Tell me one good thing about the UK today...

Our electricity bills and gas bills have gone up, council tax is up, Water Rates are up. TV licenses went up recently. Interest rates are on the up, house prices are huge...

What is good about the UK anymore? I can\'t see myself as part of the UK these days anyway, but what redeeming features are there?

I love the idea of a multicultural/cosmopolitan Isle, but what the fuck esle have we got?

New Labour has done far more to screw us than even the tories did (scary thought). What are we these days? I have a huge love of our diversity in a small space, especially how we can go from town to town and see immediate differences, but when is the last itme you could say you truly felt \'British\'? I know it\'s different from the UK, but the idea carries through. Anyone else feel that \'British\' is a tainted term? I want to be separate from the term, and yet my Grandfather fought under the banner for our freedom. It\'s a horrible situation. I\'m glad to see the separate parts of our isles become more comfortable with their badges and flags (particularly England having thrown off the negative connotations of the BNP, etc) but I also want to be part of something bigger than just Wales. I want to know that there\'s something special about these old isles again, to know our history properly and stand alongside other European countries with a real sense of purpose. I also want to see an end to the homogenisation of our lovely isles. Anyone get what I mean?

That\'s everything that\'s wrong with us! Newspapers don\'t educate, they just throw celebrity at us (tabloids anyway). Shocking. We\'ve gone down the pan :(

if the uk was classified as a business it would be put into liquidation.
politicians can\'t run anything anymore. i think any politician should have had to run there own business for several years before being allowed to take a seat.

they would understand the real meaning of money then, and not fritter it away on pointless crap and then demand more from us.

It\'s like the proverbial rat\'s fleeing a sinking ship.. An interesting fact is that one industry booming at the moment is the overseas property market....
The whole country is getting more and more screwed...
My City Leeds was recently voted the friendliest place in the uk...If that\'s true then we really are F:cussing:Ked.

Good things....mmmm.....mmmm..mmmmm...mmmmmmmm......mmmmmmm.....mmmmmm......No Volcanoes........

That\'s about all I can come up with.....At the end of the day our nations favourite dish is tandoori chicken massala...says a boatload really.......

But hey I was born in Cairns Oz..so no real big worries there....Although I am looking at emmigrating back over as I now have an 18month old son and really don\'t want him to experience a lot of the misery we have to come..

How bout some of the most welcoming folks I have met in my travels about the globe?

Even the customs agents in Heathrow - honestly. Outside the US, British Customs has been the best one I\'ve been through - course that was in 05. Especially when compaired to some of the other Customs Agents I\'ve dealt with.

Well Rev your question doesn\'t end there. The other week I read an article about how Brussels (bloody sprouts) and the EU want to split the whole of Britain and segragate us into four different states, Wales will be joined with Ireland and become the western state or something like that if I recall.

Why does everything have to change??? Why can some things not be left alone???

I like our independance I don\'t want to be broken up by some other country to be just a state in a super power. Look what happened to the countries that were absorbed by Russia after WWII they were raped of any worth to feed the state and left in a right mess which we are now footing the bill for as more and more of them join the EU.

And don\'t even get me started on imigration...We take in any and everything whilst other countries keep their OPEN BOARDERS closed to new EU States/Countries.

I am not a racist or what ever else you are thinking of calling me but I have seen it all to often whereby this sort of change is not for the better and does more harm, as we grow old and those that have died for their country do not, we seem to forget all that has gone before and a lot of our history is nolonger taught to children for one reason or another and people wonder why the children of today have no pride in their country other than excuse for a punch up at a football match.

I have to admit emergration is something I have thought of but where to go???
I have several options for places I would like to go back to but at the end of the day are they any better than what you have here??? Most have simular problems to the UK in the way of inflation etc.

As they say the grass is not always greener on the other side :D

Tea, crumpets, cricket on the village green, antiques roadshow, cucumber sandwiches... there are so many reasons to rejoice in our Britishness. Warm beer, the BBC, the friendly relationship between the Scots and the English (especially during the World Cup), Colmans mustard... Come fellow Brits, stand up and be proud of who you are and where you\'re from :beer: :beer: :drunk:

I also want to see some sort of unification of the British Isles, I think it\'s madness that it still hasn\'t happened yet, it\'s like we\'re still a group of backward thinking warring princedoms or something.

One good thing about living here is that we are free to ignore lots of the bad things you mentioned, our culture is diversse enough to have something for everyone. There\'s no getting away from the rising bills though, which is also getting on my tits.

One good thing I really love about England is the music our residents produce. I was talking to a froend about this on Friday night, we came to the conclusion that part of it is because we have the best language, full of synonims etc. I think we have 3x as many words as the French. I suppose that\'s how AMerica produces some good music too, though they should really make a lot more considering their size. I think they just get stuck in cycles (rock music for the 1900s, and it looks like it will be chepa and cheesy \"R\'n\'B\" until the end of civilisation).

Well, I can see how it\'s easy to think about how crap & expensive is in this country, but you should put it in context...

Theres no war, terrorism, although worrisom is more scaremongering by the people that want you to live in fear - like the government. And yes, although Tony has lost the plot, im pretty sure he\'d be no better or worse than any of his rivals. Jeremy Paxman in his book \'The political animal\' demonstrates that the reason as to why politicians make things worse, is that we now have \'proffesional politicians\'. In the mid 20th century, politicians were ususally landed gentry, business men, or people otherwise with a main career outside of politics. As such they required skills and a working knowledge of thier respective industries, rather than say courses in body language or spin...WTF does a public school boy, majoring in \'Politics\' know about an economy, or health service? so why on earth put him in charge? Dumb aint it? :eek:

so it\'s no wonder that things are always going wrong in the press. But for me, in context - I live in a lovely new village, OK i\'m mortagegd up to my eyeballs, but what most 30 something with families arent?. I went to the worst Comprehensive school in my city, and still managed to come through with a 2:1 degree at the end of my academic career. I have never been beat up. I dont feel scared walking late at night, and I dont lock my doors.

The UK is changing. We have lost our manufactring industry, but gained a service one. we have the national health, which although unloved is one of the best things politicians DID do..

I am a proud Englishmen, and I am British! Culturaly, we must stand near the top, if not at the top, for our sense of history, pride, and achievement - Science and the arts both (Ahem, ok you can exclude sport :D) stand at the for front of world development!.

I can trace my ancestors as far back as the 16th century, and still visit all the places that lead me and my family to where we are today.

All in all, Britain is a wonderful place. pubs are wonderful places, not bars, or Cafe\'s - but pubs!! I wouldnt live anywhere else. :D

I think the British have lost the plot in general, it\'s too money orientated now, I would be so happy pottering in my own garden growing vegatables, saying good morning to passers by, and generally being the hobbit like people we were, and still are under the surface. It is up to us to show others the true British values, and not be pulled down into this capitalistic, jealous of others money driven way we have now.
I think Maggy Thatchpiece was the start of it all, I think Lionel Blair, has made progress with our schools, the NHS, police, etc but it has gone to his head now and the sooner he goes the better. :D

When was the last time I felt proud to be British, when a captain in Iraq, facing a crowd of roudy demonstrators, lined his troops up and shouted FIX BAYONETS, not for the reason of being right or wrong but because he stood up to adversity and protected his men. I think he was Scotish by the way, good man, they dont like it up em :D

What I would like changed in my own small little way

Ban the BBC tv charges :cussing:
Control water, petrol, gas electric, tax prices
People coming in, and that have come in, to pledge allegance to this fine country, and mean it.
Remove those that do not want to be a part of our country:D
Start looking after this great world we live in, and stop destroying it with our greed

Stand up for our rights for once, and give criminals correct sentances for their crimes. I dont mean hanging though.
