Works In Progress II

Three Amazons

This time I think it will work, and they\'re resized! These are the first three minis I ever painted. They are not yet complete, as I need some pointers on finishing them up. While working on them, I became VERY frustrated, and ended up ripping off their heads and arms, thus..... no heads and arms. Oh and on the last pic, ignore the orange fellow in the background. Any and all comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

@Malleus--great start! I especially like the gemwork.
@Tidoco--I am a metallics guy myself; I hope you don\'t go to NMM lol. It looks very good so far.
@Awcho--Beautiful...black is so hard to work with for me (as is white, blue, yellow, red...:)).
@Spex--Glad you made it to the WIP\'s thread! Nice start to the headless amazons. First the good: I don\'t see any mold lines. A minor detail, but one that some folks will notice and dock you for. Your basecoat is pretty neat, with only a few spots on the sandal going astray onto the skin. Some critiques: I would thin your paints. See how it looks bumpy on the loincloths? Thinning your paint will help that. Two or three thin coats will get the same coverage with less of that bumpiness. I would proceed with some additional shading of all three in addition to some darklining of the areas where the sandals, bracers, and clothes meet the skin. Your metallics have a good start, but need some additional definition. This is what I need the most work on, atm. It is difficult to highlight and shade metallics. Follow Tidoco here at CMoN--he is one of the best here with metallics (please ignore that sucking up sound
lol). Jakob Rune Nielson and Cyril also are well known for their metallic work. JRN has a website with tutorials that is most helpful here.

Here is another effort. Balto is a little reaper gnome. He is pretty rough in his transitions at this point, which I will be working on. The kid I am painting him for wanted a blue/black look. Any color scheme suggestions? Would you add another color for some variety or just stick with what I have?

Awcho - AWESOME! It\'s like it stepped right out of Geiger\'s dream, or nightmare depending how you look at it. How long have you been working on it? Did you sculpt the model yourself?

Fantastic work awcho !!!!

If I\'m not mistaken that\'s the fell beast of the Witch-king isn\'t it ? Beautiful work on it so far.

How have you found the sculpt of that bad boy ? How much of it is Metal/Plastic...

Can\'t wait to see more.

Jabber;

I\'ve got two of these in process on my desk at the moment. They are bloody small, pretty nice work on them so far. Since you went with the Blue theme I would use silver nmm for the metals so it stays cool, unless you really want to punch it up with some gold. Looks like you got a little extra bleed of the shadow under the mini\'s right eye, you might want to touch up with some of your skin base color. Are you planning on leaving the spellbook holder whote or no? I did mine in leather with gold trim, but mine mini was also done in greens... Look forward to seeing your finished product.

@Spex_mini_goddess;

I agree with Jabber, thin your paints. Like most beginning mini painters you are trying to cover the flesh areas with one good thick base coat. This tends to look lumpy, especially when blown up when you photograph it. Klute did a thread recently on painting skin. My wife RedDawn, also a relative new comer to the hobby has found it useful and is working through it now. And if you look at Mark\'s gallery you will see that he definitely knows how to do skin. On the clothing, you\'ve got your base color down, now work on layering on your shade and highlight colors. You have a lot to learn but you\'ve found a great place to do so here on C-MON. read all the articles, keep working at it and experimenting, and you\'ll be amazed at how quickly you will improve. ;)

Cheers,
Grumb

Yeah, ajthomas is right. It\'s GW\'s Witch King on Fell Beast. The body is metal and the wings are plastic. Unfortunately the body and wings don\'t fit together very well. Otherwise, the sculpt is great with nicely detailed skin and a good sense of movement.

Awacho, The metal effect on his helm is beautiful. As is the speckally effect on the skin.

It\'s smooth, It\'s dynamic.............why isn\'t it mine ???
