Yet another WIP thread - by RayzrYR

OK, so it's SOOOOO easy to sit back and browse through everyone else's WIP threads, but dammit, it makes me want to paint! Why can't I browse this site and paint at the same time? Ok, so I'd need 2 heads and at least one extra arm, but you know what I mean right?
So here is the current state of my portable workspace with current projects ongoing. I hope these pictures upload right :)

Ya could always get one of those readers for the blind. Have it set up to read each new forum thread. More time for painting! Yay!

lol, thanks PegaZus, but how would I look at the pretty pictures too?
Also on the workspace for you consideration are the following:

I'd like to get some advise on the skin of the immature nephilim ( the kids running with knives), and their mother Lilith. Any wise words?

I can see the struggle with the little guys. One on the left looks like he's been up to his waist in a hot bath; the middle looks like bacon strips; and the right has giant splotches. No offense meant, btw. Just was the first impression that hit me.

How to fix it? Oh wow. No clue. Random thoughts typed out: Make them more like their mother, with generally red skin. Paint only half of them red, blending up to the peachier color you've got. Paint them solidly peach, but then down their spines paint it in bright red and blend it out from the backbone, possibly going up and over the shoulders, neck, towards the temple to a nice red crown.

Bout all my painting-hack of a brain can come up with at the moment.

I have those guys sitting around. Haven't gotten to painting them yet though. So you're ahead of me there! As for skin - it's a very hard "color" to get right, as I've been rather forcefully reminded of lately. My best advice is to look at lots of source photos, and try to get a feel for the colors involved and where the shadows and highlights fall.

mmmmm bacon.

Uh, thanks guys. No offense taken, none at all.
@TrystanGST the wide claw arms were a pain to get on. So they're sitting ugly for a moment, while I finish an earlier project.

I had a bit of time this evening to snap some shots of this Land Raider for my Deathwing Army. It's about as bright as I want it to get, but it came out quite dusty after drybrushing, so I'm planning to give it a wash(?) with a thinned out mix from the previous layer. Currently I'm trying out various paints. I was using GW foundation Calthan Brown. It has since retired. I'm trying out a Vajello brown which looks very similar to me. I was also using GW Bleached Bone. Also retired by GW. grrrrr. I had a look at the current generation paints, their recommended replacements etc, but I found that they weren't as close as other colours. I replaced Bleached Bone with an Army Painter bone colour.
Notice the gun that goes with the tank is painted differently. It, and the others not pictured were painted more than 18 months ago, before we moved house, and I was probably trying to get the thing finished before we moved. Now I need to get these parts back together, so that they look like they belong to the same tank. Keep in mind they'll be for gaming , not display. See how we go.

A little about me and my painting - it usually only happens when no one else is around, or everyone else here is in bed. Usually it means I get to start painting at about 10pm saturday night after aday full of doing house or family stuff. I had a couple of hours today though that came up free, so I grabbed 'em and tried something new - Juice. I've started applying it to the Land Raider.

DADWLRwip119a.jpg

You (hopefully) can see the difference between the halves of the panel pictured - the side right of pic is after the drybrush, on left of pic I have applied about six or seven juice coats of the same colour as the drybrush to smooth out the graininess. So the idea of the Juice is interesting. I'll probably try it out on the Bacon Kids next.

There's some graininess from the camera, but I can indeed see a difference. What is this juice? Surely you don't rub cranberries on your tank?

So I had some time the other day to put a few more coats on the Land Raider, and some time today to post them. I'm working at a new store now, which means every second Thursday I don't start until about 3:30pm. I've also toned down the brightness of the sponson and turret weapons, so that they look a bit more like the body of the tank. I started by giving them a thin coat of Vajello German Cam brown, which I am using as a replacement for the retired GW Calthan Brown, I then went over them with a light stipple/ drybrush of Army Painter Skeleton Bone (my replacement for GW Bleached Bone)

Maybe it's the photo's but the colour on the bottom pic looks brighter, I'll look at giving that a couple of extra coats. Today I also blacked out the tread, and gave it all ubiquitous coat of GW Blotgun metal. With a new roster I hope to have more done soon.

It has been a little while, but I am also a bit lazy :D
I have been working on my Land Raider further
LR121012d.jpg

The tracks I tidied up with black then a coat of GW Boltgun metal, but I went over the joins in each link with Black again. The tracks have had a wash of GW Brown ink, and a juice of GW Shadow grey, as the bases on my Deathwing force have been themed on Industrial/ Ash wasteland. I have also applied a single coat so far of the Shadow Grey on the lower part of the tank as weathering for ash, but I'll do more of this later.
LR121012c.jpg

This panel started out as a failure of painting - when started the GW Bleached Bone coat I was painting it on (rather than dry-brushing as I did with most of the rest) but my "skills" being rusty, I was putting it on too thick. I went back over with my new base coat and re-shaded, but by then I had gone on to the rest of the tank. When I came back to this bit I had a thought of using this panel to give the machine a bit of its own character. A little piece of heraldry all of its own. I think in 40k fluffology the vehicles are just as much characters as the rest, so why not?

LR121012b.jpg

Heraldry on the other side, highlighted. I start with GW Dark Angels green, then 4:1 DAGreen and GW Bad Moon Yellow, then 3:2 the same colours. Since this shot, I've gone back over with thinned DAGreen to make the lines finer.

LR121012.jpg

DA chapter heraldry on the side of the tank. I love that these pieces came included with the Dark Angels character sprue a while back, I hate that we had to pay nearly as much as a squad box set to get them, and they didnt have a full squad inside.... anyway. Green robe, red sword, pretty well standard. The wings are GW Shadow grey, then 1:1 Shadowgrey: GW Space Wolf grey. The next layer will be pure SWGrey.

Slowly, slowly...
See ya.

I think your doing great. Have you ever considered getting an airbrush or rattlecan color for doing Vehicles? Personally i am liking the new GW colours so far. I'm working on my DW LR too, but i haven't posted any picks yet. It's mostly green atm. Need to finish the termi and troops squads too...sigh... and all the malifaux to do too.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks Moe!
I haven't ever looked at an airbrush for a few reasons - I dont have money anymore, I have a house and kids :)
When I did have money I just bought more mini's :D
This is only the 4th tank I've ever painted (! whirlwind and 2 rhinos before) but I did quite a bit of scenery back in my gaming days.
I too have plenty more to finish, including Malifaux (see above for proof!)

Not much done over Christmas/ New Year. Not much, but some.
Little bits and pieces on the Land Raider, small details.
Hmmm, photobucket seems intent on being very annoying. But here are the pics.

Then little miss rayzryr decided she wanted to see how the guns worked on daddys model. And one sponson weapon became 3 parts...

So a little bit of fixing to do on that one.
Those reds dont look quite so orange IRL.
But we didn't stress that one too much, and moved on.

I have some more updates for your consideration. I'm nearly almost done this one!! This really excites me for a few reasons: I'm not great at finishing painting jobs, easily distracted and lose motivation; also I purchased this tank... 2011... I think. I picked it as part of a gift card purchase from my parents. BTW, I'll be 33 this year. Since I've joined this site, I've really noticed an improvement. I should put up some of my completed earlier Deathwing to give example. This tank complements that army, but I'll not call that army done.

Lenses/gems and I have never got along well. I kept trying, but I've never been happy with my results. These, although not great, are probably my best to date and this Land Raider has many little details that could be taken as lenses/ view ports.

BTW, blurry photos taken with my mobile, as my other cameras are out of battery atm.

DWLandRaider5800x600_zpsb4224f70.jpg

The large weapons are not fixed, the HB turret at the front pops in/out easily, and the sponsons are held on by blu-tac for now. This allows easier storage in my existing army case, and won't be changing for the forseeable future.

I haven't yet decided on a proper heraldry for this side panel, I may just leave it like this. I was thinking crossed swords or sword-through-skull, or maybe fist-holding-sword. Kinda typical DA stuff though. :/

DSC00243800x600_zps74e9fc9e.jpg

Just a few little details, and I'll call it done. Primarily I aim for tabletop quality in my painting, but I do like to have some pride in my work too. It's a great feeling when you put the pieces down on the table together, to have someone come and pick them up and say, "that's really good".

A little look at where I'm planning to go next. Got those Cultists waiting, and I grabbed some metals from Red Box Games. Thats Lady Nynaeve there with a cultist. I'm waiting for some more Red Box stuff to arrive from the first Kickstarter they ran. I've held off joining the second yet, but I'm watching...

I am with you on waiting on RedBoxs second KS until I see mini's from the first.

It is nice to see how we all improve from each others wips too. :)

First off, great looking stuff.
Second, if you want to browse and paint, just keep the computer close and browse while paint dries, that is what I do.
Third, who makes the big red demon and the little Nephilim?

Chadders - those are all part of the Lilith Malifaux box.
