I agree with nosebleeds,I think that the lining of a brown or dark green would really pop the eyes further1 of the rules and layers of contrast rem dark next to light....I also wouldn't say it unless I believed you have the steadiest of hands and the technical skil to do so.....hmm lets see tips to give regarding this ....ok ..so when doing freehand or detail work the trick is NOT to hold the brush as normal.....it is to CHOKE UP ON THE BRUSH,bring your fingertips towards the metal crimping....better stability...and oh yeah ,thin your paint as normal but add some drying retardant that way if you screw up on the precision you can wipe it off with a damp Q-tip before it sets....and my last tip.....use a very gentle pressure ....somewhere around the very tip of the brush bends a little when applying ...if the whole brush head bends then it's much to much pressure and it will result in less precision...

now now after those tips .....I might as well be a slice of fried gold.:). People tell me I know how to teach and relay info....I consider myself one who knows quite a bit from making SO MANY MISTAKES over SO MANY YEARS.:)

@BAM - I did varnish the eyes so hopefully that'll help with clean up if necessary. I don't have the steadiest hand (not bad, only mildly wobbly) so I'll definitely practice that "choking up" grip you mentioned. I bow to your and meaty_nosebleeds' good eyes for detail and I'll give it a try during my next painting session.

With regards to making mistakes: in a practical hands-on hobby like ours (and I've found this with sculpting as well) eventually you've got to stop reading articles and watching YouTube videos and get a brush in your hand. The only way to learn is to try and to practice. Something might not work, but then you get to figure out a way to fix it which often leads to something new and exciting. I maintain that the difference between us novices and people such as you, Bailey, ten ball and even Sproket is that the number of models you've painted gives you better brush control and knowledge of your paints. So you likely make fewer big mistakes than we do, but when/if you do you have the knowledge and experience to correct them. So keep the advice coming! It comes from a place of hard work and experience.

It's also why I don't strip my minis. They all represent something I've learned. Even if I set one aside because I can't achieve a look I'm going for, I know that I can come back when I've painted more and try again.

I'm going to be using Aradicus and Pickles as "guinea pigs" for various techniques and ideas I have. And I'm looking forward to painting a bright cartoonish style because I love colour. I'll still be aiming towards some level of realism with regards to shading and highlight placement. But it doesn't have to be exact because they're fun little chibis that existed in my head before I made them. There is no right way to bring them to life.

I agree with your post, practice makes perfect as they say, recently I've been trying to not let my fear of screwing up stop me from trying anyway, in the past I would get to a point and think, this looks OK,it could look better but I don't want to screw it up and have to start over, and the mini ends up looking average. Also I've started taking away safety nets, for example on red riding hoods base ripping out that log has left an awful scar across it, but it means I have to make the next idea work, I can't attempt something while having the log to fall back on, it might seem crazy but I'm finding its working and pushing me to make better things :)

I'm liking your sculpture, I'm tempted to try something myself as it seems to be all the rage these days lol I look forward to seeing how those inks look too, I want to invest in some inks but am clueless about which brand to get

@BaM I too learn best by screwing it up for myself and having to learn how to fix it, I've read countless articles and watched videos, but nothing works as good as making a mess of things and having to deal with it

HOLY SHIOLI do you both know as I was painting this morning at 5:00am literally I woke up to paint...and as I'm painting I was thinking of an article to write and as I'm doing my thing I see myself adding water as I go,cause things I do are never exact ratios ,but as I'm going again 2seconds later i see me changining my push angle to blend on the spot and then back to black lining etc etc,.,.my point is I'm doing these subtle changes very quickly and as comfortable as you and I breathe...and it was then I said to myself all the articles I write, have written etc etc can never have been close to the time and practice I've dedicated to this craft and I thought to myself since we're lil tots....human beings "LEARN BY DOING" we crawl...then what happens no one teaches us ..but we try and stand....and we fall...and we try it again only this time a lil more in tuned with our muscles that stabilize...and after a few more secs we fall....but then we do it again and with much more control ,confidence, and precision....BUT WAIT it doesn't end there as tots....as we mature into fine hunks of a man like myself..:/ lol ,after we mature and all through that we learn but not cause someone teaches us...but because we as humans....class?.. You guessed it -"learn by doing".

Damnit I've spent 32 years avoiding maturity! Lol

But yea, articles and videos are great to point you in the right direction, but the only time you start truly learning is by doing it yourself, that said I'd still be interested in reading your articles :p

@BAM - See, I sometimes know what I'm talking about. :p All of this is not an excuse for you to stop popping past and giving your opinion/suggestions though young man!

@Sicks - The work you're putting in is paying off. I'm glad it's working for you. I'm also pleased you like my little dabbles at sculpture. It's a lot of fun. :)

So it turns out that hands and feet are hard to sculpt. Especially when I have warm hands and the clay keeps getting too soft! But we persevere!

Yep - if you ever figure out how to do hands and feet well, I'll pay cash money for the secret!

your Chibi is looking great with paint on. Love the eyes so far. :)

You got it....I further support that the practical equation for any success including mini paint is ..PRACTICE + education and information = success...I do stand fully behind this as I vex painted hundreds of models before coming on cmon 3 years ago ,but it was only the last 2 years that research and testing the info I gathered on cmons forums is really what skyrocketed my skill set.so in short I stand behind paint a lot but paint a lot to test what you've learned...now go and paint something and get some photos up in this piece...;)

@bgcdazzler - It's a deal! *runs off to do research*

@Teronus - Good advice. I hope you remember it next time you get frustrated.

@BAM - Yes sir! Although I am working on solving a sculpting problem at the moment.

It was meant in good faith Tero. I do think it's good advice that we should *all* bear in mind.

Apologies if the tone came across as anything insulting.

I think adding smiley faces at the end of posts might eliminate any confusion on comments, it's a common problem when texting and not being able to see a persons face / humour. :)
