switch :D

I was shocked when I read that Mike\'s (McVey) work was being classed as dark and naturalistic. It\'s actually quite the opposite. I\'d say clean, bright and contrasty and I think most painters who\'ve been through the \'eavy metal painting team have a very similar style and treatment as Mike.

Funny, \"clean, bright, and contrasty\" are things I associate more with the \"American\" style nowadays than the \"British\", or am I wrong? So could you say Mike (McVey) paints in the American style. lol

Wouldn\'t it be sweet if Mike(McVey) out of the blue showed up at the golden demons with some entries? (Mike, if you\'re reading this think Chicago)Of course he\'d have to make sure his utility belt had ample \"bat fanboy repellent\".

I wonder if Rlobinske knows what a legend he is?
Anyone who gets offended by being called \"thin skinned\" is probably thin skinned.

Wonder if being thin skinned also makes him a haemophiliac?

He could bleed to death after just one scathing remark!
