Pegazus's Pile of Pminiatures (WIP)

It's not really meant to be Beetlejuice eyes, but that's probably because I used straight black. I think.

Anyway! Got the blacksmith based, and plan to take a wood burner to the edge of the wooden disk. I used wooden disks very early in my painting career, and had issues where it warped the wood when I tried to paint it. Roll forward six (seven?) years, and I tried again. This time, a quick coat of regular white glue was used as a sealer to the wood first, and no issues it seems. Then some Crayola air dry clay to blend the broccoli base (which was superglued to the wood). I want to burn the wood a bit just for fun. I think it is fitting for a blacksmith. But, here's the picture prior to burning, and then a little burn around the edges in the second.

Nice stuff, bit blurry. I like the burning on the edge. Where is the mini from? It looks like a Reaper, is it?

Yeah, blurry. Still trying to solve the issue. Its a webcam and doesn't seem that great at pictures.

The blacksmith is Reaper, and is going to be done in their Bones line. Available now, but don't recall if he's part of the townsfolk pack or not.

Big update time. Got the Muddy Brown (9028) all done on the Blacksmith's base, then I went to town on the anvil with some MiG pigment in Light Rust, then on his arms, boots, apron, and the stump in Smoke. Then Scorched Grass to cover up the brown. I like how he turned out.

Then, I realized I've been uploading but not posting the videos for the Beggar to Seer conversion I'm doing. If you can call it that. Super quick thing to fill his bowl up with putty and make a flame out of him. Four videos behind already. I'll blame general weariness and not the outright laziness like I should.

I really want to get in and do some more painting, but I'm at that point where I've got too much that I want to do, so won't do any of it. Shame really.

Thanks. I was surprised at just how good the pigments made him look. The rust on the anvil isn't very noticeable in the pictures, but I think that's actually good. If I get around to making a gallery picture of it, I think it'll show up better, and that's a good thing, IMO.

Worked up a bit more tonight on the beggar/seer.

I was going to say that it's nice to be able to just put the videos up rather than the pictures, but then realized I just spent the last two hours getting things ready on the video. So, eh, that's not a faster method.

As I noted over on the other boards, props to you for making the videos. It's a lot of work to help others see exactly how you've done what you have.

And got more on the seer done. I've been rolling around in my head the idea to do more than just bones, but I can't seem to settle upon which one I'd like to do. So many choices. I should number all the minis I've currently got and have the computer randomly pick a number.

Vacation over, and no Bones shipped to me while oversea, so a blessing in that. But they should get here tomorrow! That's offered up as an explanation on why I didn't put these two videos up. They were scheduled to pop in during vacation to camouflage the vacant house, so didn't have forum access to put them in.

I was trying to find some cool models or things while in Japan. Last trip, three years ago, I bought some plastic pellets that melt in hot water and become moldable, then rigid when cooled. Since they were hot water level melting point, I thought it would be cool to make an injection molding machine that used them. Yeah, no progress on that.

This trip was a bust. Didn't find any models to speak of. Toys R Us is where my wife swears I bought a couple of mini-van models (Japanese Toyota vans look really cool), and so we went back there. Was hoping to get a truck model for my father. Entire row of models, 3/4ths Gundam and 1/4th One Piece. Oh well.

But I did manage to snag some super tiny files from the jewelry area of Tokyu Hands (awesome store if one ever finds yourself near). I think the smallest one was labeled .7, which I'm thinking is .7mm but not sure. I'm too lazy to walk up out of the basement and find them in the three suitcases right this minute to find out for sure. I'm planning to use them for those super tight areas like armpits and such. I can never get into those areas as close as I'd like.

Found out something that interests me and worries a bit. Was rearranging the mini display case, and now all three of the Bones orcs that I painted are sticky. Every one. I'm wondering if the primer is the cause on all three. Course, I guess it could be the gloss or matte coats as well, just taking time on the automotive primer to get to the sticky state.

So, I might have to start painting the bones in pure acrylics and avoid the spray can altogether.

What brand and color of primer are you using? I have thought of running some tests by spraying my different primers to the bottom of some Bones bases to see if they are all compatable.

Used a Rust-Oleum Flat Black Protective Enamel (which has some acetone which is known to not play well with the Bones), a grey Rust-Oleum Automobile Primer (sans acetone), and Dupli-Color white primer (again sans acetone). So, for the black primed figure, it was tacky right away and then crackled the base coats. Acetone I figured was the culprit.

And I just realized that the clear spray might have something in it. Figured it is the cheap ColorPlace (aka Wal-Mart) glossy clear. Maybe some of the stuff... couldn't really tell.

Then there's the Krylon Matte Finish (1311). It's 40% acetone. WARNING WARNING WARNING!!! Damn. I think the acetone from the matte soaked through to the PVCish, and made the whole figure tacky. That would explain why all three are that way now.

All I can say is thank goodness I haven't painting anything precious yet! My word, can you imagine Kaladrax being all sticky like that?! He'd grow FUR from all the dust that would collect on him. Sheesh!

But, this is more good news. I know now that my white and grey spray primers are still safe. The gloss is safe. It's that matte that tainted things. I just need to find a replacement.

Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! Stop! That is the stuff I used to use. They changed their recipe and there is no telling how it will spray. It has seriously inconsistent frosting issues now. :(

Advice taken, Zab. This is a troubling situation. I'm really not a lover of brush on sealer, but I see little in the way of suitable sprays. Might have to risk the frosting (maybe checking on a test piece first).

Gah. Really don't want to brush on, but don't want to give up spraying. Suppose I could always airbrush the bottled stuff. Or just contract out for some acetone free clear.

Have you tried using any of the brush on/airbrush primers? Or the Liquitex brand of varnishes? Thanks for such a comprehensive list btw :)

I switch to vallejo a few months back after krylon betrayed me. I have not complaints and it both brushed on and spray through the AB nicely, but I do realize it isn't the most accessible brand. I hear good things about AK interavtice and testors dullcoat too.

Haven't touched bottled sealer at all. Too cconvenient to do the rattle can route. I can see pulling the airbrush out for a large figure such as the dragons, but for little figures it doesn't feel time efficient. Suppose I could gloss them all first, then when I spray the clear do them as a group. And maybe brushing the small ones when I can't wait.

Took the day off, really just to paint. Didn't get a whole lot done, but that was nearly the plan. I did finish the beggar finally, although I probably ruined it quite a bit. I think I was trying to do OSL with yellow over purple. Yeah, yeah, that's gonna look REAL nice, and really just poor planning on my part. Then I think I got things too thin as it got powdery and had really bad tide marks. That second one was more indicative of too much paint on the brush. But no reason to start over on him since I've got all those Reaper Bones propping up a minis pile just as large, so I'll carry on to the next set of minis.

Which, I've decided are going to be the pirates from the Kickstarter. I've been racking my brain trying to decide what to paint first, as there's so much to actually choose from. And it occurred to me that I've never painted any pirate figures, so that was as good a reason as anything. Not sure if I'm going to do it by video or not. I may pick something else to do for YouTube. But you should have seen my panic when I couldn't find my spreadsheet where I labeled everything that I got in the Vampire package. It consisted of 200 minis spread over six bags, in no particular arrangement. Had zombies and heroes in the same bag, for example. Now, I'd gone through and written down what mini was in which bag and that's what I couldn't find. Finally found it, and then was vexed by the unlabeled bags of minis inside the large bag.

Broke down and labeled each mini as I searched through D Bag to get the pirates... which I just realized one of the group of five is in another bag, F. Oh, and those are just my names for them. There's nothing on the outside of any of them to tell which is which.

I've still got those Bombshell Babes I can paint too. Or the Star Trek ships. Or that Battlestar Pegasus. Oh, and the kids' model cars that we're doing together, er, from last summer. Sheesh. So much to pick from. I need to hire a personal minis assistant to coordinate what I paint next.

Anyway, video time:

Far too long. Far too long. Itching to paint... well, itches. Started in on some pirates! Arrr.

Nothing really special. Bones figures, primed grey, then a couple different skin tones. Girls are light, shirtless guy will be tanned, and the dwarf in betweens. Painting one on video (link at the end) but the other three are for my own enjoyment.

Son got super fascinated with pirates, actually after I decided to paint these. He watched Pirates of the Caribbean. Then another. Then the third and fourth. And he's now re-imagining the entire series using stuffed animals, "Plushies of the Caribbean". Oy vey.

So, last night he had a birthday party far from home, which meant no reason to drive all the way back home, especially with a FLGS/Hobby shop just right around the corner from laser tag. And I succumbed to his affliction and bought him a pirate ship model kit and some "zombie pirate" figures from Mars Figures. Uh, yeah, "zombie pirates". Sure, they just happen to look like certain characters from a certain Disney film that may contain ship-borne robber-like-occupation type individuals. Uh huh.

And of course, can't leave without buying myself something. So picked up another Dystopian Wars model. This time, an Empire of the Blazing Sun's Kiyohime Class Assault Carrier. That itch I talked about before? Oh, I want to paint one of the other two that I bought a while back so much. Time is not my friend right now.

Anyway, pics and then a vid.
