So uh...,how we looking on that leather tute?
At the moment it's looking like it will be a close thing as to what arrives first - the leather tutorial or Santa!

Right on. I am about to paint a bit of leather up and will use the stippling technique, of course. But am not sure which way to proceed: was either going to base it with VMC Orange-brown and then stipple on a bestial brown, then follow that up with some scorched brown/Rhinox hide in darker spots.
OR
Basecoat it with a commando khaki type tan color then shade the same way as above. Of course highlifjt both by adding ivory to the base. Any thoughts on this? Having trouble finding an appropriate starting place.

Perhaps Santa with a leather tutorial, that is a Santa in red leather
I'm not sure this is the appropriate place for that tutorial! There are probably more 'specialist' forums for that sort of thing.

I started off fairly desaturated with a Baneblade Brown base. I stippled & sponged over that with a darker tone and then mixed a little ivory with the Baneblade for some stippled highlights. It was all very rough at this stage but I applied a wash of scale colour chestnut ink to warm up the colour and tie all the texture together. I then went back over with the Baneblade & Ivory and refined the details & texture. The final step was to add a few carefully applied glazes to enrich the colour and tie all the details together.
The chestnut ink was crucial to the success of the finished effect. It's a simple step but it transformed everything like magic!

I've started a new project to work on over the Christmas /New Year holiday although I'm sure it'll take longer than that. Spent a few hours on it so far and made a good start but there is a lot of refining to do. I wasn't a fan of the small spikey crest on his helmet so I've gone for something a little more OTT.

This is excellent david...please tell me who puts this out .the biggest compliment I could give somebody is I would love to try and painting this up myself that's how inspiring this face is thus far.AND it's not even done yet.

Fantastic work, Sproket. Great colors on the face. I'm very interested to see what you do with the armor. And thanks for the summary of your leather technique. I might have to try that on one of my current projects.
BAM, I know you were asking Sproket... but since my name is David too, I figure I can answer just as well. The bust is from Hera Models. There's a version with and without the helmet. I believe the one with the helmet is limited edition, so if you want one, don't wait too long!
