Top tips for shopping at the market

Right, here\'s one for you! Take a pair of sturdy scissors and cut the huge trunk off of the broccoli florets. They weigh them you know and you end up paying double! Daylight robbery.

My sister does a similar thing with mushrooms, picking out the stalks, thus leaving the juicy caps for her delectation.

Anyone else got top tips? Save those pennies...

What!? I like the stalks better ! Same with the mushrooms.. tut tut..

oh and um.. when you grab some candy(where you scoop up and fill a bag with misc. candy) and y\'re going to eat it(THEFT!!) pretend that you\'re sneezing, put your hand to your mouth and the candy in mouth goes !

ok that\'s not really shopping...

Top tip #3

Go to the \"Soon To Be Expired\" bin.

My mom can only afford to give me a couple of bucks for lunch, so we always head down to the Safeway at lunch, and pick up as many one-dollar cream pies/cheesecakes/what have you\'s as we possibly can. Doughnuts at a dollar a bag are good investments, too. We then sell the remnants at school for a tidy profit. :D

Picking out cakes that are slightly \"off\" is a good deal, too. We eat as much of it as possible, and then return it for our dollar back, which we promptly spend on another cake.


Good times. :D

I just wish I had some 24hr Safeways or the like. I\'d be going there right nowlol

Or there is 7-11. There bin prices are still double any real stores\'.

had one bargain bin bad experience recently. Some dried Apricots that you wouldn\'t think would go off actually scalded my tongue like a burn from whatever weird mold grew there. Ouch.:|~

I\'ve got a Top tip!

Old people - don\'t go shopping during the week when everyone else is at work and you can have the supermarket to yourselves. Wait until about 6.00 on a Friday when all the workers are trying to cram in their weekly shop before going home. Dither in front of the vegetables trying to decide whether you want one potato and two carrots, or two potatos and one carrot...look aghast when the person at the checkout tells you the total and then try to pay in either \'old money\' with an expired credit card or entirely in the 1p pieces that you have been saving up.

Honestly, there is nothing that enhances the \'shopping experience\' more for the rest of us that waiting around watching your hilarious antics:flip:

my tips...

1. Do not cut any Broccoli. You don\'t have to pay double if you don\'t buy that nasty vegetable...

2. I worked with a guy who would go \'dumpster diving\' behind the grocery stores. The guy definately didn\'t need to save money, as he had every penny he ever earned, but none-the-less he\'d poke through all the different dumpsters. It is rather amazing the decent quality food he would pull out of there. Buns, rolls, chips, etc. etc. If they are past their \'expiration date\' they can\'t sell them, so they throw them out.
But, one time he actually took a ready made \'shrimp cocktail\'. He claimed they looked pretty good, but the smell wasn\'t so great. He also said that they didn\'t taste too good, but they were free, so he ate them all....:|~:|~

I get obsessive over the shape of my potatoes. Dangerously so. That ain\'t a tip mind.

SV, broccoli is man\'s best friend. You shock me.

By the way, you know those potted herbs? I got basil two months ago and it hasn\'t stopped growing. I\'ve used it a couple of times but it just keeps coming back. In fact it has doubled in size! Therein lies my next tip...buy potted herbs.

Anyone tried \'grazing\'?

I used to do it when I was a student.

The idea is to walk around eating the produce out of your basket, by the time you get to the checkout you should have \'grazed\' your way through a whole heap of stuff that you now don\'t have to pay for:D

The hard bit is disposing of the wrappers/stalks/empty bottles/cans etc:bouncy:

When I was younger I would get donuts at the end of the day before they threw them out. They were a few cents each then. I\'m too old to eat donuts all day now but it was fun then.

about the broccoli, Wouldn\'t the market managers get annoyed with all the broccoli and muchroom stems laying around? I guess they could sell them as a new delicacy.

Yes, but the whole point is THEY are the ones taking OUR cash for their fibrous stalks! It makes me angry...:flame:
