bgcdazzler's first ever mini WIP (a confusion of cockups and learnings)

Such a nice gradations and smoothness, also a very good understanding of colour imo. for just your 4th? 5th miniature? I think you are becoming a really skilled painter in almost no time at all. Congrats mate.

Aw, you're going to make me blush. Actually at this stage I can only see the imperfections - the frustration of it being not 'quite' what I have in my head. But if that means I keep improving, then so be it.

EDIT: oh, and Maulg is my 5th. Korgi's base is my 2nd base, and Maulgy is officially the first mini I'll have to paint eyes onto. Gulp!

This is a biggish update, so I'll try not to waffle on (and fail miserably).

the base:

not many wip pics here, but here's some steps for korgi's base. The paint went on really well.

Added some darkness to the vivid red, and neat ended up the crack edges here. Sorry about the over-exposed pics.

Added some dead grass and more highlighting in blue, yellow and green (though you can't tell on these pics). The 'grass' is actually fibres from an old stick of bamboo, so this base cost absolutely nothing to produce. Yay!

Oh, and added some crusty bits to the lava too.

Fixed the broken korgi (grumble mutter curse) and roughly positioned him with a bit of blu-tac. So this is more or less the final look, barring neat ending up, tweaks and slime.

I think he looks pretty happy in his new home, but honestly I have been painting this dude so long, I've lost all perspective on it. All advice and criticisms are very, very welcome. I won't cry if you're brutal!

The monster is awesome and the base is awesome, but the picture of them together is just a touch of imho. It may be the picture or else possibly work some of the purple of his legs into the shadows of the rock to tie the composition togetion more. (The lava is outstanding).

Thank you all for your lovely comments. Very kind of you. Krule, I was thinking something was not right (apart from the silly rock on his foot: tonally too light and different to the rocks on the base), and I think you're right: the base is too 'warm' and some purple will help cool it and tie it in. I'll give it a go tonight.

Cheers all, keep em coming!

You have definite skills and I think that KruleBear's suggestion is spot on. Perhaps you could bring some smaller rocks in front of the one he's attached to to blend it in a bit more stylistically.

NNow that's a mega huge landslide of a project..this thing has all the dos and none of the donts....I see even the littlest things that you've managed to keep an eye on example would be "perfect highlight placement, like the darkest parts under the chin ,neck/chest tie in area, kept dark like under the armpits as well....this is an easy 8.5-8.7 average when it's posted.easily ......this thing is great.very enjoyable model to look at....seller job.

Wow, thanks guys. BaM, I must admit I haven't put anything in the gallery yet, and thought he might be first when he's finished. I was hoping for a solid 6-7 score, so if you're right my mind is officially blown. We shall see.

In the meantime I've been working more on the Maulg paintalong, and here's where he stands at the moment. I'll keep putting updates here too so I don't lose track and when I want to revisit my WIP in future years as I puff contentedly on a pipe.

The scaling on his back has turned out really nicely. Good idea well executed.

Ah. Er... is this a good time to mention that I just painted over the scales? :D

In fairness, I just wasn't happy with how they were turning out. I'm going to try something else this time.

Sorry!

:) It's your miniature, so go for it.

Looking forward to seeing what you have planned.

Here's a repost of the steps I went through last night. I also posted this on the paintalong thread (and do pop by, there's some awesome painting going on over there), but thought it worth showing here too as it has a little SBS in it...

After trying to highlight the scales (and turning them to mush) I gave up and painted over them.

So hopefully third time lucky...

I decided that what was wrong was two things:

1. They are dark on light, making them look like tiles
2. They are in too random a pattern - they should be more organised, and thicker at the spine tapering off to smaller scales at the edge (like a snake)

with those two things in mind I redid them last night. Here's a few steps with shading at the end shown in the cold light of day. Are these better?

Step 1: spine first

Step 2: blocking in large near the centre, smaller at the edges

Step 3: finished, and taken over the tops of the arms and shoulder blades

Step 4: with shading

i also did a bit on the loincloth details: just a mix of copper and silver at the moment. You can also see some of the scales and how they blend over the shoulders here.

Was awesome before, but it looked more like cool freckles (I may steal the concept). Now it looks like awesome 'gator skin.

Quick sanity check, please!

i've turned my thoughts to Maulgy basing, and mocked this up. Am I being ridiculous? Is it too big and silly? Your advice is very welcome!
