Retail Therapy: Post some new minis

I had the week from hell and it culminated in a serious database issue that I had to deal with in the middle of month end accounting - what a Friday! I usually hit 42 hours at noon but this time I was there until 4. I was tired and couldn't think straight. I have to admit being bummed that most of my friends are at GD in Chicago and I wasn't able to go - that's downright depressing because I would love to see some awesome paint jobs right now.

So I decided I deserved a retail therapy. I shouldn't have but I did. At least my shopping list didn't involve shoes or clothes. ;)

I found these on sale for a great price and they were the last ones so I had to nab them.

Of course I had to get the new Scribor Archangel.

I remember seeing this mini on a thread here a couple of years ago. It intrigued me then and still does, so because of that I picked it up too. ;)

The fact I actually bought this one is almost scary but it is downright unique and the horse seems relatively well done for the strange pose. It kinda reminds me of the way I feel right now after this week. lol!

I'm probably going to hate myself for getting this eagle when I'm trying to assemble it. lol! I'll be claiming temporary insanity.

And this one is my favorite! I've got some metallic and gem work planned for him!!!!

I know when folks return from GD they are going to be showing off the minis they picked up there and the photos of all the cool stuff they got to see. Let's start our own thread. What minis have you purchased lately?

Not so much minis, but because Dullcote is so hard to get in Oz, I splashed out and ordered 40 cans, plus courier costs. That's not a typo.

Holy crap gohkm! lol! That's enough to seal a couple of real life horses! How long do you think it will last you? I have to order some more too, fortunately it's far easier to get. But I only order about 12-15 cans at a time and I'm the one who seals each layer with my pigments. lol!

Now if only my Tamiya primer would return. I'm getting low on my reserves with that stuff. The Duplicolor and Vallejo primers work pretty well but I use those for larger projects and save the Tamiya for the minis.

I hope the courier costs weren't equal or more to the Dullcote costs.

I'm hoping that will last a year or so. Apparently, the stores only get one shipment a year, or at least, HobbyCo does. They are one shoddy store, despite being the biggest hobby store in Sydney. Courier was expensive, largely cause you need a specialized courier in a reinforced truck to deliver it (no, really!).

But hey, my missus just came out of surgery, so I'm not leaving her side for a while.

I know at least 5 model horse artists in the Sydney area who are competing with you for that dullcote. Although, I think a couple of them are trying the Tamiya clear sprays since you guys can get that but we can't.

Best of luck to both you and the missus! I hope she's feeling better soon!

Thanks. It was only a minor procedure, but the doc said to rest up for at least 48 hours, so I've effectively confined her :).

It's too late for those horse artists :) - signed, sealed, paid, and delivered to my doorstep on Tues. Expensive, but worth it. A year's worth of Dullcote in my evil paws - MUAH HA HA HA HA!!!

Ahem, sorry, got carried away there ...

It is Downright Unique!
I bough it a Year or so ago because of the fantastic pose of the horse. A couple of issues with mine. It needed some serious greenstuff work on the horse halves filling in the gap.
Otherwise the finish on the horse was excellent, detail good and crisp enough to be used as a competition piece (didn't get anywhere).
Hope you don't mind if I show you mine.

It demanded a simple base for the story telling and that was the third attempt.

Not at all! That's a fantastic piece DR. I love it! It's a shame it didn't go anywhere as a competition piece because your vignette is really cool.

I was wondering about the assembly tho - it does look like an awkward piece to cast so it doesn't surprise me that it has issues. The only thing that really worries me is that left hind leg, the cannon bone, between the hoof and hock. It looks kinda wonky. It's supposed to be nice and straight, not zig zag, but I can't tell for certain with the pics I've seen. That type of repair would be a job and a half with a metal mini.

lol! You're brilliant, DR! You just gave me an idea to come at it from the other direction. Remember in the movie, Gladiator, at the very beginning? I'm going to call mine, "They say; No."

I just need to figure out exactly how to do the scene.

Funny you should bring this topic up! I just received in the mail yesterday a High Elf Prince and Noble box( the plastic is a much darker gray than it used to be), A Demon Prince( normal, lighter gray) and a finecast Grimgor. I also have on the way a couple of Reaper minis to play around with. The Fire Demon guy and a half Ogre guy. Should have me covered for a while!
Really nice choices Kath! And great job on yours as well DR! Love the whole scene!

Well photos might be a long stretch but in the span of a week vie bought for infinity the aleph rebots, dasyus, marut, for hajislam the female hassasin, for ariadna a grenade launcher bloke. From war machine epic vlad and some demolition corps. A GW plastic dark elf sorceress. The last one technically involves miniatures as I bought the fantasy flight hours heresy board game.

Heya freak! I thought the archangel was new - or did you just get them? How's the hasselfree ones going?

Thanks armor! Wow you should be busy for awhile! Let us know when you decide to come up for air. lol!

Just bought me one of these fellows as a Finecast. 26 bucks!! Not a bad casting, nothing to get all worked up about though.

Hi Shawn, yeah, that's definitely pretty cool. I bet he'll look great when you get some paint on him.

lol! Retail therapy is retail therapy after all. ;)

Not touching that one with a 10 ft pole. ;) So onto the minis. I really like your grand master, jah. The freehand on him is fantastic! Very nicely done!

hey Kathryn...

glad you like the Grand Master...
the freehand was fun...
i really love the Greek style patterns, almost as much as Celtic...

i'm very happy that i've been hired to do a redux of this conversion, especially as a character like Drago...
i wasn't quite happy with the lack of Grey Knight detail on the first guy, but now with the plastics, and a great sculpt that i can make press-moulds from, the next version should be even cooler...
i'm not looking forward to copying Razza's great freehand though, especially the script on the cloak: http://www.coolminiornot.com/280038
this is gonna test my skills to the limit...

looks like you made some good purchases...
i have The Venerable Whatshisname, along with a few other Gamezone minis, but haven't had a chance to paint any yet...
they have great detail, but go together poorly...

is that eagle in metal???
would be cool in resin, but not much good on a gaming base in metal...
looks like it would tip over if you just glance at it...

have fun with your new toys:)...

cheers

That's an excellent point to remember Greek has some fine patterns to use in freehand. I don't have to be stuck on Celtic all the time. I'm just starting to delve back into freehand. Re-learning to paint with hand tremors is certainly challenging. The Greek patterns may come in handy for me, thanks for mentioning it!

Holy cow! I believe that! Look at those teeny tiny eagles in the corners of his surcoat. And the script is on the inside of the cloak, of course. Are you going to start a WIP thread on him? I'd love to see how he progresses.

Thanks! Yeah, the eagle is 28mm metal. I'll probably have to CM a base for him. Like I said, I have a feeling I'll be claiming temporary insanity when I try to put it together. lol! I had heard Gamezone has problems with gaps. I'm working on the Chaos Knight released by CMON and the sculpt is very similar to Gamezone minis - some folks I spoke with think the sculptor may work for them. My Chaos dude had problems enough during assembly, that was certain. But I have enough Apoxie and GS to build a small car if I wanted to, lol! So I'll be ready even if I have to use a spatula! ;)

Cheers!

I got the Artemis from Hasslefree, the 2005 Christmas Sophie from Reaper, and Virinia from Reaper as well. I actually managed to leave Games Day without buying anything. Of course that's partly because the Forge World was 2 hours long, and partly because the one mini I really wanted hasn't been released yet.
