World Expo 2011

Anyone care to either point at a website (All the ones I saw focused on the place rather then the event) or describe the competition format?

I want to try and compete for this one, and I\'d like to set some realistic goals. The thing abotu Games Day is that they\'ve got the prizes but also first cut, final cut etc. and it\'s never too early to plan this stuff!

The site PrawnPower linked to is the official site for the event. As the event is just starting to be planned there is not much info to give out (and it\'s more than two years until the event). Each expo is its own event, organised by a local organisation.

The format of the competition is the open system. There are a number of categories to enter, usually Fantasy Junior, Fantasy Painting, Fantasy Master Painting, Fantasy Open, Historical Junior, Historical Painting, Historical Master Painting, Historical Open and a bunch of AFV classes. The judging is performed by teams of experienced and respected painters/sculptors etc.

Hmm.... looks like just the one real category for me, fantasy painting. That\'ll be tough!

Do they go for much 28mm stuff, or should I start praticing 54mm immediately I wonder?

I am looking very forward to this, and I love setting up goals for these kind of things. I\'ve started the savings already and I\'ve been looking at hotels.

Do they judge the models in \"heat\'s\" or anything like that?

What\'s the master categories for? Previous winners or simply people who want to throw their hat in that ring?

\"Master\" is simply \"advanced\". It\'s open to everyone, but the judging is a lot tougher.

There are many ways to conduct judging in open system competitions. I know how the judging was done during the last expo, as I talked with some of the judges afterwards. The judging was not made in heats, since there is no elimination process. Each contestant is judged purely on the level of his/her work. There is no limit on the number of a certain award... if you earn it you\'ll get it, no matter how many others who get the same award.

You can be judged either on your entire display in a certain category (if the entries are consistent in quality), or on just one piece (if one piece is decidedly better than the rest). Each judge rate the work individually and then their scores are added for a total score. Above a certain score means gold, above another means silver, etc.

There were plenty of 28 mm minis on display in the fantasy classes. But, many painters like to have larger things as they will be more visible and give a better impact on the viewers.

Thanks Anders!

But they still give put a First, second, third style trophy to winners as well, correct?

I am going to really try and up my game. I am going to have fun first, but I would like to push myself to get some type of official acheivement. This is going to be a blast!

Do the Swiss have Karaoke? We should arrange that! I challenge Anders to an \"Ace of Base\" vs. \"Tragically Hip\" National applause-off Karaoke world championship of the univers.

No, they have bronze, silver and gold. How many that gets each award is decided by how many that are deemed worthy. That\'s the open system. You could have 20 golds or none in a class. This system generally leads to less bickering from the crowd and less randomness from the judges. It also means you don\'t actually compete AGAINST the other painters, as their work don\'t influence the judging of YOUR entries (except, possibly, for how the judges set the bar).

Apart from the gold, silver and bronze awards you have Best Of Show, Best Of Historical, Best Of Fantasy and a number of other special awards (manufacturer awards, etc.) and each of these only have one winner, of course.

I find this system much more appropriate for competitions at this level. I mean, take the category I entered last year: Fantasy Master Painting. There were six golds. That means six painters were deemed to be at more or less the same level. If they would have had to give out 1st, 2nd and 3rd price instead, three of these would have gotten nothing and how would they decide which three? How would they decide which one deserved to be the winner? That opens up for a lot of randomness and subjectiveness in the judging. There can be a lot of medals going out sometimes, but I can assure you that it doesn\'t diminish the sense of achievment receiving them. Sharing gold with five other painters felt more right than I would think being a sole winner would, as you know there are more than one painter who deserves to \"win\". This way you can share your experience with them.

EDIT: If I misunderstood your question and you wanted to know if the winners get a physical trophy, then yes! Usually a medal. :)

Its an excellent system from what I\'ve heard and gives you excellent feedback on what standard your painting is.

Okay, I see how the judging could be a real positive experience. Thanks guys!

I am really gonna work for this one. 2 years is a good length for me to get practicing. I got some 54mm stuff I\'ll get to work on.

-Also I note that Ritual appears to have avoided the karaoke challenge......

Coward!

Okay, this is maybe not a fair question to ask, but I\'ll try anyway.

Would there be a fiar comparison to the CMON scores for the Gold, Silver, Bronze score ranges?

Like, is bronze roughly an 8, silver and 8.5 and gold over a 9?

I am not completely hung up on the scores or any of that jazz, I just like to have goals to shoot for. And \"just paint to your best and make your best better\" is a great zen like sort of philosophy but I do likes my hard and fast kind of goals to aim for.

In a perfect world I\'d liek to paint up one of GenerulPoleaxe\'s mini\'s for this event. He\'s been really great to me on here and I would sure love to do a great job and achieve somethign with one of his models. That 54mm orc is great!

No! CMON scores mean nothing at all! Sure, a 6 on CMON wouldn\'t get a gold, or probably anything at all, but you can\'t say a certain CMON score would give you a certain award at a show like this.
