oistene's WIP - a mostly dead space

Thank you so much, everyone, I'd thrilled you like 'em so much. :D

Okay, some old pictures to follow. I tried to get fancy with Deathjack, I saw a guide on Facebook for making a marble effect. Sweet, I thought, great way to make those large plates more interesting. So I was going to try it. First did the metal, then I masked the mini:

Then I covered him in white and green.

Finally, I put steel wool over him, and airbrushed the dark colors of the plates.

The theory is that the steel wool would act as a stencil, and leave a marble pattern of white and green. However, it failed - either the steel wool wasn't tight enough, or it was too fine. Either way, the model was pretty much covered in the dark color, there was only hints of the green, not enough to get an effect.

I liked this approach, but I'll run tests before I bother to try it on a mini again. I dropped doing it on Deathjack, finished his coats by hand and gave him a heavy wash to make him look old and dirty. Here he is, wash still wet:

Time for some turd-polishing! I'll highlight, add LOTS of effects, put him on a cool base with skulls and call it done.

While the wash dried, I started on Wrong-Eye. I'm trying James Wappel's shaded basecoat on him - I blocked in the colors last night, next session I'll try the more complex step of laying out the lights.

Wow!! Great effects on those zombie robot centaurs!! I think they've become my favourite piece from you ;)
I specially like the one on the left on the last row of pictures because it has a kind of malicious look, reminding me the creatures from some heavy metal music covers...

Making experiments is fun, you sometimes discover interesting things applicable to other miniatures and not necessary the one you are working on. I am sure your next try will be closer to the desired effect. I need to check what that shaded basecoat is because I have no idea of what it could be.... (similar to zenithal clear/white priming maybe?)

Deathjack is nearing done. Tried my hand at making glow effects by airbrush now - I asked Demi for some hints, bit my fingers for a couple of days, then when at it. Results to follow:

(that last picture looks a bit more impressive than it is due to the light...)

All in all, I'm pretty happy. It is a bit cloudy/chalky - I think I can fix that with an easy glaze when I do the smaller glow effects in the last step. Not sure how to avoid that in the first place, maybe by lowering the PSI, or using a different paint? I've used Warcolors fluorescents (a fix of green and yellow) here, Demi suggested inks (I assumed artist's inks, and I don't have those).

That looks like a good start! The next step is to go in with some darker green ink and line the cracks, then with light green or yellow place some highlights right at the center of your glow.

By "ink" I really just mean a transparent paint.

I just bumped into your thread, and it's amazing how far you've come since your first posts. Very inspiring!

Thanks a lot, folks! Deathjack is nearly done, just needs some more work on the blood effects and a little tweaking:

Also, I've rushed on to the next project. Both to try something new and to try a faster approach, I'm testing a paint with inks-method. I've based a bunch of Satyxis raiders and witches, and given them a 'zenithal' priming by airbrush. Before I started, it looked almost like a ghost army - you see the details due to the paint, not the light:

This approach was a bit trick for me, and it really showed me how set I am in my ways. I have to approach my use of colors and paints in a completely different way, and I'm not sure if I feel that it is working. This is pretty much only the first layer, I decided to add metallics instead of using NMM, and that choice I'm pretty much happy with at them moment.

Looks a bit weird ... any tips?

They look cool but perhaps using the inks is leaving the colours a bit desaturated, maybe another layer? I've not tried this method so I don't know if it would work, it just seems to me that inks over greys from the priming could sap some saturation? Hopefully someone with some experience of this method will have more insight, I'm just thinking out loud in your general direction

yep a bunch of highlights with karak stone or flayed one flesh or the like will up the contrast and make it all pop more like this vid:
I do the same thing with my Table top minis :)

All right, thanks guys. Seems like I just expected too much - I need to keep working the models, add more colors both in the shades and the highlights. I'll take a look at getting the colors I want first, and work from there. And limiting myself to washes seems to just up the difficulty, so I'll add some more paints.

I believe they are def going to be desaturated due to the translucency of the inks.....the way you desaturated a color is by adding black, white,or grey so think bout it if you add a translucence purple over a white primer that purple will become desaturated...in this case it takes away the realism and what not....I personally think the base color then the shade and just finishing off the flesh and important parts etc would give you a faster way and more promising results..

the he death jack on the other hand is fantastic.;)

Very nice. I see that you had fun with the blood effects on this one. :) :good: That glowing green and OSL really make the whole mini come alive. Great work.

I agree with Sheelagh! And I haven't commented it before, but the colours on the base and it's texture are really good ^^

Thanks peeps! I know I've gone a bit heavy on the gore - but it's for gaming, so some of it is bound to come off. And it is the DEATHjack, so I wanted to go heavy. :D The OSL on the inside of his leg is an accident - but a happy one, as it makes the OSL better by about 300%. I'll try to do that on purpose in the future.

Glad you like the base, Maenas - Its pretty much grey paint with a load of pigments on it. I love my pigments for bases; creates wondrous, realistic results with very little effort.

Still working on my girls... as expected, I'm able to fix the colors by adding more washes (and a few base coats, particularly for the lighter colors), but the extra work it takes defeats the purpose. Upside - I'm learning about layering colors to create texture, shape and effect. Downside - I didn't plan for that, so these minis do not benefit all that much. Almost done now, need to do final highlight on the purple and the metals.

They're looking pretty cool from where I'm sitting. But yes, the point was to try and bash out some super quick minis and this doesn't seem to be the way to do that.

Well, not SUPER quick, but the point was to get them out there fast, yes. Yet another learning exercise, since I pretty much think I know how I could do this faster and better now.
