all i can say for sure vincenti, is that if you\'re waitin\' to see if they will open up some of the categories, don\'t hold your breath...

as the official word on g.d. this year has been to streamline it, and make the rules global, there is more restriction in the new rules, not more freedom...

if ya feel like you\'ve already won enough gw comps, than don\'t sweat it...we are a community regardless of wether or not we all have the mythical demon...

ya feel that your at the top of your game, so no worries...ya don\'t have anything to prove at games day...

some of us still have a few steps on the ladder to climb...i wanna upgrade my bronze to a gold, and bring home a sword, so i have to follow the rules...once i\'ve achieved my goals, i don\'t have to jump through gw\'s hoops...

i would much rather spend my money to go to gencon again this year, as it is a much better con than g.d. by a long shot, but i have to keep focused on my goals...

this is a hobby, a passion, an obbsesion, so it\'s easy to understand why ya feel the way ya do, but g.d. is not the pinnacle of paintin\' or community in the mini world...

cheers
jah

@SG-I was also lucky to have a great painter at my local Gw, won a few golds i think before he started working for Gw. But unfortunately at the two stores i go to only one of the staff is a good painter (maybe two in preston store) but southport i just get told i should drybrush and urgh.

Its a shame that it has become so profit orientated but i guess since sales are down they are scraping the barrel. I think despite all the faults people have to plod on and keep entering. If all the good painters stopped entering then the new painters wouldn\'t see what to aspire to

I feel that GW biggest problem is that they are too polarised with what they do. I don\'t know if they do any market research, but all their ideas seem to go to one extreme or the other. For example, Assault Cannons in WH40K used to be next to useless, but now they are one of the best weapons available to the point that many GT are (were) assault cannon duels.
I feel that their current GD painting rules are just another example of this. They had worked quite hard to have the competition get more prestige to attract the best talent around to increase the awareness of the whole hobby, but now they seem to be afraid of losing people to other brands and artists.
The way i see it is, if people like Scibor and Allan Carrasco (?) keep entering brilliant sculpts, people are going to wonder why GW don\'t do similar minis or styles.
Two answers spring to mind:
A) GW sculptors are not of the same calibre as these other people, therefore go and buy other peoples (not GW) better minis.
B) GW sculptors are of the same calibre,
but they are hampered by GW brand and mentality about change, therefore look to another company who may make other styles that you want to paint.
Both options are not good for GW, so i guess rather than ease up on your constraints about what does constitute a Space Marine or an Ork, make it so other styles are not visible. Don\'t relax your guidelines a little, restrict them a lot. Ironically, the more GW tighten their entry guidelines, the more people will abandon GD.

GD comps

I gave up entering years ago, after gaining a gold silver and bronze in 1995, then tried the following year to go one better, was told by GW area manager that they did not want the same ppl winning every year as it discouraged the new comers!!!!! 1995 there was no slayer sword as they had a disagreement with the manufacturer, well thats what I was told. then they said all bases had to be the size of the models original supplied base... then I see single minis on a base the size of a shoe box?? go figure!! Then to top it, I was working part time in local GW store mainly as the shop painter and teaching painting to all the kids and got laid off cos I did not teach the games while acting like an insane chimp and make myself look stupid? I even got asked by GW to apply for jobs in Notiingham, but as an established illustrator and working could not work for peanuts.. you have to work for the love of working for them not cos you need money to live.
well I have not had a rant for years, that was fun...

As a guy who is going to his first GD this year with little box of figures in his hand hoping to make first cut I find this topic very interesting from a number of ways...

Adrian paints the Military side of the hobby as being a tad more turned on about judging than GW are when in effect there\'s just as much discussion goes on about judging after a Euro Militaire Show(big annual military show, worth a visit) as is said about golden demon judging here. same will be said about all major comps, because what appeals to each and everyone of us is different.

I have been involved with taking the pictures at Euro Militaire for a couple of years now and I say this for a reason, just because a figure looks good from 4 feet away doesn\'t mean it looks good from 6 inches, i used to wonder why some pieces don\'t get medals and its only when you handle some of them that you see glue streaks, primer, brush strokes and bad painting from holding them close up you find out why

Being a judge is thankless task who would want to pick out one entry from all those down there , do you think ANYONE could be right, do you thank that all the people who go would and could AGREE on one figure, I would bet against it.

All that being aside i do think that an open system is best but would the talk of who gets best in show (slayer sword) be any less of a debate I bet it wouldn\'t.

I am so looking forward to going to GD this year I am like a little kid and I am 43, so if you a slightly over weight fella with glasses smiling like a daft lad then thats me..the following weekend I will be at Euro Militaire too ....above everything I find its the social bit of the show I enjoy most, the comp whilst important does take a back seat.

The group/forum I belong too The Basement will also be at Platoon Britannica, we have been trying to do in our own way Adrian is right we need to get the UK modellers together so we can make sure the hobby moves forward and for a company that doesn\'t look forward giving WW to PB for free so they can do this seems pretty good to me.

My apologies for whaffling

The red warning on the gw site has been there for over a year, its not new at all, so it shouldnt really be anything to worry about.

Alex
