Thanks, Krule. Yeah, I'm thinking I need to fade the red or do something to it. It's not quite fitting with the rest of the flag yet.

really nice, I love the subtle white pattern and think it is a must after seeing it now. the red cross just needs some browns and some fading. The Roman is tops my man, that skin is fantastic. I see progress in your painting that is very good.

Whoa!

The banner looks incredible. Really eye grabbing. The pattern is really really good in my eyes. The pattern is fine enough that it really accentuates the shading that is there. The red needs more work, as you mentioned, I feel like it is too saturated and the edges aren't clean enough. IMHO

The Legionnaire need some hair on his legs, but the expression is great... uh, why is he looking at me like that? lol!

Thanks, Khonner, Milosh, and Demi. I'm glad everyone is liking the banner. I'll post some updated pics once I fix the red.

Hmmm... leg hair would be good, I just have no idea how to paint it. And don't worry, he's not looking at you. He's checking out a chick. :smile-big:

Super work mate , really impressive. I will 'borrow' the banner background :)
I think the red cross needs something but I dont know what? Maybe a slight dark red out line on the one side (Like a drop shadow) to give it some depth?

Thanks everyone. Skel, I keep playing around with my skin mixes. I've given a few in this thread, but they keep changing. Here's what I used for this guy. I'm using Reaper Master Series for the skin tones. My darkest shadows are Chestnut Brown mixed with my base, my base is about a 2-1 mix of rosy shadow and bronzed shadow, and my highlight is tanned highlight (which is lighter than it looks below, the model above shows the real shade). On just a few spots on the face I also used a touch of fair highlight (nose, top of the cheeks). And of course plenty of intermediate mixes between the shadows, base, and highlights.

Seems like I've been jumping from project to project lately. With two that are going to take a while (the mounted knight and the set of Romans) I really wanted to paint something that I could finish relatively quickly. So I grabbed this 54mm Sicilian Hoplite from Romeo Models. He's a figure I should be able to wrap up in two weekends of painting. Plus I've been feeling better about my metallics so I thought I'd give him a go.

I've been wanting to put together another tutorial, so I think I might use this figure as the subject. Sort of a painting start to finish sort of thing. I've been taking a lot of work in progress photos. Think that would be a useful thing to do or is there another topic people would like to see?

On a side note, the sculpt is based on a vase painting from Sicily. You can see all the armor details come from the figure on the left. The scene is of Achilles and Penthesilea... so I guess I could say the figure is Achilles instead of just some random hoplite.

I think any SBS from you would be great! Having done a few myself I would say:You are the one doing all the work, you decide the content - seems fair no?

Thanks, Zab and Khonner. It's metallic paints. I've been trying to improve on my true metals (haven't made the leap to NMM), but the general idea is to treat them like NMM with lots of contrast between shadow and highlight. The basic process was to start with a base coat of black brown. From there I covered most of it up with a mix of black and old bronze (Reaper paints). I used a lot of matte black in the mix to darken the color and dull the shine. I then applied successive layers with less and less black in the mix. After that I started to mix in some Vallejo Model Air gold. It's a bit of a weird shade on it's own, but it's great for highlighting. I went to maybe 50/50 bronze and gold, then used pure gold to pick out the armor details and hit some of the other edges. After all that was finished I used some washes (black, green, and blues) to deepen some of the shadows. The colors are subtle but hopefully they add a little bit of visual interest.

Got to admit Bailey that larger scale figures do benefit from well worked TMM.
This Bronze does have a 'glow' to it which is making the figure look more 'natural' and well suited for competition.

Thanks, Dragonsreach, Krule, and 10ball. Yup, he'll definitely be getting some weathering with pigments before he's finished.
