Nice work! Just get a decent entry level SLR that you can use on vacation too and the money won't feel wasted. Also, get a lens filter cause most lenses are not under warranty and are just as expensive to replace as to repair and the lens filter is like $30 so it's not an up sell when they recommend it :) Just replaced my filter after 6 years and it was pretty dinged - and I thought I was very OCD with it o_O Guess it saved me replacing a $250 standard 18-55mm lens!

Dark Sword had some of their recent Tony DiTerlizzi stuff available at GenCon, so I picked up a couple minis from the line. This one's my favorite.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure about the Vallejo paints I've been testing out. Gorgeous colors, but they seem to go on weirdly grainy. I so wanted to love these paints :(

Vallejo is hit and miss with their stuff. Great job so far :) You'll be cursing a blue streak when you get an SLR and begin to figure out what works and what doesn't for shooting minis. Marco mode? Surprisingly useless o_O

Neat figure. Which Vallejo paints are you having issues with? And are they Model Color or Model Air (or one of the game ones?).

Yeah, definitely don't use macro mode for shooting miniatures. I actually do all my photos as if they were portraits. I move farther away from the figures and zoom all the way in. MassiveVoodoo had a nice two part photo tutorial which may be worth a read if you haven't already.

Bailey, they're Model Color. They're inconsistent--the grays aren't so grainy, but they're so shiny that I had to hit the breastplate with matte sealant just to see if my blending was okay. The browns are fine, but the greens seem to be the worst texture-wise, and I use a lot of green.

Yeah, I moved away from Vallejo Model Color a few years ago. I had the same issue, some colors were fine and others would have a satin finish or consistency issues. Overall a good brand but not perfect. I started to fill the holes with other paints and eventually just switched over entirely. I would expect the Vallejo Model Air to be less grainy, though I've only played around with their metallics.

I forget, did you end up getting any of the Scale75 paint at Adepticon (or any other place)? I'm pretty sure 10 ball used their green set on his latest orc. And Sproket mentioned using that set on his nurgle project too. So it might be worth checking out. Here's a link to their US site

FYI because of Gencon they've offering a 15% discount all of August. Now that I see that, I may order some more too.

Ooooh, thanks for letting me know! That might have to happen, I haven't tried their paints before but I very much want to.

I painted over the cloth, still needs some work but it's already looking smoother to my eyes. You can see the very first steps of NMM on her legs, and the chainmail...I will figure out somehow! I think it's going to involve going in and dot-highlighting wherever the light would hit.





I have plans for a pattern on her cloak and a rose (or maybe a pair of antlers? Don't want to get too Baratheon-y) on her shield, but it'll have to wait. Magically, the brushes I've been using since November decided to fray all to hell right after I got back from GenCon (though really, I'm grateful they lasted that long). Just a week 'til new ones get here, says Amazon. Just a week. I can last a week. Yeah.

Oohhh yeah. It's my weakness, I always gravitate towards it. Teal-green, red-purple.

Long time no post. Tara's still on the table, but once my brushes came in, I was itching to start on Shardra, who I picked up at GenCon:

Her Iconic character is the first (far as I'm aware) trans character in miniatures, which is really cool (and her backstory's nifty), and she's also just a really neat mini.

Nice start, great job on her lizard and look at the texture on that cloak... now what the hell are you gonna do with that? Curious to see :)
