Nah, been fighting so kind of uber bug for a few weeks and it finally took me out. All good now though - just need to take it slow and get that painting mojo back before I break out the AB. I think the squig and his base are gonna go like shit through a goose with the AB and a few tricks I've learned trying out the SBT and a few weathering powders too. Very excited to get to work but i don't want to rush in and make a mistake and blow away hours of work that got it all this far ;)

Lmao. Is shit through a goose good or bad? Or is it a measurement of speed. Either way I had a good laugh and shall incorporate the saying into my vocab. Take your time buddy. Let me know when you get a sbs of your sbt on your blog look forward to seeing what you learned as well as what I can learn.

Thanks Blood! The devil is in the details, right? Got some time after The Agent of Chaos' B-Day party to finally post the pics of Rosie. I'm still not quite using all of JW's Shaded Bascoat Technique (SBT). Mainly due to my continued unfamiliarity with the figures. So I do a traditional basecoat and get color unity by mixing all my basecoat colors together when highlighting up the midtones. This one took under 2 hours. Not display quality, but TT for sure - kind of a cartoony feel to it. Also, I totally nailed that "Oh really?" look I get from The Lady Inquisitor with the raised eyebrow. When I showed her, she made the same face as the mini and I lost my shit and ran for the hills laughing. The icing on the cake was when The Agent of Chaos said "Oh mommy she looks just like you!"
I had tears in my eyes as I stumbled blindly for safety :rotfl:

The last figure I do before the Squig will use the whole process from beginning to end since it will be a space marine, which I am very familiar with. I'm getting faster and better at the SBT though and things are starting to click - especially the glaze/shade and details/final highlight parts. Just gotta nail down that shaded basecoat (to get that all important color unity right out of the gates) with the big brush and remember not to choke up on the brushes for the initial layers too much.

Back to vacation mode now before that eyebrow starts to arch again...
Cheers gang!

Okay, last test mini before I get back to the good stuff like Digga's Squiga! Got my painting mojo back on this one:brushlick: I present to you "The 90 Minute Marine" (using the Shaded Basecoat Technique developed by James Wappel)

I'll snap some better pics and throw him up in the gallery for votes and possibly to sell on eBay too. The Marine took around 90min, the display base took about 10min - assembly and priming included (drying times not included). Not too shabby and lots of fun. If you are beginner just starting out in painting I can say that I recommend this technique - batch painting would be a snap too with this technique if you don't have an airbursh. If you are a veteran painter it's still really fun to do, but requires you to let go and "unlearn" a lot of things you hold onto.

It's a fun way to paint and yields really nice results in very little time!:good:

HRRMPH!

Goes back to feathering a square milimeter with his 00000 "brush"

Looks awesome dude! An e-bay winner fo' sho!

I got kinda burnt out after watching the 7 day army painter video so be careful! No more squads for you for a couple of months ok? :p

On the other hand, I think Wappel has a great philosophy and approach to painting. Also being able to get something to where this guy is at quickly lets you focus on stuff like composition for your scenes, or test out color schemes in a jiffy! Pretty sweet!

Thanks Demi, yeah I'm swearing off squads for a while after that whole NOVA thing. Fun but so draining!

Thanks Digga, I cheated a bit and cleaned up their edges with a micron pen - don't tell anyone ;)

Thank you CPT, I wanted to stay away from salamander or sons of medusa green so this seemed like a good balance.

Hey Kat! Yeah some one sold me on getting "A FEW" from them and next thing I know I have enough to drown an elephant o_O If you do try it use a really well defined sculpt or one that you know really well because it's a bit hard to learn on weak or unfamiliar sculpts.

Thanks Canny, that's really what this is all about - instant gratification :p and easy eBay moneys!!!

Ugh, that was a LONG week. Airbrushing evenings all week. Squig base was too big for desktop spray station had to do that outside today in the garage. Getting flu, will rest up a bit before continuing on with brushes. Tired, but happy with progress. Learned so much about difference between Badger's Patriot and Velocity. Love both ABs sooooo much right now. Can't see a lot of the subtle color filters in the pics, but you'll get the idea of where I'm going.

Getting organized...
