Portal of Blood (Work in Progress)
This little piece of work was inspired by a painting I did some months ago (included in the pic above). Mainly I wanted to depict a pivotal and memorable scene from the Horus Heresy, namely Blood Angels Primarch Sanguinus defending the Imperial palace´s Ultimate Gate against the forces of chaos, personified in the Bloodthirster Ka´bandha. The daemon is a little less prominent in the painting compared to Sanguinius´ imposing figure, which is all very well, he is going to lose, after all… But the pose and look of it had potential for more, so I wanted to do Ka´bandha justice with a Miniature (although by the size of the thing it cannot realistically be called mini any more; The black rivets around the portal are standard round bases, to give you an indication of scale). I really wanted to use a little gimmick I had planned: glass bead as the daemons eyes, which have a real nice effect, but only were available in one size, so the daemons size would be strongly influenced by this. As I realised just HOW big the ´Thirster would be, I used the idea of the portal (no, i´m not a Stargate-fan as I have yet to see a single episode, by the way, although I saw the motion pic once) just to save a lot of Magic Sculpt (which is brilliant, especially for large mini´s). As it came to pass, this proved doubly fortuitious as the portal gave a strong visual anchor as well as another nice touch: I drilled from the portal´s backside straight through the daemon´s back and head, and now the eyes can be lighted from the inside. Being even less than a white belt in electronics, I use a simple battery torchlight which can be hidden in the body cavity. The portal will of course be filled with blood (not REAL blodd, stupid), and as the Daemon breaks through, it oozes down to the ground forming a rough star-shape… The daemon´s axe is skull-shaped as are his armour pieces to further show his allegiance to Khorne, which will more or less make the paintjob traditionally (red/black/brass), with the portal possibly kept mainly black to represent obsidian. I still am unsure if I will leave the sculpt of the portal itself the way it is, as I fear further ornamentation could fuzz the focus away from the daemon itself? Please tell me what you think, comments are highly appreciated!! Happy Painting to you all and thanks for watching!
