Pegazus's Pile of Pminiatures (WIP)

Did a little scratchbuilding over the last month, just for fun. I've had the idea for making some sci fi devices from Clear Care's contact lens cleaning cases for years. I've painted the inside to look like an emitter of some sort, then move a little cutoff piece to the top of the outer case. No pictures, just the video. And I hope the video eventually becomes greater than 360p, as it was uploaded as HD. Think something strange is going on. That's YouTube fer ya.

I'm on to the next project finally! Really didn't know what I wanted to paint, so sat twiddling my thumbs for a bit. So I just decided to reach into my bag of Bones and randomly grab one out of the bag.

Pulled out a Well of Chaos. Really. Creeped me out a bit.

Anyway, going to break this into a multi-post. Started out with a base of Stone Grey over a completely unprimed figure. Yup, they're right. Can paint directly onto the material without primer. Still hard to see with the pure whitish, but I may try the brown liner trick next time.

Then the video to go with it.

Then went to work on a couple of the details. Went with Bright Red for the sigils. I'm thinking that once I get the well to a "playable" state, I start revisiting and detailing items. Glowing effects around the lettering, water effects in the basin, doing a good job on the shades and highlights of the face. That sort of thing.

Speaking of the face, went with a combination of Rosy Skin and Amethyst Purple. It still doesn't look nearly purple enough to me, but I think I can solve that with highlights of Amethyst and such.

Pics and the vid. And I just noticed that the first and second videos are a second apart in time. More creepiness.

Didn't post it at the time, but I have also been working on the Savannah. First paint was silver, and you wouldn't really see if very much. However, put some Green Ochre on the flight deck. I was a little surprised at how it looked, but it looks just like I'd like it to. So meh.

Did record a bit more on the Well of Chaos, but my throat is acting up and I'll be doing some heavy editing to clear all the a throat clearing. So pictures and video will probably be up sometime this year. Sorry, sorry. Corporate goal setting you see. Set the bar low and jump high. Management says that doesn't work, but I'm pretty sure it does. Anyway, rambling, so picture time.

Had a thought that I should probably add in a couple of my painted figures to the gallery. I don't think I've done that for some time, and I've got several I don't think I've posted. Just have to find the time to set up Glamor Shots ala Pegazus.

Worked up on the decorations on the back of the well with some Olive Drab. No chaotic thoughts so far.

Well, other than the normal ones.

Gonna make it quick, as I'm up way too late. Did the trim around all the sigils with Coppery Orange. Or was it Orangey Copper? Nope, Coppery Orange.

Day off, so figured I'd show this week's progress. First off, I'll do the Savannah's update. Worked on it during a virtual paint group session I did last Saturday. Or was it earlier? Can't recall and doesn't matter. Spent three hours painting the gas envelopes. THREE hours. And this wasn't just chatting, or watching other people. This was a solid session. What worries me is just how long this is going to take.

Then, I've been unhappy with the metallic silver. I maybe would have been able to make it look right in the end, but it just wasn't popping for me. So, I pulled out some Adamantine Black and went to work on a section. While it's a little dark for my tastes, I think it works better, and I can probably go back over it with some lighter metallic such as the silver to highlight up some things. So I'll be continuing this during the long weekend.

Savannah_003_zpsf9c19d3d.jpg

Did my regular painting on the Well of Chaos. Touched up some of the Olive Drab that got covered over during the trimming session last time, then put some Amethyst Purple on the tentacles. I think it looks much better than the solid block of color I had before. Course, now I want to do more breaking up, and she'll probably wind up with very little of the original flesh tone that I was trying for. During this video, I noticed that she's wearing a headband of some sort which is holding that jewel on her forehead, so that'll need painting up. I keep thinking I'm getting to a milestone of "Table Top Completed", and I probably could have ended at the trim last time and declared that. But, there's always just that little bit more I could do. Then that other little bit. Then another. I'm trying to get more detail oriented, but at some point I've got to draw the line.

Oooo.... I'm at 400+ now. I can buy a mini guilt free. Hmm... but Reaper has another Kickstarter in the works for the CAV line (stompy robots). I may hold off. And I've almost reached 100 subscribers on the YouTube channel. Don't get that many views, but I'm sure things don't appeal to everybody all the time.

Bad week for me painting. Was super motivated... on the day I couldn't. Day I could, I didn't. I hate if I have to force myself have fun.

Anyway, did the head shell thingy with Olive Drab.

Man o man. It's amazing how draining vacations can be. Took the family to Siesta Key, FL and then to Universal Studios and Walt Disney World. Walked 13.5 miles on the last day at Epcot. Draining. But the beach at Siesta Key was fabulous. Was like walking around in fine white flour. Definitely an experience I'd recommend.

I also did some mini shopping over the weekend. Picked up another Bones Fire Dragon and a pair of UCM Gladius heavy tanks from Hawk Wargames' Dropzone Commander. I'd never heard of them, but the resin casts look very clean so the desire arose. They look like futuristic tanks, so figure they'll fit in nicely with a CAV mech I'd painted a ways back.

That makes me pause. I've got some half broken tanks from an auction lot. Those might be a cool little conversion project to make them look like something futuristic as well. Ponder ponder.

The dragon is going to be painted up for a niece who wanted one at a game store during Christmas, but was turned down by her cruel and hateful father. So it's uncle to the rescue!

But on to painting. Spent eight minutes putting Olive Green dots on the well's head. Yeah.

And now for something slightly different. Went to put little rings on the tentacles, but that turned into a full on wash/glaze of the tentacles. I do like them better now, as they're a bit darker and fit better overall. They don't stand out nearly as much, that's for sure.

I think I've got one more session with this one before I wrap up the videos on it. It's not getting a lot of views compared to some of my other videos. Several of the Let's-Play YouTube people I regularly watch do this, and while I hate seeing a series I like be dropped, I can see the need.

So I believe I'll swing to something more popular while painting this and some others on the side. Luckily, Reaper lists their top ten sellers from their online store, so I'm just going to go down the list. Couple of them are paints and bases, so it's more like a top eight rather than top ten figures.

Picture and vid.

WoC_008_zps88e552c0.jpg

One of the other things I'll be doing is the Savannah mobile airfield, but I've been itching for a long time to paint my box set of Federation ships from Star Fleet: A Call To Arms from Mongoose Publishing. Space ship. Space ship. Space ship. Equals fun fun fun. Well, okay, five in this case. There's one with three engine nacelles on it, and I really don't like the look of it. So I'm planning to scratch build something that will fit on it. It's the largest of the five ships, so will be the last, and I'll have time to think about what to put there. Thinking maybe a raised platform like on Reliant. Or a large array. Time to ponder.

And I've carved out this weekend to be a painting-my-brains-out. Which probably means I'll get one or two sessions in. Life of a family man.

Normally, Tuesday is my painting recording night. But right now, my painting desk is occupied. Son is painting a hydra, and daughter is painting her plaster bobble head kitten.

Yeah, I'm okay with that. I'll do some paperwork instead.

Got the last few bits on the Well of Chaos done. Got her head piece done, touched up her "hair", and cleaned up around the figure head where the paint had crept onto the "stone". And dotted her eyes. That's probably the best set I've done in a long time. I can always get the right one easily, but the left one is always trouble. My left, not the figure's. The picture really doesn't do it justice. I've got a bunch of minis that I need to get some glamor shots done. Might do it when the kids are off to their grandparent's house for a week.

Pic and last vid!

I stopped by the hobby store today looking for the two original-29 Bones, namely the werewolf or great worm, thinking they'd be good for the next video series. Sadly the store didn't have either of them. There's another hobby store nearer, but they don't quite carry as large a selection. But I think I saw the worm there. Might stop by in the next few to check.

However, I did come away with two other Bones figures. I've got a fire dragon that I'm doing for a niece, and realized that if I'm going to give one something I painted, I should probably give the other niece and nephew something. So I picked up a unicorn for her and a spider centaur for him. He's five, maybe six, and into web based super heroes. So I got him a spider man. He'll never know the difference, right?

Plan to set up the airbrush this Friday and get all three figures well on their way with the base colors and blends. No videos on that, tho. Don't feel like trying to drag everything into a central location.

And I got a little something for myself. I was really hating that I got one set of tanks over the other from the Dropzone Commander line from Hawk Wargames, so I picked up the set I left behind last time. Oh, wait now. I needed to get up to the minimum sale in order to use a credit card.

What was the store's actual limit? Sorry, I'm a little deaf in that ear. Try to speak up next time.

I think I've created a monster. Maybe two.

My painting desk has been in constant use for four days now. I've painted less than half of those.

This is going to be a really quick WIP, mainly because I'm generally done. I've got another layer of color to put down on the base (the first is drying), and then a wash for the bases, assembly, then clear coat protection. So this entry will probably be wordy.

Last Christmas I was visiting my brother, my two nieces and a nephew. One of things I like to do is go to his FLGS (although he doesn't know it), and it's a really really nice store. Anyway, the middle niece picked out a Bone's Fire Dragon. And my brother said NO! I could have killed him! So I decided then to buy one for her and paint it up. She's under 10, so I'm trying to encourage this sort of thing.

Then I remembered that she's got a sister and a brother. Showing up with a gift for just one wouldn't be nice, so I've got to figure out two more. Thus, a unicorn for her and a spider centaur warrior for him. He's into Spider-Man, so I bought him a spider man. I'm so cute.

However, I knew from the start that I wanted to use the airbrush on the dragon for sure. Probably the unicorn, too. So I might as well do all three, right? I've used my airbrush one time before, painting three model car bodies that the kids and I were doing. So my experience is practically nil. But I've owned a "how to use an airbrush" book for over a decade, so that's almost like staying in a Holiday Inn Express. So this'll be a piece of cake!

So, pull the cars out of the garage, unbury the compressor, pull out the folding table to work from as the garage work bench is covered in other things, although I managed to clear it enough to do all my paint mixing here. That becomes important and fortuitous later.

Let's start with the dragon. Ignore the white spot for now. That's comes later in the story. Using craft paints, did its underbelly and wing membranes in a light yellowish tan, then the body in red covering up most of the yellow in the process, and then black for the spines, covering up a lot of the red. As an aside, I had the compressor up too high in pressure. Figured that out near the end of this little adventure. All in all, at least a good start. Pretty simple to clean up the over-spray areas.

NN_001_zpsb8153781.jpg

On to the centaur. Black, how can one screw up black? *raises hand* Had the paint too thin to start with, so had to let it dry and what not. But that's no biggie as I've got the dragon spines to paint. I'm telling the individual figures here in a linear sense, but I did use whatever color I had in the brush on every mini that needed it. So I'm glad I found out the paint was too thin on the spider before I destroyed the unicorn or dragon. Solved the thin paint issue, and came back to give it a better coat. Was really having trouble with too much paint (that ol' over pressure issue). So the red spots became more of a red tint. But the spider-side body came out pretty well.

Now, I've got the torso. And since I wanted to have Spider-Man's red and blue worked into him, gotta go with a Drow-ish torso. I contemplated trying to airbrush the hair black for about half a quantum of time. So he was just sprayed all in blue.

NN_003_zps4db3f42b.jpg

The unicorn was much easier. By now, I've solved the pressure issue, and have had a bit more practice and managed to get the blue really well. Purple hoof area and black mane/tail and horn. I also managed to airbrush his little goatee, but then covered it up in blue. Writing this, it certainly seems like a Quentin Tarantino-esque like story. It's all out of order here. I'm very happy with the unicorn. One of the lovely things about airbrushes is the nice fades and transitions that are possible. For my minor skill, I was happy.

NN_002_zps0f397aa6.jpg

Now here's Act Three. I'm cleaning the airbrush inside in the sink, and have it nice and clean. Back outside on the workbench, and I lay it on the side. (For those airbrush lovers, I'll have a little spoiler and tell you to fear not. It's fine.) Cleaning up the other things and I pick up the airbrush again. Inside the cup, the water has extracted more paint. This is frustrating because I've cleaned it several times already and this one color just seems to have found a place to hide. But that's not a big deal. I'll just take it apart and give it a really, really good cleaning.

I've never taken it that far. I've taken the nozzle cap off, but never the nozzle much less the needle itself. But I get that off no problem. And then the trigger comes out. Uh oh. I've now got ever single piece of the airbrush separated save for the air hose fittings. But I needed to lubricate things anyway, so this is no big deal and an opportune time to do that. Everything goes well until I try putting the trigger back in. Hinged with a little stem plug that pushes on the air hose fitting valve. I struggle to get that done.

I get it it, and reach for the other pieces. The trigger falls out and rolls under the workbench. Gigantic dust bunnies and sawdust cows (I dunno, what would you call them?) mingle with spider webs from creatures deceased for decades. I have to re-clean the trigger. This cycle repeats two more times, so my frustration level is pegging the meter right now.

In the middle of this it starts to rain. Pretty hard. It's rather welcome, as things were quite toasty, and so I don't mind. My daughter comes out to relay a question from her mother. Are the windows of the car rolled up? Of course they are, I reply. How stupid do you think I am? This is in the middle of trigger-cleaning-cycle number three. Alone again with my thoughts, I start to have my doubts. Maybe her car windows are a little cracked? I get the airbrush put together, grab the keys and run out into the pouring rain to check.

Yup. All up tight. Now I'm soaked, frustrated as I can be, and ready to clean better. But I want to put her car in the garage now. So I grab the corner of the folding table where all the figures have been drying and proceed to move it over to my car's side of the garage.

The far leg collapses. I watch in horror as my entire afternoon's work slides down the table and onto the floor with the nice abrasive epoxy coating I myself put down.

Sailors blushed.

Luckily, the damage was not as much as it could have been. Another Bones benefit, I suppose. You can see the white spot on the dragon's back leg where it scraped off. There was also another point up on his head that doesn't even show in the picture. The wings showed a few dirty streaks where they played in the tire and brake dust. The spider body had zero damage, while the torso remarkable stayed in the clamp and surfed gracefully to a stop, never touching the floor. The unicorn was like-wise safe, other than a few dirty scuffs on the body which were easily covered with a thin layer of paint.

All in all, a very adventurous day of painting. Got all the damage repaired and as I mentioned in the first of this entry, nearly done.

Thanks! I know I should practice some more before tackling some of my larger figures. Have to figure out what to practice on. Probably just a piece of scrap wood and practice lines. Tearing apart the airbrush taught me one thing. It may say dual action, but I don't think it is dual control. Press down and air comes out. I was thinking I could control the amount of air that way, while pulling back controls the amount of paint. Think I'll concentrate on the paint amount and let the pressure regulator handle the air flow.

So I've got these all wrapped up. Dragon got touch ups on all the colors, covering places that were damaged, over-sprayed, or just plain missed. Dotted the eyes with some gold metallic that I was using mostly on the unicorn. But now that I think about it, the arachnid got more.

The unicorn was much easier. Gave him red eyes with a spot of metallic gold. Sloppily brushed the gold on the horn on purpose. Kinda meh. Now it reminds me of Blucifer. That's the art work that stands out at the entrance of Denver's airport. Blue horse with actual glowing red eyes.

Arachnid warrior is my least favorite. Painted his hair black, along with the sword handle. Red on the shield to gather in more Spider-man colors, then metallic gold for the sword. Probably should have gone silver on that rather than trying to use as few paints as possible.

The dragon and arachnid then got a black wash. I was very happy with that on the dragon, but not so much on the warrior. I'm a bit sad for the warrior, as I probably needed to show him a bit more love by painting it with a bit more care and details.

The two bases were done in a craft paint brown, which surprised me that it took two layers to really color it. Okay, maybe not. I was watering that down, so maybe it isn't that surprising. Quick black wash on the bases and I called it done. They all got a good coat of gloss, followed by a coat of matte. And it really didn't cut the shine as much as I had wanted. Puzzling what happened there. I'll have to remember to not gloss my display pieces as it really isn't needed. If you're wondering, that's an old gaming-mini tip I picked up. Matte over gloss. Theory is that when the matte wears away and you can see gloss, it's time to repaint the matte. Otherwise, you'd wear the gloss away and then be wearing away color.

And now the massive dump of pictures.

First up, the dragon.

Oh that was you? Geez, I heard you all the way up here in Canada! I was mowing my lawn when a flock of birds took to the sky and I caught the end of a strange echo that sounded like UCK... UCk... Uck... uck... At least it all turned out okay.
