Oh, by the way don\'t forget the economics. Smokers cost everyone money.

So does welfare...ban it?
So do prisons...let em loose?
I could go on and on...

But I truly think the topic is dead.

Someone mentioned a free market. I\'ve often wondered why there wasn\'t an industry movement to avoid government regulation by self-regulating.
In other words, why didn\'t half the bars in California become non-smoking? My only guess is no one was willing to be first to do it. If the industry was willing to permit smoking/non-smoking designations, why didn\'t anyone adopt the latter before the laws were passed?
I think the problem here was everyone \"knows\" that if you don\'t allow smoking in your bar (or restaurant), then you\'ll lose your customers that smoke. No one wanted to try perhaps new and innovative ways to advertise their smoke-free bar, which some people might actually have wanted, and who knows, might have brought in new customers that didn\'t want to be in a smoking environment. Part of the reason state and/or local governements had to step in was because of this sort of behavior. Some places do lose money, for example here in New York State people just go to Connecticut or New Jersey if they want to go to a bar or restaurant to smoke (at least in places close enough to make this a realistic proposition at least). In California though its less of an issue since most places in California are not that close to state borders. The other amusing phenomenon happening here in the city is that some hotels are allowing people to smoke and just paying the fines involved in order to let their customers smoke. Sometimes the free market works and sometimes it doesn\'t...

Also, in Australia, most people actually go the bars and pubs with friends, or to meet friends. Some friends will be non-smokers and some wont. The smokers, not wanting to go without, will veto the non-smoker bars/pubs, and so said establishments miss out on both smokers and non-smokers.

Or vice versa...the non-smokers will veto the smokers.

This was more of an observation than an hypothesis...

So was mine, If my friends want to sit in the non-smoking section, we sit in the non-smoking section...unless it\'s my birthday or some other special occasion then they all pick the smoking section for me. If your friends don\'t care at all about your wishes get new friends.

I just have this inability to not answer when some one raises a point.

But it\'s still not as bad as Supervike\'s \"word association\" Thread.lol

That\'s state spending. Don\'t leave out federal spending on health care.

However, if we are going to stop spending healthcare dollars on people just because they have unhealthy habits, exactly what will that do to, say, AIDS research ??? Surely, with all the information available on the subject of unprotected sex, anyone who continues to engage in such a practice beyond the bounds of abject monogamy is not worthy of our tax money. Where is the difference between them & smokers? Both are engaging in a risky act voluntarily with the potential to adversely effect others.
