The Round Robin Miniature Idea

This came up in the Biggest Ball of Paint thread and I thought I\'d start a new topic on this.

So the idea was to paint one part of a miniature and then send it off to someone else who paints the next part and so on until the miniatures finished. Some kind of a joint effort thingy, the international multicultural cosmic miniature. The one that went all around the world and into the world of legends. (I thought a little drama was due at this point.)

Now, some doubts came up but I think it could really work. If each painter sent it to someone whom they think they can trust why do you think it shouldn\'t work? Most people here on the board don\'t strike me as deceitful in that way. Of course, the more people are involved the more could go wrong but it\'s also clear that this wouldn\'t work with hundreds of people. Maybe 15-20 would be right with the first one priming and painting the first part and the last one doing the base.
Of course there should be some basic rules like:

-paint one part only(we\'d have to decide what counts as \'a part\'; is the whole skin area a part or are face, hands and feet all parts for themselves; are all armour plates together one part?; ...)
-no conversions,
-no painting over already painted parts,
-etc.(any other ideas?)

We could vote on which mini to paint but I still have some Devourers(as someone mentioned) lying about and I\'d donate one of them, you know, start the thing and then get it rolling.
Whoever receives the package and paints a part has to send it off to the next person at their own cost which really shouldn\'t be all that much if we don\'t send it as 1st class insured Express Mail (but you still can if you want to).
Now, how to decide which one\'s the next to send it to. Well I think it should be people who are active in these forums so that we can all stay in contact and get updates on how it\'s doing every once in a while.
Someone said each painter should take a picture of themselves with the mini. Wouldn\'t it be great if we had a gallery here on CMON? I\'m sure there is still some tiny space left on this server.

As to what happens afterwards, someone suggested selling the figure on eBay and then donate the money to the site which I think is the bestest way to go.

Any suggestions, ideas, opinions, last words?

Hmmm thinking about what counts as a \'part\' of the mini depends on what we hope to achieve at the end of it. Do we want a decent model painted by just a small handful of people, or do we want an interesting muddle of colour and technique representing 15-20 of us?

I also think we should be able to paint over stuff, but not re-paint it - for example, if the flesh had been painted I might want to add tattoos to it, but i couldnt repaint the flesh tones.

Another variation on the theme could be to get a multipart kit with a fair few pieces (like a plastic space marine) and send the pieces individually to 10 different people who paint their bit and send it back to the person who initiated it. They could then put it together and see what we get!

I like the idea but don\'t think that sending the thing in pieces to different people simultaneously is necessarily better, since we\'ll lose coherence (I mean, what if I paint the flesh green and some other guy paints it blue ?)

Also, while a Devourer has lots of different areas to paint, it\'ll need heavy pinning to survive a multiple round-the-world trip. Also, it\'s on the heavier side of minis, which increases the shipping cost (I don\'t think it\'ll be ludicrously high, though, so I\'m fine with it).

Pictures and maybe a short note that everyone leaves (a painting journal ?)would be cool. Also, we should have an ongoing post - pinned, probably - to keep everyone updated with the mini\'s location.

But anyway, count me in. Once we have enough people we can (randomly ?) arrange the shipping order.

I would be happy do take part, howver I have a low post count and still have not posted any work (d*mn camera!) so I understand if I was not included (although maybe if this thing works, it could be done again (ooh, ooh have a few minis going round, one in america, one in europe etc and compare them afterwards as a mini competition!))

Jkaen has a bit of an idea there why not do one per \"Style\" American, Bog standard British, French, Italian and now Russian.
It\'d be a laugh either way!

Jeremie had an idea similar to this ages ago, but I don\'t really think it would work. i mean, the idea is great, but to get a good looking model out of it....I would say sell it on ebay afterwards for charity or something, that would be a cool idea.
the only way it would work if everyone would be following a central biref, otherwise you\'ll just end up with loads of disjointed painted parts, not a model.

When this topic came up on another thread, Finn suggested the mini be more of a CMON mascot than an actual money making endeavor. Which is the way I pictured it as well. A travelling mascot. Maybe, once it is complete, we could use it as a \"traveling trophy\" for winning a painting contest or something like that.

I think the whole idea is great and fun. I believe this is the case when the result is not as important the very course of painting. Because I think we all understand that the mixture of different painting styles and techniques is hardly likely to look harmonious and balanced. But then again, maybe that is the whole point of starting such a thing anyway.

Oh and one more thing. I think there shouldn\'t be something like a list of participants; it would be better if each painter would decide him/herself to whom to send the mini next. Perhaps it would also make sense to think of some time frames (something like not more than a week or two of painting for each participant).

Nah, I don\'t think any of us really thought that we\'d make a huge load of money with this. I just thought that it would be better to sell it because of the question to whom it belongs. What if it turned out great and everybody was screaming \"But it\'s mine!\". But it\'s more likely that it\'ll look like something eaten more than once and in the end everybody rigorously denies being involved in this. lol

What I meant with \"no painting over already finished parts\" is that someone who gets the figure and decides that they don\'t like that the sword is green just paint it red. Freehands of any kind are excluded.

So maybe 15-20 people is a bit much, perhaps about 10 people then and with a 28mm mini? To avoid having anything breaking off we could choose a figure which has not so many parts sticking out in all directions but still with the right amount of details. A Reaper Warlord for example (then we wouldn\'t have the But I don\'t like GW/Rackham! issue either).


I\'m with Margo on the time frame(1-2 weeks is acceptable) and painting order. Each one should decide themselves where to send it next. But I still think it should be people from the forum and not your best friend\'s brother\'s cousin who can paint so darn well.
We have to be able to keep an eye on it, sort of.

I think that this is a nice idea. It shows that part of this community is not just about painting mini\'s for great scores.

Here\'s my 2 pence worth:
Either have a small group 10 -12 (max)or select a really large figure.

Alternatively have a couple of groups doing the same figure.

Either way I look forward to seeing the travels and the work in progress.

Sounds like a great idea Damn, it would mean I\'d have to pull my finger out and get painting though if I\'m one of the chosen few.

I like the idea of doing several, i.e. one for each country. That would keep the postage down only sending to someone within your own location. I also sense a bit of rivalry (in the nicest possible way!) coming in too - ah! healthy competition never hurt anyone

I\'d be interested also. In fact, I\'d like to offer an a mini to donate to this as well. I have an Reaper Warlord Guardian Angel that\'s not really spiking my interest right now, that I think would be good. He\'s only got 3 pieces (body, wings, and base) which are all fairly flat and would be easy to ship without too much risk for damage.

I also have an idea as to what to do with it when it\'s done. Ship it to Chern, as it\'s his site that got us all together in the first place, and he can do with it as he pleases- sell it on eBay as funds for the site, or just keep it as a momento.

Gypsy- are you going to be the one heading this up?

The angel is okay but I\'m concerned about the wings. Maybe something a little more neutral(if that\'s even posssible) would be better, like a simple warrior e.g. I thought about something along the lines of this one here or maybe this one or even this one (which is clearly not neutral anymore, I just like it ).
But we\'d have the problem of having to buy it than just taking one which has been patiently waiting in one of our drawers anyway.
Oh whatever, I\'m going to pay a visit to my local fantasy shop later this day anyway. I could just buy something I believe is suitable and get it over with. How\'s that?
