Well I'm back to work now after 5 weeks off and it's had a pretty negative impact on my productivity. I just can't seem to get any spare time!

I'm currently waiting for the plinth to come through the post so Horus has been put aside for the moment. i've been toying with a few ideas just to finish off the base and i'd like your opinions. I want to attach a brass plaque to the plinth and can't decide between this quote - Let the galaxy burn or a chaos undivided star View attachment 30222
I'm thinking the star would go across two sides of the plinth and I'd like it to have a slightly corroded look. thoughts?

When he is finished would anybody recommend that I put him in the gallery? I know people have had lots of bad experiences with it but I like the idea of having somewhere online where I can store my finished projects. I'm so very torn!

I did manage to get a little bit of painting done on Malacant this afternoon. Just defining the texture on the wings and adding some tone to the shadows.

As always comments and crits welcome

I like the chaos star idea. I did something similar with my Alpha Legion Aspiring chapmion's plinth - only that was round. Put him in the gallery, don't sweat the scoring - it's a badass paint job and that's all that matters :)

I second Zab's motion, great skills, it's nice to have an online gallery where your true friends can check out your stuff, ignore the scores for a few weeks til they settle, then kick the dustbin :)

Lovely. Definately put him in the gallery. Idothat just to have the photos in an easy to keep track of the spot. Do not worry about the scores as they lack consistency...but ayoucan consider a good score icing on the cake.

Besides that good-looking deamon thing with the awesome skin, it's the sight of your marble that made my jaw drop...

Tim, look on Mierce's website. The faction symbol for this guy may be a good one for the base. Or replicate the desighn on his "belt"

Thanks guys. I think I will post him. I'm happy with him regardless of the scores! Let the chips fall where they may.

Chaos star it is then! I've done a tiny bit more to his base, like added some more grass and some dried, dead flowers and he really is now finished. I'm going to wait until the plinth is finished now before I post final pictures.

Malacant continues very slowly. A combination of work and loss of mojo has nearly ground me to a halt. I've done a little bit of fine tuning to the armour and I'm currently debating whether to add powders and rust him up? @Kbear I've not really thought about how I'm going to base this bad boy yet. I was toying with the idea of a battle field summoning circle and the icon would look pretty cool (that would mean sculpting or freehand though....eek!)

I'm really liking painting the skin but I've just come up against a bit of a noob problem. I have no idea what combination of colours I used to do the skin. I didn't note it down and I throw away the baking sheet in my wet palette! I think this is partly responsible for my lack of mojo! Just need to experiment again but it is a bit of a bugger and something I could have easily avoided.

i really found that having two mini's to bounce from helped keep me more motivated, with this in mind not only have I bought Vulkan but also the Forgeworld Avatar with spear. I've always liked the fluff of the avatar and I'm really looking forward to trying some lava effects on his skin

Again thanks for all the kind comments it really does mean a lot and helps keep me pushing myself.

Cheers

Next time take pics of the paints you used with each step :p Been there myself. Good news is you can just do some glazes over the old parts to make them match any new areas. As long as the colors are close you needn't worry about exact matches. Learned that from James Wapple and his shaded basecoat technique!

looking cool that demon, a beast! i know much too well about the color issue, sometimes you just cant find the same combo. luckily this is a demon, no need for the skin to be exactly the same everywhere. and i second Zab, glaze the old parts to match it better.

Haven't seen this log before (shame on me!) and man, nice looking miniatures! Great taste in minis, love these Mierce sculpts. Very creative paintjob on the lizard guy in the beginning and you're off to an awesome start on Malacant, very nice skin colors, especially in the head area. :)

Keep sharing great stuff!

Glaze over old bits to match new bits, gotcha. Thanks guys that had really got me worried there. It had completely taken the wind from my sails and I'm determined to see him finished!

The brass for Horus's plinth arrived today and it's turned out far better than I thought it would. I've spent the 2 hours (it's now just gone 3am!) polishing, ageing and bending it to into something I'm happy with. Quick question, is super glue the best stuff to use to attach it to a wooden base?

Couple of photos of the process

it's late. Night all

coolio! glueing etched brass can be a %#&"#!! but yeah i use super glue. be sure to add pressure quite some time though, it tend to snap off in a very annoying way

Aye, especially on a curved surface, etched brass can be a bitch to get to stick. I still shudder when I think about the Imperial Eagle on the lower leg of my large Cassar's Termy...
Superglue and a tamed octopus, is clearly the way to go.

Right so superglue and lots of pressure for a long time. Am I the only one that can see medic's, A&E and industrial solvents in my immediate future?

Lack of hobby time is becoming a drag. I reckon I might be getting around 30 mins every 3 days at the moment so progress is very slow. Couple that with the fact that I've apparently decided to paint the hardest most unforgiving bloody miniature in all creation as something to help me de-stress (forgeworld avatar) and it all adds up to not a lot happening. Has anyone got any pointers or experiences on painting the avatar? I'm sure I'm going about it the wrong way!

Sorry also for not commenting on everyone else's WIP's. there's loads of great stuff happening on this site at the moment but I really don't have the time to give credit where credit due :( hopefully holidays will be over for my staff soon and I'll be able to get back to normality.

cheers

Crap, I'm so sorry Esco I never replied to your comment! Mierce have got a great selection of sculpts in my opinion. Tons of fine detail without being overly done (cough GW cough)

@Zab yeah after thinking about it for a bit I now plan on G-clamping it. I don't think my wife would ever stop laughing if I glued myself to Horus's base

On a separate note, anyone going to games day (or whatever it's called now) never been before but as it's only 2 hours drive from me i'm quite tempted

If only I had one Dennis you'd be more than welcome.

Ok here's a shot of the leg of the Avatar. I wouldn't normally concentrate this much on one part of a painting but as I wasn't feeling the love I decided to see if I could get it looking at least a little like molten lava and crust on part of the model. If I could then great, I continue. if I couldn't then back on the shelf without a huge lose of time and effort. I'm definitely still not 100% happy with it but it has bought itself a reprieve from Zabs hammer of justice

crits more then welcome on this dude
