the needles we use come with a protective sheath covering the sharp part, its made from some kind of rubber tubing and is about 1.5-2mm thick.

i couldnt find any good pics on what i have at home but i found this, its the same stuff just shorter, i can get everything from 45mm-150mm in length though.

and the sharp end is covered in that rubber sheathing.

on a related note, when working with tools that are this sharp always wear gloves, sounds insane i know but the gloves may actually protect you from getting some wierd substance infecting you in case of a cut.

and also you shouldnt use latex gloves at all, they may make you alergic towards latex wich really isnt all that fun. use vinyl or nitrile instead.

Blob of putty on the sharp end and they should work well.

Here are the ones I use. I clip the sharp end off and pull the needle out of the plastic housing and reverse it so the non clipped end is inside. Putty in the plastic \"handle\" and Bobs yer mothers brother.

klute: what really should work though is an introcan needle, its got a plastic sheathing covering the entire length of the needle and the needle is retractable to just give you the plastics.

what does he mean by this:

\"It should be multi-part for ease of casting, and you need to allow for the reduction in dimensions that will follow from being moulded, especially where any joins are.\"

surely to accuately allow for shrinkage, we woukld need to know how much its will compress and in which directions. sorry if this seems stupid but i am not entirely familiar with sculpting with the intention to cast

This is about the Heresy competition right? Andy explains a bit more about it here. You have to keep in mind a possible 10-20% size loss in the direction perpendicular to the mould plane.

To help you understand this:
Here you see some details on moulds are made. Moulds are compressed and heated when vulcanising them and are compresed again when they are used for casting. Both of these actions can create a size difference from the master.
If I remember right, after a mould is taken from the vulcanizer and the masters are removed the rubber will still settle itself somewhat which can cause distortion. Also, the pressure of clamping moulds together for casting can cause this and this become worse the warmer the rubber becomes (it also becomes softer). Most distortion will appear in the direction in line with the pressure, so perpendicular to the mould face.

Right, I\'m a complete noob at sculpting but have been itching to try it for a while. I decided to start on just a head and shoulders bust for my first attempt. Maybe try a full figure later, depending on how this goes :D

This is what I have so far. It needs loads of work yet (and some ears lol) but I have the basis of what I\'m trying to achieve...

I\'m using fimo - which I both like and dislike (bloody crumbly as hell)

I think I may remove the nose and re-sculpt or at least do a ton more work.

Any tips, suggestions, crits etc. would be quite useful :D

Cheers!

@Beelzebrush : Overall, it\'s a pretty good start IMHO :). The eyes are spot on. The cheeks could use a bit more meat. His left nostril could be closer to the center. Also, you should define the teeth a bit more. What did you use to do the taste buds? I\'m using a toothbrush. Finally, I think you should run a shaper on the hair to smooth it out a bit and make it sharper.

Cheers GS!

Yeah, there\'s a few things that need sorting... the nose being the main one I think. I\'m going to add more layers to the hair yet I think. What do you mean by a \'shaper\'... at the moment, I just have the crappy GW tool and a few sharp pointy things like a needle and the end of a paintbrush.

I\'m also going to add some more creases of skin to the face - around the cheeks.

For the body, I was thinking of a straight jacket perhaps... not too sure yet :)

Same from me.
Left nostril in a bit and more definition on the hair.
Its a great start though and a good choice too. Doing something larger scale will give you a feel for the putty and tools before you move onto the small stuff.

Love the bulging eye. Looks like it would be fun to paint.

EDIT
Straightjacket.:flip:

The rubber end is soft enough to smooth surfaces but still keap the main details. I use them in the last phases for things like faces, smooth armor, cloth, ...

This place is good for needles ->

www.wildcat.co.uk

You can buy individual needles with free p&p. I use them for piercing and for sculpting/modelling projects.

yeah wildcat makes and sells some pretty good needles for sculpting. but i cant use them at work sadly since they are cheaper than my supplier.

bump!

heres a couple of things i have been working on:
eeeeviiil clown inspired by the carnival of the bizarre from this very thread:

import052.jpg

and eeeeeviiiil little girl inspired by the ring. the bit between her legs is there to hold her up - she is going to be floating. originally it was going to be cable like some kind of servitor but i didn\'t like that. just seen the photo- she looks better in real life!

Looks good Tim, I particularly like the clown. There\'s just something about evil clowns.. Btw am I the only one who found the \"ring\" movies overrated? They weren\'t all that scary IMO, the japanese version even less so than the american. And it\'s not because I watched them in the middle of the day or something like that (I was, quite to the contrary, alone in a dark room and it was about 3am :) )

Anyway, my Karl Franz sculpt is pretty much finished now:

Time to move over to the painting-WIP thread soon I suppose :)
