Dienekes the Spartan
"Oh, oime" cried out the actors of Greek tragedies when confronted with pain and missfortune! And this is how I felt moving from the world of Confrontation scale to 28 mm!! Dear Gods, Zeus allmighty, what a change of perspective and work effort. How did I manage to paint those eyes remain a mystery to me. This is my third highlight attempt... and eventhough everybody says red is a b*tch, I can't seem to be able to let it go. This is a Spartan Officer... which means red!:) As a Greek myself however, I could not resist trying out Wargames Foundry Hoplites. I find they have some of the best. His name is Dienekes (I'm telling you it is! :) ), commander of the Hercules Regiment. When told that the Persians have so many archers, that when they fire their arrows blot out the sun, he said "Good. Then we'll have our battle in the shade." (as recorded by Herodotus) For people interested in the Spartans and Lakedaimon... I suggest you read "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield and "300" by Frank Miller. The saying on the pic means "Either on it or under it.", meaning the Spartan's shield. It was what the Spartan Women told their sons and husbands, when the men left for war. Either you come back carrying your shield or being carried on it. Losing your shield or neglegting it was a major "sin". Again this is not a photo but a scan! Sorry... PS. Just realized that because of the helmet nobody can see the eyes... damn and I really lost my eyesight to paint them. Sorry Nr. 2
