The instructions that came with mine actually encourage the use of boiling water for the initial paper soaking. I use a cookie sheet and pour the boiling water in it until the sheet is covered. When it cools down to room temperature, it is ready to go. I had mixed luck with mine like Gilivan until I did it this way, so maybe his paper is extra tough and just needs some tenderizing.
GW & VGC paints stay ready to use on mine for over a month (I painted at Christmas and then forgot about it until mid February).
The penny trick is based on copper toxicity, check aquarium sites for more info. Copper wire should also work quite well, though some ickys may not fall prey to it.
