Did you have enough points to get those new minis ! Lol ;).

Good to see you back.

*snort*

Yeah, that fell by the wayside a LONG time ago. If I counted the Vampire from Bones, I think I'm in debt by a couple thousand. And I ask myself each time why I keep the points system going. Only reason I can think of is I'd wonder how many points I'd have.

PegaZus

Stealth Freak
Oh I never leave. I just get stared at by the minis behind the computer. Constantly. And find other priority things to do.

And as for the points, I should think of what to put down for videos. Eh. I'm too lazy right now.

My day off and I doubt that I'll get time to paint. The "honey-do" list grew substantially from when I woke up. I really lament not having a lot of time for myself, and then it hit me that I'll have that time in about 7 years when the first one goes off to college. That's when the panic attack set in. What in the world am I going to do with all that free time?

You know, having kids is great, but having them out of the house is starting to spook me.

Hey... wait a sec...

See! I need to buy more minis! Occupy all that future free time!

PegaZus

Stealth Freak
I'm thinking 5 pts for a video. It'll help get me more minis faster, and that's the goal.

Ooo... did you hear that? It was my wallet crying out in pain and agony. Poor thing. I should go empty it so it doesn't have to carry around such heavy paper money.

Ahem.

I've decided that table top minis should really not be photographed closely. They are an art much better appreciated at arms length.

Gave the pirates something to look through, be it half-way blind and unable to focus on objects at any distance. Not that good on eyes, but not going to worry about that too much. I believe I can improve the looks of this sorry lot a bit by going over with the flesh colors a bit more around the edges, plus dotting in the pupils. And then hold them at arms length.

Just had a flash to the scene in A League of Their Own where they are showing all the lovely ladies, and then Marla Hooch. Yeah. I'm going to start referring to my tabletop minis as Marlas.

Vid after the pics.

Well time for the monthly painting session! Next paragraph is going to be serving whine with cheese, so feel free to skip it to get to the painting.

Oh, Real Life, why do you have it out for me? Between overtime, kids activities, wifey activities, and the general weariness that comes with that, I've had no time to paint. Sure, I could try to paint when I'm tired, but that doesn't sound like a good idea. Maybe I should try it, as that seems to be the only way I'll find any time. But things are looking up! Taking a week of vacation, and out of the five days off, two aren't filled with family fun.

Alright! Painting. It was pointed out to me on the Reaper forums that I'd missed a pirate, Captain Frost. Since I'd already decided on who the Captain was, how to retcon things such that he works? Aha! Undead Captain! So, here's the story: Captain Frost is the current captain's grandfather. He was such a stubborn and mean captain that one night after an ungodly amount of rum, he became deceased. But being the stubborn sort, and with plenty of natural preservative coursing through his body, he refuses to just lay down and stop moving. And there is no way that Mr. Grim is coming to reap his soul until that happens. So a little Moldy Skin flesh, and he's caught up with the rest of the crew on their way to the display cabinet.

For this update, I started in on the clothes. Pirate captain got some Military Blue, Finaela has a nice body suit (bodice?) in Amber Gold, Gruff is showing off his neat Yellowed Bone pants, while his underling carries on in Desert Khaki. Captain Frost, sports Military Blue like his granddaughter. I also touched up Finaela's eye, and I think it looks better.

Vid of the pirate captain being painted after the pics!

Quite, quite. I hate complaining about it, but this is the only (well, almost only) place I get to vent about it. Neither my father who runs a 24 hour service nor my brother who works nights/weekends/24-hour-on-call seem very receptive to my woes.

But I have a new tale of woe! Maybe. I'm rather happy, but sad just the same. I've got an eBay search going for Tau Battlefleet Gothic. Loves me a good spaceship, and they seem to be the only decent looking ones of the bunch to my eye. And what did someone post up? Forgeworld Tau. OMG. OMG. OMG! <insert little girl squees here>

Sadly, I did not win. Any of them.

Tau bombers and fighters? Outbid at $60, went to $61. Meh, okay.

Tau emissary class cruiser? Two of them outbid at $90, went for $91, then another one outbid at $85 going for $86. Pang of hurt there. I would have liked to have those.

Tau protector class cruiser? Oooh... shiny. Outbid at $75 and again at $101. They went for $188.25 and $111.50. Wait, what? THAT MUCH?! Oh, lovely, lovely ship; thy price is as high as your orbit!

Then some rather pedestrian Tau, but still worthy in my eye, but not my wallet.

Tau castellan escorts? I was in at $24 and $40. Lost at $37 and $41. Well, sad to lose, but without the bigger ships... well, I could still find a loving place for them.

Tau warden escorts? Still, I wouldn't mind winning at $23. Went for $32. Not upset.

But this one. Oohhhh! This one was the excitement. This one was worthy of hearing the leather that enfolds my money whimper and cry softly.

A Tau Custodian Battleship. What lines. What lovely lines. Centerpiece material. And the wallet cried as I clicked the confirm button for $199.75. Too much? By far. But It must be had. It was beautiful.

And not to be. An hour before it finished, I'm outbid by a quarter of a dollar. And I watched. And it sat, taunting me. Only a little more! Surely his next bid was for an even $200. You can do a little more. But I held my click.

And as the seconds ticked away, and finally hit zero, a mighty $308.95 it rang up for. Oh the pain. Outbid by $100+!

Someday perhaps, but not today. For I have trod upon the eBay insanity and come home none-the-poorer, beside the pity stare and the slow shake of the wife's head as she fails to understand the need to possess that was unjustly torn from me! Someday!

Thus ends another thrilling episode of Pegazus vs eBay!

Starting to feel better about my emotional loss last Sunday. Found a bunch of other space ship minis from various companies, so I'll have to save up a few pennies to purchase them.

Yesterday was a wreck for me, possibly the worst birthday I've ever had. And it wasn't about hitting the big 4-0, either. Personally, 42 is going to be a fun birthday. I talk about it on the video, but in case you don't watch them, here's what happened. Let the dog out to the backyard at 4AM and decided to relieve myself as well. On the way to the bathroom, I trod through a puddle. The ceiling was leaking water out of a light fixture in our laundry room. NOT what I want to see in the early morning. Mop it up as best I can, put a bucket under the leak, turn the water off in the house, tape the handles on the toilets (as a reminder to myself and little ones to follow Australian rules for the toilets for a bit) and try to go back to sleep. Doesn't work that great as my mind is racing what to do when I awake in another hour and a half. Finally get to sleep by letting my mind wander to this little catchy tune (little NSFW): http://youtu.be/GUl9_5kK9ts. Get the plumber to come and he can't find the leak. Have no idea what happened to it, but the leak is gone. So I've got a giant $95 hole in my laundry room, cabinet's stacked out in the garage, and a constant worry that some pipe will bust at any time. Luckily, someone's home nearly 24-7, so it should be caught pretty quickly. If the leak ever appears again, of course.

But on to painting. Put some Grass Green on the pirates, as it's the Captain's main color. Figured I might as well make it a thematic color across all five, so did touches here and there of what wasn't planned already. Hmm. Maybe that'll have to be the name of the pirate ship. Greener Grass, or some twist of a phrase. Pictures and video.

But then I went ahead and painted some more, starting in on the Dystopian Wars' Savannah air fortress thingy. I've really been intimidated to start it, as I really want to do a good job of it, and improve over the Babylon 5 mini I did a while back. That one I really wanted to do a good job on and failed to live up to my own expectations. Since it's grey primer with metallic Honed Steel on top of it, the paint is really hard to see, so I've added some arrows to it to show what I've done. I'm thinking I might just do a little video on it to fully lay out what I'm planning.

Managed about 30 minutes tonight after putting in an 11 hour day. Stress is really killing me at work, so I should take the stress thread's advice as well rather than just give it. Headed to bed shortly, but love being able to take a quick shot and put it up in less than 5 minutes.

Put some more gray on the main sections of the ship. Originally, I wanted to let some black show through, but I think it'll look better with just a dark wash instead. I'll do that at some point once all the colors are put on. Also started in on the
solar panels or jump arrays or whatever the large blue things are. Based that with RMS Sky Blue (9018) and will go with the other two blues in the triad, possibly going with a spot of black in the darkest, in order to make the mottled pattern.

Glad you like how things are going Aaron. That ship mini is OOP, so it might be a little hard to find. I think it was OOP when I bought it, but didn't have a whole lot of trouble. But that was years ago.

So, some of you may have already seen the next video. I put it up as a scheduled thing, so something would pop up while I was on vacation. Here's what was done. Not much. Managed to get some ivory on the detail bits of her jacket. Oh! And "her" turns out to be Mariel Twinspar. Found that rummaging around on Reaper somehow. Jotted it down, but didn't jot down the exact source. While on vacation, I worked on the Pegasus from Battlestar Galactica. Didn't manage to get to painting it, as I was on vacation anyway, but I'll see if I have time to put up some pictures of it too before I get too far down the road.

Did a bit of ivory on Finaela too. Didn't see any areas that I put on the other three, so won't post up any extra pictures of that.

It's funny, but a month ago I was willing to drop $200 on Tau space ships. This month? Wouldn't even pay $80, much less my last bid. Been getting into Spartan Games' stuff a lot. Firestorm Armada and Dystopian Wars. Need to stop watching eBay.

Got to put on some leather this week. Wait. Leather Brown. On the minis. Sheesh!

Oh real life! You're so much fun. A funeral, a business trip, overtime, and lovely testing make for so little time to want to paint.

But it seems I can manage to buy still. Odd that. Got these during the CMON Black Friday/Weekend sale. Plus some eBay stuff that I don't think I put up.

Let's start off with the stuff that IS NOT MINE. Sure, I get to paint it, but my family twisted my arm to make me buy it. From Dark Sword, two baby pandas (they're stacked), a Victorian cat, a pirate cat, and an emperor cat. Notice a theme there?

Christmas2013001_zpse1fae516.jpg

Then some stuff for me. Akarui from Studio McVey (#392 of 750), Dark Age's Dragyri, Steampunk Tinkerbell, and Wonderlands Project's Mad Hatter Goblin.

Christmas2013003_zps9472d9d5.jpg

Then some space ship lovin', a Drindrenzi gunship flanked by two packages of two Drindrenzi destroyers. Can't recall if I ever showed the one on the right, a Blazing Sun sky fortress. There's a couple more, but I just didn't take pictures of them I guess. Did update the first post to reflect all the new models I've got to paint. Fun fun fun. If I ever manage 'em.

Christmas2013004_zpse49eb204.jpg

Oh, and I already posted these two pics in the "Show your display cabinet thread", but I took them intending to put them here. I can almost use my wife's craft show spinner display to open my own little mini shop! Not that I'd sell them, mind you. I just charge you to look at them. And sorry about the second fuzzy picture. It was still spinning when I took the pic and I'm too lazy to take another.

And I managed to finish a mini before the end of the year.

No, no. Not a figure. But she's a beast, I tell ya.

Battlestar Pegasus, from Moebius Models. First picture is by itself, then the second one is with the BS Galactica that I did before this thread was created. It took quite a bit of time, as I started it back in late September or early October. It wasn't difficult, I just didn't work on it. Maybe 10 hours to do it all.

For those of you (if any) wondering, it was a simplistic paint job. Silver spray covered with matte spray. Then Carnage Red for the stripe on the front and launch pods. I really should have painted the name white rather than go with the decal as it really didn't work very well on the raised letters. Oh, the Micro-Set worked its magic, but it stretched the lettering down, around and into the space surrounding everything. So it looks a little off. Would suggest trimming off just the lettering below the name (registry number) and just use that as the decal. Too easy to touch the lettering with white to fight it as much as I did. Then everything was magic-washed with Dragon Black and sealed with matte. I kept trying to do my whole gloss/matte combo but these aren't for playing with so no reason to go that route.

Was going to proudly display it in my Ikea cabinet, but the ship will only fit in there diagonally, and leaves no room for the Galactica. So above my desk they both reside now.

Two more months, and I managed to get some more painting done. Okay, okay. So I did it a week ago and just now got unlazy (had a halftime to burn) and decided to post. Simple putting in of Chestnut Brown on her hair, then splashing it also on the other four. For the good deceased captain, I plan on going over it with some gray to age the beard a bit. Maybe gray and white. Also, I was perusing the Reaper website and noticed that the "pirate with chest" now has a name... I just don't recall it.

Definately in "turtle mode" on painting, but I'm slowing getting things done!

Actually got some more paint put down, but two weeks ago actually. Video was already up, but I drug my feet on getting the pictures done. Went with a different camera this time as I'd managed to come with an idea for the web camera I use to make the videos. I had my wife hot glue two magnets to the back, so I can just reattach it to the painting rig whenever I want. Works really well sitting on a metal plate too, and easily rearranged. That had been one of my mental hurdles, "Oh, I don't want to make a video today, the camera isn't attached to the rig". Setting up now takes less than five minutes.

Anyway, pictures and vids. Noir Black. Didn't put any black on the fourth pirate member, so didn't take a picture of him.

Got a bit more done. Blackened brown and some polished silver. Used up the paint on the other crew, but don't really remember where. Hard to see the silver vs the base primer.

I've been debating what to do on the two female pirates. "Do a wash" keeps popping up over and over and over. My conscious brain keeps telling me that there's something wrong with that instinct. I believe I've hit upon why: the two have no real facial features. Which I mean to say, you can't see what their faces look like. The second pirate really shows that. Compare that to the guy carrying the chest. Just the shear fact that his features stick out further, it creates a natural shadowing which the girls don't have. So, I think I'll do a bit of shading on their faces before I resort do doing washes. It will probably make things a little better and then I can decide if I want a wash or not.

Yeah, i think you could add a lot of shadow colors as they look pretty pale for being pirates exposed to the sun all day. The guy with the chest on his shoulder has much darker features, so that is the direction i would go.

I'm now officially done with the pirates. Well, as far as I'll get with them for now. They are complete, mind you. I just have decided not to make the diorama-style base to hold all of them. Was going to make a sandy beach with a boat, but changed my mind. Ready to move on to something else.

For this last go around, the main pirate, Mariel Twinspar, was done already. I didn't do much else to her from the last go. I think the only thing I did do was give another coat of Stained Ivory to the base for the sand. Everybody else got touches and details done in either Misty Grey, Old West Rose, Scorched Metal, and Earth Brown. Did Grimeclean's beard in the grey with the brown as a wash, then did the same for the base on Finaela as I wanted it to look like old weathered wood that had turned grey. I liked the effect. Used the metallic paint for bits and bobs here and there. Think that's it, and glad to have wrapped up this bit.

Out of all of them, I think like the male pirate, Hajad, the best. Wasn't really trying on him so that's a bit odd to me.

Next project? I think I'll be doing some scratch-built sci-fi devices. Been holding on to some very interesting plastic bits for a long time, and they're currently calling to me, so figure it was time to do them. Not planning a a video series that shows every single stroke. But I'll probably record the highlights and the major milestones on them.
