Please tell me that rat on the banner is a printed drawing from the skaven book. If not you have just distorted some boundaries of reality.

I'm betting Skelly has a poulty-sacrificing production line in his backyard to please the gods.

Looking cool dude very nice deep contrast there I particularly like the bell great depth to the picture. Great seeing you look forward to what your going to do with this skaven piece. By the way I found the ratmen warp fire thrower team and plague globe thrower. Will post em over if you like they are good but proper old school.

Hi Skel,

just amazing, breathtaking, awesome, not believable... I am missing any words do describe how wonderful this freehand is... It is just great how you manage this well fitting colouring and those smooth transitions between shadows and highlights, always to the point, in 3D-mini as well as in 2D-freehand :worship!:
Perhaps some day I'll have the possibility to admire one of your minis in real world.

Do you participate in the competition, if so, with which mini? Anyway - wishing you all the best, in case of :)

(BTW: How do you manage to keep up painting and modeling altogether with your family...?? Or have you given up to sleep at night... ;))

thanks friends :)

DunE; yeah im entering the competition, not really sure with what minis yet but probably the Rhinotaurus and Nurgle Toadrider. perhaps something more.
yeah i have partly given up sleep that is true, but now jr head to bed much earlier than he used to (kindergarten taken its toll hehee) so littlebit more time. 4-5hrs sleep/night is pretty fun in the long run though, but what you gonna do...

and the years of practice to achieve that level of steady hand-syndrome, color sense, personal style and planning ability=) having seen stefan paint a few times, i can still never tell what paint goes on next. to achieve a even grey color with some sub tones, he goes through the weirdest palette of blue, bright green, reds, dark greens, pinks, browns, smoke, purple etc etc. anything but orange tbh.

Yes, an artist like him must have a number of attributes that set them apart. Ya fun to watch his work.

Congrats Skellettet on your numerous victories. Shoulda placed first!!!

In response to 70-80 layers being painted to achieve Skelettet's Godliness, I'm sure this is true. While I apply a lot, it's not that many. And I probably don't use as many mid tones or in between tones as I should. While I mostly glaze layer, I also will inevitably wet blend and feather. This isn't planned, it just happens this way.

But I must ask, when doing a freehand like the above banner, surely you don't glaze as much as normal. Some of your bolder lines must be done with less dilute paint, yes? I'm just trying to imagine how I would ever glaze a freehand like this with so many details and it just seems insurmountable. It has to work somewhat like drawing a picture would...at least I hope so : )

Our jr goes to the kindergarten as well. But even though he doesn't alyways take a "power nap" around noon any more since a couple of weeks, he is still (or again? *lol*) so awake in the evening, that it is between 8:30 and 9 pm until he sleeps finally. Every second day, it's my turn to bring him to bed, and in some cases, it happens to me that I fall asleep beside him. Or at least, I am getting so comfortable then, that it becomes a bit difficult to pull myself together and start to paint during the last hour of the day ;)

Perhaps I should try your strategy and teach myself to manage with only 5 hours sleep ;)

no, the paint is not that heavily diluted when freehanding. i guess the consistency of the paints comes with experience. to watery and everything just floats or noting happens, too thick and you got a physical trace of the paint that isnt that great after a few layers. some of the things are glazed a lot though, like on the green flames and the "background".

you know that sounds exactly like home :) i turn him to bed every second day, and its bloody easy to fall asleep and get "robbed" of the evening. i do force myself to paint when i finally get the time, even if i many times rather slack in front of the TV. when i take up the brush i usually get energy ;)

That makes sense, thanks Skel. I think I have found the sweet spot for this. Now all I have to do is be creative and artistic. :p

How do you make your banners? Specifically, the cloth part? I thought about making a bunch of tattered banners out of GS and practicing my freehand.

its made of milliput. its great for making really worn pieces, just mess it up a bit on the edges. the benefit with milliput is that you can sand the surface and get it reeeeeally smooth.

Your banners illistrate the fact that you are a true artist while i am a kindergadner throwing paint on toy soldiers. Beutiful work Skel.

And five hours sleep...i would go ballistic after a few days. Your dedication is inspiring.

Yeah, Skel makes a lot of us feel like we're back in our fingerpainting days. Really great looking banner! Good luck at the show this weekend!
