Bailey, dude... I was flabberghasted by that dwarf's glass eye and then that japanese warrior came along. What can I say... if I contemplate on what you did there my brain melts.

Thanks guys! Well, no painting for the next few days (off to a friend's wedding and then a quick stop back home to see my parents and extended family), so I thought I'd post one more update on the samurai. As I mentioned on the last page, I planned to use this design for his sleeve:
pattern_ex.jpg

Because of the guys pose and all the folds, it's not all that easy to see what the pattern really is supposed to look like. I spent some time analyzing this image and another one I found of the same guy, and came up with this as the main design.
S16.jpg

Now I've just got the not so simple task of transferring it to the figure. By the way, what you see above will be rotated 45 degrees on the figure. So I began with the main diagonal lines above and lightly painted on horizontal lines down the arm. I got a rough idea of the spacing I wanted and created a guide to keep it consistent. I then painted white dots (halfway between the horizontal lines) at where I thought the center of the circles should be. Again, I used the same measuring guide to space them. Because of the folds in the sleeve, I adjusted the spacing as I saw fit. Then I started to paint in the main vertical lines (other half of the diagonals above). These got a bit titled do to the movement and stretching of the cloth. Finally I put in the diagonal lines between the dots (horizontal and vertical in the image above). I still need to add in another two lines between each of the diagonals and fill out the rest of the circles, but this is a good point to stop and evaluate the design and spacing. You can see I've already made some adjustments (notice the double white dots in places). I will continue to turn the figure and view the pattern from different angles to check it and make adjustments where needed. Once I'm happy with it, I'll fill in the remaining lines, draw the circles to scale, and start shading/highlighting all of the design.

That's as far as I was able to get last night. I'm hopeful I'll be able to finish it (or at least get really close) next week. I've got the place to myself for a few days, so I should be able to get a lot of painting done after work.

If you keep putting these awesome mini tutorials together, I will start believing I can do freehand and will try it. :excruciating:

Ha, well in my opinion, if you have enough brush control to stay inside the lines (paint one section without utterly messing up the neighboring ones), then you can do freehand. That's just about everyone on this site. And, if you've done eyes, then you've already done freehand work. Those pupils weren't sculpted on, were they? Just start small and work your way up to more complex designs, that's what I did. I started out with maybe a stripe here or a really simple image like arrows on space marine shoulder pads. It's more about convincing yourself to add a little extra detail here or there on a figure. Once you get comfortable with that, then you can start tackling more and more complicated freehand work.

On an unrelated note, they just posted the seminar topics for Adepticon 2016. There are some really good ones, for example Angel Giraldez is doing some very small group (~6 people) airbrushing classes (they're hands on with an airbrush for each student to use). There are a lot more including two sections of my painting realistic faces. Check out the thread below for more info and a link to the full list on the Adepticon site.

You can't sign up for anything until November, for now you can just check out the topics, instructors, and the schedule.

I see Kirill and Ben will both be there again, is it another race for 3rd place this year? lol

Definitely interested in Kirill's Geiger freehand class. It will help me with that Harlequin Skyweaver I was trying to do.

Yeach true that I'm coming with about 8 entries and will be fighting for third too in every one of them lol.that's going to be an amazing piece.I think the big. Ages are the worried ones baily.

Ha, very true. Maybe it's too far out to call, but my money is on Ben this year to take home the top prize.

BAM, I'd say your vikings stand a very good shot for gold in historical unit. And I don't think that's the only piece which will be taking home a trophy.

I'm hopeful the samurai can get a top three finish in the large scale category... but there will be a lot of great painters competing, so who knows. Being completely honest, if I can complete the rest this figure to the same level as the chest and face, I'll be happy regardless of how it does at the show. If I'm able to get people to stop and take notice of a historical figure at a show dominated by fantasy and sci-fi, well, then that's just a bonus. Oh, and I'd like another shot at the Pegaso special award assuming they do it again.

Thank you again for patiently explaining your pattern "process" Bailey. This makes it look like a little bit more "affordable" ^^

Splendid work so far. The colour choices are working out beautifully. You're gonna give Kiril and komets sleepless nights of worry.

Thanks, Canny, Maenas, and Andy. I'm not sure they'll be that worried! But perhaps I can at least make them sweat a little.

I didn't have time to paint this weekend, so just a tiny update. Since this is a more complex pattern, I decided to switch up my approach a bit. I started by sketching on the main lines and a few guide dots (first image). It's enough that I can get a sense of how it's looking and if the spacing is alright. So I decided to switch over to the shading and finer level touches. I began by drawing in the main circles and then filling them in, shading, and highlighting. I've just done a few so far and those still need some tweaking so the shading matches up with the green. I'm going to do the rest of the circles and then turn to the lines, shade and highlight those too. Once that is done, I'll go back and add in the remaining lines (lots left, just check the reference photo above!) and the designs in the circles.

So why not just do all the lines at once? Well, it's getting a bit complicated and I don't want to be overwhelmed by the details. This seems like a good point to stop and get everything I've done so far to a more finished state before moving on. Probably not the most efficient approach (I'm sure I'll end up redoing some sections), but I can live with that.

Bailey, I've said it before, but it bears repeating - it is an absolute pleasure and an honour to get the chance to see how someone of your talent works.

One day I hope to be able to inspire other people. Until then I'll happily be in awe of you.

Thanks, ArchArad. I don't claim to do things the 'right' way, but I figure if I share my thought process then you all can decide whether or not there's something there worth trying! And I should add, I've seen some definite improvement in your work over the short time you've been active on CMON. Keep at it and you'll get there. Doesn't matter how complicated the piece, everything I'm doing here comes down to the basics of lighting (placing shadows and highlights in believable places), contrast, blending (goes hand in hand with contrast and is probably the part that requires the most practice), and color (I'm still struggling with this one... not that I've mastered any of those mind you, but I've picked up a lot from the great talent on this site).

And you're more than welcome to check out some of my earlier work. Here's what I was doing 5 years ago

I can say with complete confidence that your Nurgle Chaos Lord is way better than either of those two POS figures.

On an unrelated note, I just saw this new project from Castle Miniatures. They're launching two 75mm viking style figures through indiegogo. But either of these guys could work in a fantasy setting as well as historical. I thought this might interest some of you. BAM, I could see you really enjoying these.

I appreciate your confidence in me Bailey. :) And I think you've hit on a couple of very important points: 1) It's often less intimidating to break a big project down into the basics, and 2) Each of us has to paint or own way that suits our style, so be inspired just know that you may not be able to do exactly the same work.

Those figures are very nice sculpts with great character. :good:

Wow, what an amazing job on the Samurai. I have always done all the base coats first before adding any details. I will have to try your approach of completing one section at a time.

Thanks, everyone. BAM, I had a feeling you'd like those figures. Too bad they're 75mm and not 54mm. They'll still be a great project, but they're too big to fit into your current viking unit.

You know, my favorite project tends to be whatever the newest piece I'm working on is. But this samurai might hold that title for a while after I've finished him. If it keeps going like this, it's going to be a tough one to top. But don't worry, I've got some ideas. For example, the Black Sailors project is about to ship and I have a feeling that Big Bomba piece is going to be pretty epic! =)

MrJim, I've done both ways for the designs. I tend to do the full highlighting and shading on the background first, but there are times when I'll just sketch in the design on top of the base coat. For example, I did that with the major features on the hockey goalie (big numbers, main logo) and on figures where I do a checkerboard design. Here there are a lot of thin lines, so it's just easier for me to do the whole background first and then do the lines.
