Ahhhh yes yes brother Larry .. I mean big brother Larry ;) that’s the first rule of competing - pick something that is somewhat diff/ that’s the reason people convert their models. Second rule paint to a certain standard- 3rd rule - pray like a bishop that nobody else shows up- a win by default is still a win ;) lolololol

Thanks CC. Yeah I’m hoping to make the finals on all three. It’s so many Europeans there that are easy way above the norm of expert levels that I’ve learned to stay humble and expect things within reason. I’ve won enough to where my confident in my painting is high but keep things in perspective. It’s like van goh going up against Michelangelo’s sisteen chapel chapel works!!! Both pro artists one just waaay above the other. No surprises there. ;) but hey it’s feel even more amazing when I’m sitting there at the awards ceremony and they call my name. One never knows. But thanks much matey.

LMAO! I mean that sucks but LMAO!!!! Im picturing you looking around the corner to make sure Janet is not around and "accidently" dropping it on the floor and saying OH NO! in your most sarcastic voice ever and still looking around the corner kick Prox over to Sammy. Oh the horror. Guess you can't do that one now. Better get something else. Hahaha.

You know, if you really want to be sure a figure is 'taken care of', you might want to smear a bit of peanut butter on it before you accidentally knock it onto the floor. You can never be too careful. =P

The new stuff all looks great. I hope you're really happy with how the vampire turned out, he looks awesome! Just tossing out some ideas here... the white spots on the base got me thinking. What if, when it's all done, you put some drops of blood on the base? Could do a bit of blood running down the side or some blood splatter. I wouldn't go crazy with it, but just a bit of red. I'm thinking of some of the bases Roman has done where it looks like paint or whatever has spilled off of the figure and onto the base. Take a look at these to see what I mean...

It's a bit unusual, so only do it if you really feel it.

PS. Seriously, CMON, take the spam filter down a notch. I try to share a whole three links in a post, so it must be spam. Fine... remove links, post, edit post, reinsert links. But still, it's a pain in the butt.

Damn, dude, that's some impressive ammunition you're packing this year. Best to take a wheelbarrow with you to ferry all those medals back home. :D

Here again you can see frasers signature eye on his banners, shields and other things. I’m not the best illustrator, but I have a innate skill for copying things. So I encourage that trait and evolve it. ATM I can paint eyes, evil suns, bad moons and a few others. I basically start something and use it till I put it in my close enough to look like a decent freehand. The eyes for example. So at this point if I’m going to do a freehand and go up against an insane standard it better have close to. I mistakes , be sharp and readable. Here is where I rely on the images I’ve chose to learn simply because I like them. So that’s what I would do for a painting comp.View attachment 63590

Damn sproket been in the game for ages lol, I love that old style of painting with the vibrant colours

Yep I started that way as the time went by I started to fall in love with models like historical and other things that had dirt, and grime.i started to see that the less saturated and vibrant the colors the better it showed up the effects of dirt and stuff . At least in my eyes it did. S I stuck with it. But it goes to show how if you like something nurture it. If something’s is making one not a fan of their own minis and the style their using , don’t settle. That’s where painting 100s of model in ones hands will start to evolve the paintwork. ;)
now if somebody like a bunch of styles than TRY TO COPY ALL OF THEM IN DIFF MINIS. Let’s face it some models favouring one style look better than using another. So use each for diff. This style what I call in Italian “la giambotta “ meaning everything, is tough to get proficient st for the average painter. However think about it, when going to a comp where you know the judges are a big fan of one over another than you have the creative liberty to do so and get some extra points . I thing about compeyeting quite a lot and I’m a big FAN of bringing other factors ,that influence the judges , into the equation.;)

For me I'm in this weird position where I'd like to be at a competition level of painting but I'm not all that competitive in general, I've talked a bit in my thread about my son who has some difficulties in life (suspected autism plus an unknown genetic disorder) which means I'm unlikely to be able to go to any sort of competition in person anyway for at least the next 5-10 years. I like seeing the realistic style but I can't say I set out to choose the style I ended up painting, just started improving and painting how I liked and ended up with a more comic style but I'm fine with that, here in Britain it rains alot which makes real life colours desaturated so I enjoy making colourful pieces, it's become an escape for me. Who knows maybe in the future I'll switch to a more realistic style but for now I'm sticking with what I know haha (probably also influenced by the early 90s when I first took the hobby up as a kid)
